Annual Sale, Featuring Personalized Cards!

February 28, 1976 - accepting my first Grammy

Woodstock Film Festival group

As I was sitting around explaining to my wife that I hadn't gotten a thing done this year, that I'm the laziest person on earth, and that essentially it's useless to try accomplishing anything because it's all for naught, she reminded me to look in my datebook... To my astonishment, I discovered that I'd travelled enough to qualify for platinum status on several airlines! Among other things:

Miriam Therese Winter spent her annual Week-After-Christmas with us (she spends Christmas week with the Medical Mission Sisters in Philadelphia, wrapping and distributing gifts). I did a number of events for libraries around the country, including one in Holmes Beach FL that was streamed live on line.

On tour with Livingston Taylor

On tour with Livingston Taylor

I did about 15 shows, many with Livingston Taylor, a bunch of master classes, visited my friends on set at The Big Bang Theory, had lunch with Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner (what a thrill!), attended the Woodstock Film Festival where I got to do a live interview with BMI's Doreen Ringer-Ross and meet a lot of wonderful directors and writers, did Living Room Concerts in San Diego and Bainbridge Island, shot footage for an upcoming PBS special about the role of music in the women's movement, did a number of interviews and declined even more, and last but not least, wrote several new songs I'm very pleased with. (And if you know me, you know that's a tall order!) I also committed to spending all five weeks of the Swannanoa Gathering giving master classes next summer, and at least two more Living Room Concerts are already booked!

Gracie Mae hangs onto her stuffy

Gracie Mae hangs onto her stuffy

Between all of that, we packed up our Nashville home of 30 years and moved to an island off the coast of Florida, downsizing from 4,600 square feet to 1,100. No mean feat, especially when Gracie Mae insisted on keeping every single stuffy!!!

In celebration of such an amazing year, Pat and I decided to hold a website sale, running from now until Monday, December 23 at 11:00 am EST.

Last sale, when we offered personalized cards (now 30% off!), I got dozens of frantic last-minute emails from people wanting Christmas, New Year's, Easter, Passover, birthday cards for relatives, friends, and even animals. (I did kind of enjoy writing to a pet rabbit, though I had to ask for more information than "Very cute, long ears, likes lettuce".) This time, please place your order early, and if you're worried, choose Priority Mail for shipping. We'll do our best to get shipments out quickly, but it's all being done by the two of us, so keep that in mind!

If you order a card please remember to include as much information about the recipient as possible – and don't forget to check out discounted prices on almost everything else, from CD's and audio books (make sure you check out Singer & the Song,, where I had to figure out how to sing 20 songs originally written for choirs!), sheet music, Roadie-For-A-Day, and the Pearl Lunch.

I'll be touring some in 2020 because I want to start working in these new songs, so tune in after December 5th for an updated tour schedule. If I'm near your town, think about being a Roadie or having a meal with us, and remember – all that money goes to the Pearl Foundation! This year I expect we'll hit somewhere around $1,175,000.00 in scholarship endowments (though if our Nashville house sells, it will be even higher, so if you know someone who wants a 1910 house on a near-acre close to town, feel free to contact Judy).

As always, we are in need of haiku! Go here for more information, contributions much appreciated.

Meanwhile, best wishes for the New Year, and hope to see many of you during my after-show hellos!

The final week will also feature a second, more interactive class tentatively titled "War Stories". Time of classes is TBA; please check the  website for more information. The 5 day class covers everything from the origins of artists to physicalization, songwriting for profit and not so much, performance, the need to be brave, how to survive as an artist in the modern world, and why bother. Points are illustrated with songs and playing as she takes us on a journey that begins with the first caveman to tell a story and continues through the myth of the artist as "crazy", the need for silence, and why she believes "art saves". Drawing on her 55 years of experience in the entertainment industry and her ten years with Stella Adler, presented with humor and grace, brutally honest, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her students.

Janis returns to The Kate a scant year later, at their insistence. She's sure it's too soon, they're sure it's not. She's writing furiously so she can present some new material, and looking forward to visiting one of her all-time favorite venues again! Expect some good, relaxed fun, some tears, an after-show appearance for signing things you've brought and things you may purchase at the "merch table"!!

Janis has been hearing about Shalin Liu from friends for more than a decade, and it's taken this long to coordinate schedules so she could do two nights in this prestigious venue. Expect old songs, new songs, stories, and time afterward for hellos and signing whatever you bring or buy! Since she'll be there for two nights, things should get a bit more relaxed than usual - maybe an extra step out guitar solo, or an audience Q&A. Who knows?! We can promise that this ten-time-Grammy-nominee will put on a great show, with plenty of heart and soul. 8 pm show
