2019 Was A Very Good Year!

Island Life

Island Life

It was another good year for the Pearl Foundation, so thanks to everyone who bought merchandise, attended shows, held a Living Room Concert, visited our re-opened eBay Store, or just plain donated a buck or two in thanks for the free downloads! I’ll be publishing a final report on my Facebook page and the forum, but as of this moment we are adding $75,000 to our scholarship endowments, bringing the grand total up to $1,191,250.00 – a whole lot more than Michael Camp (who wrote the code for our first Internet auction), my wife (who made out 300+ shipping labels), and myself (who had the brilliant idea to take up months of our time raising funds back in 1998) ever dreamed we could raise.

I was trying to figure out why I felt tired the other day, and Pat said “You had quite a year, didn’t you?” Looking over these photos, I realized she’s right! Some new songs, shows with Livingston Taylor, trying to fix The Big Bang Theory elevator, visiting Miriam Therese Winter, LRC’s and Pearl lunches all over the country, spending time with Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner, old friend and colleague Brooks Arthur, attending the Woodstock Film Festival, and doing an interview there with new friend Doreen Ringer-Ross, and down-sizing from our 1910 4,200 sq. ft. house to an 1,100 sq. ft. home on an island in the Southeast kept me pretty occupied!

What else... I got banned from Facebook for the fifth and sixth times (no, I don’t know why, and yes, it counts as twice because the three day ban turned into six for some mysterious reason). I continue to strive toward civility on my page, posting “Conversations With My Wife” now and then to remind people that yes, there is a world out there beyond politics. I started cooking again, though getting used to an electric stove is really tricky. And as much as I hate to say it, my own mortality began staring me in the face as I realized my parents had been gone almost two decades now. I still love performing, and I love recording with other people, but I’ve seriously ramped down my own touring in favor of staying home and doing more writing. After all, that’s where it all begins, and when a song like “Resist” is finally finished and ready to be heard, it’s worth every hour I put into it. Thinking of other artists covering my work still brings me great joy, and then there are haiku, and a collection of articles and short stories... well, the list goes on and on.

I’ll be spending most of the summer at Swannanoa Gathering, giving master classes during each of the five weeks, then doing some more touring to break in new songs. We haven’t posted fall tour dates yet, and there won’t be many, but it’s looking like Vancouver will finally be on the list. Stay tuned or join the RSS feed for updates on that.

Thanks for tuning in! Hopefully the coming year will bring joy and peace to everyone reading this, and to those you love. For myself, I plan to “keep on keeping on”, as the saying goes.

All the best,

Janis

For the first time, Janis will be giving her 5-day series "A Master Class In Artistry" during each of the Swannanoa Gathering weeks. The final week will also feature a second, more interactive class tentatively titled "War Stories". Time of classes is TBA; please check the  website for more information. The 5 day class covers everything from the origins of artists to physicalization, songwriting for profit and not so much, performance, the need to be brave, how to survive as an artist in the modern world, and why bother. Points are illustrated with songs and playing as she takes us on a journey that begins with the first caveman to tell a story and continues through the myth of the artist as "crazy", the need for silence, and why she believes "art saves". Drawing on her 55 years of experience in the entertainment industry and her ten years with Stella Adler, presented with humor and grace, brutally honest, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her students.

Janis returns to The Kate a scant year later, at their insistence. She's sure it's too soon, they're sure it's not. She's writing furiously so she can present some new material, and looking forward to visiting one of her all-time favorite venues again! Expect some good, relaxed fun, some tears, an after-show appearance for signing things you've brought and things you may purchase at the "merch table"!!

Janis has been hearing about Shalin Liu from friends for more than a decade, and it's taken this long to coordinate schedules so she could do two nights in this prestigious venue. Expect old songs, new songs, stories, and time afterward for hellos and signing whatever you bring or buy! Since she'll be there for two nights, things should get a bit more relaxed than usual - maybe an extra step out guitar solo, or an audience Q&A. Who knows?! We can promise that this ten-time-Grammy-nominee will put on a great show, with plenty of heart and soul. 8 pm show
