My high school band director was a terrific teacher, great motivator, champion of teens, and just a terrific man. He retired a couple of years after I graduated, then moved to Florida with his wife where they bought a 10-unit motel on Daytona Beach. He died in the mid-90's when I was living in Illinois. His only son is a year older than I, and he narrates most of this video. Most of the footage is from the 50s and early 60s. I saw this for the first time yesterday, and it reduced me to tears. I don't know if it will interest anyone else, but take a look if you want.

This is the man who tried to talk me out of going into music education. "It's a lot of work for not very much money." (He thought I should have gone into theater) He gave me one of my favorite quotes: "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, then take what comes."

We all loved him. William D. Kleyla

Thank you for that, Karen, it was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful teacher.
Watching that made me think back to my highschool music teacher, now passed.... Mr. Wheeler. He made my time in band, chorus, and music theory classes so enjoyable to learn. I miss him, as I'm sure you miss Mr. Kleyla.

RIP.

Music teachers are such special people...what a wonderful tribute that was to their father and grandfather who was such a beautiful influence on their lives...and everyone else's whom he touched and taught. Thanks Karen! I'm glad you had the chance to know him and work under his tutelege, Lucky lady!

Great tribute Karen!

You may actually recognize the names of my favorite choral teachers:

Walter Ehret was my teacher in Scarsdale and then Stephen Gunzenhauser, once we moved into the city. I keep thinking I should head down to Lancaster and reacquaint myself with the latter. They certainly were among my all time favorite teachers and among the best I had, mostly for their incredible passion for what they were doing and both clearly ate, slept and dreamed music! :)
