The Basics: Like Unreleased 1: Mary's Eyes, this CD is a compilation of worktapes, demos, and live recordings made from 1972 right up to last year. The first CD in this series was so successful that we decided to do a follow-up! Each song in the Unreleased series has extensive liner notes discussing how and/or why it was written, with tidbits about the musicians & co-writers.

Inside Scoop: When it came time to choose the songs, Janis did what she'd done for the first one - made a list of everything she wasn't embarrassed by, then picked her favorites.

Janis says, "A lot of these songs are things I thought should have been cut by someone else by now, but for some reason never were. The final song, 'Take No Prisoners,' was originally recorded on Revenge with an amazing band that included Steve Gadd, Willie Weeks, and Matt Rollins. The first time I did a show solo, years later, I automatically put this song in as the closer. When I reached the instrumental, I suddenly discovered I was all alone on stage - no drummer to start the solo, no bass player to continue it, no lead guitarist to bring me back to the vocal part. I panicked, and just started playing the first thing that came into my head. It felt very much like falling off a cliff, wondering if you'll break every bone in your body! Since that time, I've become much more confident as a guitarist, and Philip Clark and I now look forward to the guitar solo as a chance for us to truly work as a team, with Philip handling most of the guitar effects and playing off my ideas."

Lyrics

Arms Around My Life

Janis Ian

All those broken promises
All those shattered dreams
All this ache and loneliness
that hides inside of me
I've been waiting for so long
I've forgotten what it's like
to feel somebody's arms around my life

All this longing
All this yearning
All this hopeless
twisting and turning
I've been lonely for so long
I've forgotten what it's like
to feel somebody's arms around my life

I know you're out there, somewhere
underneath the stars
And when you finally find me
I'll know who you are
Star light, star bright
Haven't I the right
to feel somebody's arms around my life

All the broken promises
All the shattered dreams
All this aching loneliness
Will finally be set free
I have waited for so long
to remember what it's like
to feel somebody's arms around my life

Black Crow Flying

Janis Ian

When you go down on a Monday,
Tuesday never comes
Nobody likes a hero when they don't know how to run
And if you drown on a Sunday,
the sermon's never done
Nobody likes a user when he's eating up the sun

I've been away down Dixie
in my old Kentucky home
Nobody likes a loser when he offers you the bone
I wanna stay down slowly,
sexy Dixie women moan
Nobody loves a user when he don't bring his own

I am a black sheep crying
at the sight of the face of the sun
Nobody likes a user when he offers just the crumbs
I am black crow flying,
dying on the run
Nobody loves a user when they don't get none

Here In The City

Philip Clark

You don't see many shadows here in the city
Only picturesque windows, all covered and dirty
Black and grey that once was new
Yesterday that once was you
No I can't find my shadow in the city

We got canyons of smoke and steel-blue horizons
Our castles explode as the city lays dying
History that once was new
Memories that once were true
No I can't find my shadow in the city

And oh, for the green green hills of home
For the hills I used to roam
so many years ago
Oh, for the love that's now grown cold
For the love that's now grown old
as the hills I used to know

You don't find many lovers here in the jungle
Only magazine covers designed for the humble
Cold caress that burns and slides
Emptiness that's hard to hide
Used to be I knew my mind
But I can't find my shadow in the city

And oh, for the green green hills of home
For the hills I used to roam
so many years ago
Oh, for the love that's now grown cold
For the love that's now grown old
as the hills I used to know

Still Waiting For Love

Janis Ian/Thom Schuyler

Have you ever heard a robin sing
all alone on the edge of spring?
Still waiting
Still waiting for love
Felt the beat of a silent heart,
scared to speak and be torn apart
Still waiting
Still waiting for love

And every day,
I try to say -- Hold on
'cause I believe
there's got to be someone

Here I am in the winter frost
Keeping my fingers crossed
Still waiting
Still waiting for love

I'm waiting for someone
I'm waiting to see
Is somebody waiting for me?

Have you ever heard a robin sing
all alone on the edge of spring?
Still waiting
Still waiting for love
Felt the beat of a silent heart,
scared to speak and be torn apart
Still waiting
Still waiting for love
Still waiting
Still waiting for love
Still waiting
Still waiting for love

Childhood Hero

Janis Ian

I can't believe so much could go so wrong
It seems like every door is closed to me
I wake every morning resolved to be strong
I tell myself I keep good company

I can't believe that this is my life
There's always been someone to shelter me
Now I'm out there on the streets without a knife
being told I'm ancient history

The doors that close once opened wide
I try to take it all in stride
and hold my head up to the sky
But now they slam right in my face
with unseen hands that can't be traced
and leave a bruise that even you cannot erase

They say that art's become an industry
and that I've been away too long this time
They say I've taken too much liberty
Well what kind of punishment fits that crime?

They say success came much too fast
I never learned to suffer or to beg
Just look at the bruises I've amassed
I've paid my dues now - can we start again?

The doors that close once opened wide
I try to take it all in stride
and think of better times gone by
But I've heard everyone's excuse
It's no longer any use

I might have been your childhood hero
I might have been your native son
but I was grounded close to zero
Now that rocket ride is done

And if I never reach Orion
And if I never fly that far
Still, there's no harm in trying
to go walking on a star

Everything Was Beautiful

Janis Ian

Did you hear the swallow?
He was calling out your name
He was saying that the winter's almost over

Fortune's on the wing
and now that spring is here
you will be leaving

Paint the sky in blue
and the colors that are you
softly fade away

It's a dim horizon
My eyes are getting old

I'll see you in the winter
when it's cold

The weather's always changing here
Without the seasons
life would be so bare

Did you hear the swallow
He was telling you
it's time to go

Everything was beautiful
Nothing hurt
It didn't even rain

They tell me people sometimes forget
what it's like to be alone
but i know that I'll remember
when you're gone

Solitaire

Janis Ian

You play your solitaire in solitary rooms
Time out from Eliot to rest your head
"Did Robert Frost mean suicide?" you ask a friend
and wash your hair before you go to bed

Reading Nietzsche in the dark
Superman without the spark
Lonely heart

You count your friends as many
though they number two
You throw small parties
attended by few
and spend the evening
criticizing all you do
As if your being honest meant your being true

Still it's better to wound a friend
Someone who'll understand
Someone who can defend
Lonely man

The window, shut, admits no perfume
Your bed is empty occupied by only you
who plays his solitaire in solitary rooms
Do you think the poets really wrote for you?

Death cannot enter through the window
and life is left behind
because there is no time
Lonely mind

The Old Man's Shoes

Janis Ian

People trying to mess with my security
Nobody knows what you really mean to me
I got angels to the right and to the left of me
Ain't gonna stagger home no more

It's apparent from the night that you've been dreaming too
You need a warrant for the right to be scheming like you do
There ought to be a law against falling for you
Who's gonna play surrender now

I said thank you a lot for your big mountain top
but it ain't gonna worry me no more
Do what you will if it gives you a thrill
Take what you can when you can can, my man
Take it on the lam, Sam
Don't look back, man
at the sand in the old man's shoes

Me and Roberta we're gonna get real clean
Put on our high heeled shoes and make the scene
Dance until the music and the lights turn green
Stay until the moon gets new

Roberta she looks just like a foreign movie star
She like for you to push, but don't push too far
Anyway where's the rush, why do you wanna be so hard
Who's gonna play pretender now

Chorus

As Far As Lonely Goes

Janis Ian/Matraca Berg

Underneath the neon sign
of harry's bar and grill
Someone hugs a bottle
to take away the chill
Oh, but the wind still blows
Carries his sleeping soul
as far as lonely goes

Upstairs in a penthouse
behind a golden door
Someone's drinking pink champagne
to keep from being bored
Between the highs and lows
the icy wind still blows
as far as lonely goes

You would never buy a bottle
to wash away your troubles
If you could buy a suitcase for your soul
You would make a pretty package
of all your extra baggage
Lock it up and send it down the road
as far as lonely goes

From the has-beens to the haves
From the mansions to the alleys
From the riches to the rags
Underneath our clothes
we're all the same, you know
as far as lonely goes

I would never buy a bottle
to wash away my troubles
if i could buy a suitcase for my soul
I would make a pretty package
of all my extra baggage
Lock it up and send it down the road
As far as lonely goes

You Don't Know My Heart

Janis Ian

We learn to stand in the shadows
Watch the way the wind blows
Thinking no one knows - we're one of a kind
Shy glances at the neighboring team
Romance is a dangerous dream
Never knowing if they'll laugh or scream
Living on a fault line
Will you won't you be mine?
Hoping it'll change in time

We can't hold hands
when there's sunlight in the park
We just hold hands after dark
And if people say we chose this way
to set ourselves apart
I say - you don't know my heart
You don't know my heart

Used to run, I used to hide
Heard a joke and let it slide
Easier to laugh than lie, waiting on discovery
Tried to fit, I tried to blend
We learn young to pretend
'cause if they knew, the world would end
Frightened of my family
Where is everyone like me?
When will I be free

We can't hold hands
when there's sunlight in the park
We just hold hands after dark
And if people say we chose this way
to set ourselves apart
I say - you don't know my heart
You don't know my heart

Everybody needs a love of their own
I'm no different than the rest
Everyone deserves a happy home
And that's what we do best
Why do they have to make it a test

We can't hold hands
when there's sunlight in the park
We just hold hands after dark
And if people say we chose this way
to set ourselves apart
I say - you don't know my heart
You don't know my heart

Georgia

Janis Ian

Georgia, do you know I want you
Isn't it enough to
wait the whole night through
Georgia, do you know I need you
Want to live and breath you
my whole life through

To do my heart some good
I wrote a song to say "I love you"
and I promise not to hurt you
or to ever make you blue
So hold me tight
Isn't it right that we're together
and to hang on to forever
the whole night through

Georgia, here's a love song
Have I done wrong
to say what's in my heart
Georgia, it's a new horizon
We can lift off, flying
and never be apart

To do my heart some good
I wrote a song to say "I love you"
and I promise not to hurt you
or to ever make you blue
So hold me tight
Isn't it right that we're together
and to hang on to forever
the whole night through

'cause I still dream
of your wings enfolding me
and when I fall
these four walls
continue holding me

Georgia, do you know I want you
Isn't it enough to
wait the whole night through
Georgia, do you know I need you
Want to live and breath you
my whole life through

You're Too Late

Janis Ian/Kye Fleming

You're too late for my love
You're too late, I can't wait up another night
You can kiss my love goodbye
You're too late, you're too late, you're too late

The clock on the wall keeps ticking
but you don't even try to call
If you think I sit at home
waiting by the phone
Honey, this one time you're wrong

You expect me to be patient
You expect me to be calm
There's a limit to my love
You've already used it up
and I'm already half-past gone

You're too late for my love
You're too late, I can't wait up another night
You can kiss my love goodbye
You're too late, you're too late, you're too late

There's no light shining in my window
There's no key up above my door
I know it's hard to believe
but there's been a change in me
and I don't miss you any more

You're too late for my love
You're too late, I can't wait up another night
You can kiss my love goodbye
You're too late, you're too late, you're too late

Hope you're out there somewhere
with somebody new who'll help you settle down
'cause baby if you're coming back to me
you'll only find I'm not around

You're too late for my love
You're too late, I can't wait up another night
You can kiss my love goodbye
You're too late, you're too late, you're too late

Marion Amidst The Roses

Janis Ian

When I am old and weary
who'll be there to sing?
When I am tired and bleary-eyed
who'll be there to bring me home?
I take a chill in the winter
and I spend my summers

In Normandy
We have always stayed the summer there
with Marion, who brings us tea and roses
and a memory of love no one supposes
Amidst the roses

Where are my knights and passions?
Nothing left to say
and now my life's spent, fashioned
out among the courtships and the grave
Between the flowers of mourning
and the chill of evening

In Normandy
It has always seemed like summer there
and Marion, who brings me tea and roses
in a memory of lust no one supposes
amidst the roses

Holes

Janis Ian/Jon Vezner

There are holes in my shoes
There are holes in my clothes
There's a hole in my heart
where you used to go - my heart
There's a hole in my lips
where you used to kiss me
A hole in the hole
and nobody fits me now - oh, now

And I could find somebody new
There's a lot of fish in the sea
but every time I see one next to you
I know this hole's where mMy soul wants to be

There's a hole in the wall
where my fist found your face
There's a hole in the soul
of the whole human race - your face
Holes in the flesh
Holes in the bone
Holes in this bed
where I now dance alone - our home

And I could find somebody new
There's a match for every flame
Any time I strike one next to you
I know that hole will never be the same

There's a crack in the world
where it holds up the sky
and it bleeds from the mouth
and it foams from the eye
There's a hole in this desert
my life has become
I am rock, I am stone
I am blind and deaf and dumb

There are holes in my shoes
Holes in my clothes
Holes in my heart
where you used to go - my heart

And I could find somebody new
and finally be set free
but every time I see someone with you
I know that hole's where my soul wants to be

Nightmare Mountain

Janis Ian

Wish you would have told me
what was wrong with you
Made mountains out of valleys
and took away the view
Wish you would have told me
Told me there and then
I never would have done it if I knew
it meant losing you

So many dreams forgotten
in the twinkling of an eye
Dreams of unborn children
used to glitter in our sky
Now there's only Nightmare Mountain,
grown too high to climb
Never would have done it if I'd known
that it meant losing home

There's lots of other chances
now that I've got lots of time
to search out these romances
that once occupied my mind

I wish you would have told me
before this mountain grew
I never would have built it if I knew
that it meant losing you
It meant losing you

Don't Rush The River

Janis Ian/Kye Fleming

I looked at the sky
and asked - Why is this valley
so deep and so wide,?
when I know love's waiting
just over that mountain
Why can't I fly?
and the wind replied

Don't rush the river
Let it run deep and slow
Don't rush the river
It goes where it needs to go
In love's sweet time,
you'll wake up and find
you've finally made it home
Don't rush the river
Just let it flow

I walked in the silence
and wondered why love
takes so long to find
Then I saw the beauty
that sprang up around me
It bathed my eyes,
and my heart sighed

Don't rush the river
Let it run deep and slow
Don't rush the river
It goes where it needs to go
In love's sweet time,
you'll wake up and find
you've finally made it home
Don't rush the river
Just let it flow

Take No Prisoners

Janis Ian

The writer wrote. The singer sung.
The record broke. The audience was stunned.
Some they begged for mercy, others even cried
Some fled, left for dead. Some said it changed their lives.
And the writer said I wish you'd known me
When I still believed in the truth
Now it's all I have left
along with my debts and lack of youth

He said -

Take no prisoners. Tell no lies.
No pretty songs of compromise.
Take no prisoners. Tell no lies....
It's a good day to die.

God spoke. The people laughed.
The tablets broke while they were pissing on the golden calf
Some they found their heaven, some they found their hell
Some they ran to Canaan land, some just lay where they fell
And God said I wish you'd known me
when I still believed you'd be true
Now for the rest of your days when you call out my name
I'll be MR. GOD to you

He said -

Take no prisoners. Tell no lies.
No petty songs of compromise.
Take no prisoners. Tell no lies....
It's a good day to die.

And the lover said Why don't you touch me?
Reach out your hand just like this
You can capture my soul - you can take hold
and kill me with a kiss.

She said -

Take no prisoners. Tell no lies.
No pretty songs of compromise.
Take no prisoners. Tell no lies.
It's a good day to die.
It's a good day to die.
It's a good day....
