Here's a quick synopsis of what has been going on with my mother the last 2 days:
Tuesday 06/13
8:28 a.m.
Mother was extubated, and all mechanical life support turned off and replaced with a non-rebreather mask at 15 liter per min. Oxygen levels at this time are at 95%, breathing is laboured, but, she is hanging on.
9:00 a.m.
Doctor leaves, not expecting her to be there later
As the day progressed, her breathing became more laboured at times and she seemed to be getting very tired. She is given morphine throughout the day for comfort measures, along with regular meds and nutrients thru her feeding tube. No significant changes occur throughout the day
8:30 p.m.
Doctor returns, seems a bit surprised.
Doctor: "She's really a strong lady."
He then leaves, saying that all we can do is wait.
06/14
12:30 a.m.
A fever has developed and mother is given Tylenol along with regular meds. Fever decreases withing a few hours and no other changes are noted during the night.
8:30 a.m.
Doctor returns.
Doctor: "Wow......"
He doesn't really seem to know what else to say....but, is truly surprised. It has now been 24 hrs.
2:00 p.m.
Oxygen levels are beginning to drop now, staying around 82/83 %, indicating that she is finally starting to wear out.
9.30 p.m.
Oxygen levels remain at 82% and I leave to come home and shower. My 11 year old granddaughter, Tiffani has been with me the whole time and plans to return with me tonight. What a dedicated child she is!
Thanks everyone for your support and kind words. I know it probably won't be long now, but Rudie Power has enabled us to have just a bit more time together. I'm off to return to the hospital shortly, will update next time I am home
Love to you all,
Lexa
