Koji,
First welcome to the message board.... You ask to understand better about attitudes of the Amerian People.... To that I can only say (speaking only for myself) that like people of all faiths or nations not all agree on anything. As one American I find often that I am disgusted by what our Government does in the name of the people when I know in reality the concern of our government is not at all in my or many other Americans interest... Despite what the Government or media says.
I for one would welcome ANY immigrant that comes to this nation and takes the steps to demonstrate that they are here to (1) not induce harm to our nation or people, and (2) Is looking to better their own life through education or work.
I do feel that Immigrants should properly register, but by doing so those people should be offered opportunities to better their lifes.
As to being a persons religious background wether Christian, Jew, Buddist, Muslum or Druid... That does not matter to me in the least so long as they are not violent or destructive to others.
In closing if you want to understand the people of America, Just ask us... Don't take the word of the so called religious or political leaders that claim to speak for us...
That Said... Again Welcome to the board my friend... You will find many new friends here hiding in the corners...
Best wishes to you and yours..

I'd say Randy put it every well.
This board is about as diverse a group of folks (not all American by any means!) as you'll find anywhere. Stick around...you'll most likely enjoy it.
Muslim leaders and police took pains Sunday to distinguish between the religion of Islam and the 17 Muslim men and youth accused of plotting bomb attacks in Ontario.
Welcome, Koji.
Here in Canada, we are a multicultural society. Immigration has been going on for all of my lifetime, and before. There is a good mix of cultures living in my building and neighbourhood. Everyone seems to get along fine.
The media has been irresponsible in the case of the 17 young men arrested who were allegedly planning to do acts of terrorism here in Canada, focussing on the fact that they were Muslim instead of the fact that they were following the radical ideology inspired by al-Qaeda.
Like the news story says:
Canadian Muslims absolutely condemn an act of violence or threat of violence," Muhammad Alam, president of the Islamic Foundation of Toronto, told a joint news conference in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.
"This is not about religion or faith," but about political and social situations around the world, he said.
Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair agreed, saying the accused were motivated by an ideology based on politics and violence, not by faith. "This is not the action of the Muslim community."
Creating fear is the main goal of terrorists. When the media does the same through irresponsible reporting, one wonders what exactly defines terrorism.

There is so much truth in this that I just want to underline it.
The media in whole needs to "sell" and to do so they have gone more and more into focusing on the negative part of every news story they "tell" us about and/or put it in a catagory that we respond harsly to, so harsly that we buy the paper or watch the news in tv and the worst thing is we believe almost all of what we are being "fed" by the newsmedia.
For exsample: News here in Iceland about Africa, was and is, all about hunger, corruption and diseas, so this is what I expected when I went there. What I was not prepered for was that everybody, friends and family, asked me not to go because I would surely be eaten by cannibals or get a diseas that would kill me etc. Even the doctor who gave me the shots that I needed warned me to go "there"??????
In Africa I went all the way into the deepest jungle and in one place was told that this is where the first case of ebola virus was thought to be found. Sure there was poverty, sure there where problems of everykind......but mostly there where all kinds of beautyful and smiling people ready to help and make my stay there as comfortable as could be.
I asked in one village why the kids ran away when they saw me and was told it was because they had never seen a white man before and "someone" had told them that the "WHITE MAN WAS A CANNIBAL THAT EATS LITTLE CHILDREN THAT ARE NAUGHTY"??????
I agree life can be both cruel and wonderful, there are good people and there are cruel people. In my life I have decided not to believe everything that I am told or what I read, when I greet someone I neither judge him nor do I let other judgement´s of him affect my own decision about him/her. I immediately begin to find the good thing in him/her and emphasize on that.
Call me simple but the only person I can change in my life is me....and I want me to like me.
Welcome again to this board koji utomi, it is a nice board full of wonderful people and a great host.
BELIEVE HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE, AND NONE OF WHAT YOU READ.
"... the only person I can change in my life is me....and I want me to like me."
If that makes you simple Gisli, then so am I, but I'd rather be the genuine me than a plastic* anyone else.
* Plastic people is a phrase borrowed from Ursula, a German lady friend of mine.
