I've recently introduced my boyfriend to Janis's music. He's in love and especially likes "She's Made Of Porcelain". He's a much better guitar player than me and wants to learn the song. Most of her 60's music would make for obscure choices but I guess this one in particular does so it's a long shot. I have the verve collection and listen to it a lot. We also like "Snowbird" and Ben does this great comical TV voice intro over the beginning! I guess you have to be there... Any one who has chords or any ideas for "She's Made Of Porcelain" we'd love to hear about it.

Don't have any info on the song, but I do have a particular love for it. Sad and uplifting at the same time. Love Janis's multiple vocal overdubbing at the end. Gorgeous piece of music, and the lyrics are cryptic but very evocative. There have been times when I've just listened to it over and over.

Where can I find this song? I've looked at the Lyrics on this website, but could not find it. You've made me curious !
Jan from Holland.
Me too, Jan ...thanks for asking. I've never heard this song and am getting curiouser and curiouser.:D

It's on "The Secret Life Of J. Eddy Fink" as well as the Verve Collection (and presumably available for download. A wonderful song, one of many that shows how much Janis was (and is) wise beyond her years.
Astonished that The Amazing Brogan has not weighed in on this. Mind, ol' Belle can probably tell you more about the song that I know.
Forced to admit that my first hearing of it was a Kazaa download. But I bought the album a short time later--far better sound, and my conscience is at ease.

I actually wish more of the lyrics from the old Verve songs were up on the site. "Queen Merka And Me" is also a big favorite of mine. Janis wrote some amazing stuff as a teenager!

If anyone wants to sit down and type them up, then send them to me as Word docs, I'll proof them and John will put them up. But no one around here has time, sorry!

I might just attempt that! In the mean time - I'd already typed up some others and will email once I work out how to convert wps to doc format.

With hanging head, I must confess that I first heard this song via Napster download. However, I purchased the CD AND the original vinyl shortly thereafter, both of which now bear Janis' personal signature of approval. And I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world
Well, I might consider in exchange for a tour of Kathleen Brogan's archives, but since she already has these I don't think I need to worry about having to go through with it.

Kathleen Brogan's archives? Im a newbie...
I would really like to get some vinyl but don't have a record player. Saw the Stars original album in a second handshop not so long a go so will have to get one. There's something about the crackles and pops, don't you think? A friend in CA recently sent me cassettes of Laura Nyro album which had been recorded from vinyl - was like a listening experience!

I still have a bunch of lyrics in print that I need to scan in...I was working on this with Kimbe before I broke my shoulder. Now that I am fully 2 handed again, I hope to get back to it soon. The lyrics I have that are not already posted include:
And I Did Ma
TheCome On
I'll Give You A Stone If You'll Throw It (Changing Times)
Janey's Blues
Let Me Be Lonely
Lover Be Kindly
Mrs. McKenzie
Pro-Girl
Ruby
Shady Acres
Slow Dance Romance
Then Tangles Of My Mind
Too Old To Go 'way Little Girl
Younger Generation Blues

Wow, Amy--I am most impressed! Since I usually mishear lyrics ("tea--a drink with German bread...."), I don't dare attempt such things unless I have a lyric sheet in front of me. Kudos to you and I'm sure a hearty round of applause from everyone on this board!

So it turns out the only ones i'd typed up that aren't already on the site are; 'Lover Be Kindly' and 'Time On My Hands'. I did once attempt 'A Song For All The Seasons Of Your Mind' but that was a toughy!

I just typed up and sent "Queen Merka & Me" and "She's Made Of Porcelain" to Janis. I'll do others now and then as I find time. I think I got most of it right, although there were two patches in "Queen Merka" where I wasn't sure of a word or two. Of course, I'm one of those who got very excited about Jimi Hendrix being gay when he sang (or so I thought) "'scuse me while I kiss this guy!":D

Yay cool I look forward to seeing "She's Made Of Porcelain" lyrics!
tea--a drink with German bread
LOL
Dave, have you been hiding a parodist talent I should know about? :D
Hi Amelio,
welcome to the board!
to explain...Kathleen is one of us avid Rudies who also happens to have the best collection of Janis Ian music of anyone. She sells on Ebay, as spinning stylus, I believe. She is a good source for knowing lyrics and such. She's been a little absent from the board lately, she must have a life or something. ;)
Another good source is yet another of or Rudies..who posts as MikeUK. Frankly he must be really busy lately, because this is the sort of thing he probably has already archived in an accessible database.
You've come to the right place though! Welcome!!

Hey thank you for the welcome Dar. I've liked Janis Ian's music for a while now, but while some artists have fell by the wayside i seem to find something in her music to renew that spark. She just wont go down!

Just sent Janis typed lyrics for "42nd St. Psycho Blues' and "Friends Again." I figure I'll keep posting the ones I do so we won't dupilicate each other's efforts. I intend to do "Bahimsa" next.

Dee, I think it's occasional limited hearing that is the problem rather than anything that could be called a talent. Mind, my first attempt at writing a song (mercifully, never finished) was a country parody entitled "I Lost My Horse".
And of course, from time to time it still occurs to me to take another look at:
"I learned the truth at eight and ten
That love was meant for other men,
Who smoked, drove 'round in big loud cars
And were old enough to drink in bars...."
(never mind the rest)

I actually thought of doing one called "At 84":
And when they put me in a home,
and I can't hear the telephone,
I'll sit alone and be ignored
when choosing sides for shuffleboard....:(

Saw a recent interview with Paul McCartney. He said that a woman was performing "When I'm 64" at some nursing homes. Only she had to change it to age "84" because the folks in the home didn't think 64 was very old!! <g>

The really tough part is getting used to the fact that The Beatles aren't 24 any more. Or the fact that I was one year old when they first arrived in the United States....
