Two face life for gay barman murder in London

Friday June 16, 12:05 AM

LONDON (Reuters) - Two men face life imprisonment on Friday when they are sentenced for the murder of a gay barman in a homophobic attack last year.

Thomas Pickford, 25, unemployed, and 33-year-old decorator Scott Walker pleaded guilty in May to murdering Jody Dobrowski as he walked home through a London park.

Pickford and Walker, who had previously denied murder, are due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey.

Dobrowski, a 24-year-old assistant manager at Jongleurs in Camden, north London, was punched and kicked to death as he walked home across Clapham Common on October 14 after an evening out with friends.

He was discovered unconscious and later died in hospital.

During the men's trial, prosecutor Crispin Aylett said the minimum term they should serve for the "appalling" attack should be 30 years behind bars.

The court heard that during the assault, the killers stuffed Dobrowski's shoe into his mouth and passers-by reportedly heard them screaming gay insults as they beat him to death.

He died from head, neck and facial injuries which were so serious that his family did not recognise him and he could only be identified from fingerprints.

Aylett told the court: "These two men were involved in a premeditated plan to attack a gay man."

My heart really sinks whenever I read something like this. It's so scary to think that this can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone...but you have to live your life. You can't live in fear. Yet it reminds me of Janis's words: "I'm afraid to shine too bright/ since the day they took his life..." "Matthew" really is our "Strange Fruit," and gay bashers are our lynch mobs.

I'd just like to update this stort by telling you these two "men" were both senteced to life imprisonment, with a minimum stay of 28 years before parole will be considered.

Okay, I may get slammed for stereotyping here, but one of these numbskulls was an *ahem* decorator. I can't help wondering what the whole story was. Perhaps a bit of self-loathing in there somewhere?

Whatever it was, this sort of thing is barbaric. As the human race evolves, seems like some just don't keep up.

It was an awful thing to happen and more common than people realise. It is surprising, even here in Manchester how many of my gay friends have been the victims of homophobic abuse, bullying and worse. I have been attacked, Roger was stabbed a few years ago and the police seem almost powerless.

Hopefully the fact that this judge has done right may be a deterrent for anyone who wants to do this kind of despicable activity in the future.
