KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - If you recently tweeted about how you were chillaxin for the holiday, take note: Fifteen particularly over- or mis-used words and phrases have been declared "shovel-ready" to be "unfriended" by a U.S. university's annual list of terms that deserve to be banned.

After thousands of nominations of words and phrases commonly used in marketing, media, technology and elsewhere, wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University on Thursday issued their 35th annual list of words that they believe should be banned.

Tops on the Michigan university's list of useless phrases was "shovel-ready." The term refers to infrastructure projects that are ready to break ground and was popularly used to describe road, bridge and other construction projects fueled by stimulus funds from the Obama administration.

And speaking of stimulus, that word -- which was applied to government spending aimed at boosting the economy -- made the over-used category as well, along with an odd assortment of Obama-related constructions such as Obamacare and Obamanomics.

"We say Obamanough already," the LSSU committee said.

Also ripe for exile is "sexting," shorthand for sexy text messaging, a habit that has caused trouble this year for public figures from politicians to star athletes.

Similarly, list makers showed distaste for tweeting, retweeting and tweetaholics, lingo made popular by users of the popular Twitter networking website. And don't even get them started on the use of friend as a verb, as in: "He made me mad so I unfriended him on Facebook," an Internet social site.

Male acquaintances need to find another word than "bromance" for their friendships, and the combination of "chillin" and "relaxin'" into "chillaxin" was an easy pick for banishment.

Also making the list was "teachable moment."

"This phrase is used to describe everything from potty-training to politics. It's time to vote it out!" said one list contributor.

"Toxic assets," referring to financial instruments that have plunged in value, sickened list makers so much the phrase was added to the list, along with the tiresome and poorly defined "too big to fail" which has often been invoked to describe wobbly U.S. banks.

Similarly, "in these economic times" was deemed overdue for banishment due.

Also making the list -- "transparent/transparency," typically used, contributors said, when the situation is anything but transparent.

One list contributor wanted to know if there was an "app," short-hand for "application" popularized by the mobile iPhone's growing array of software tools, for making that annoying word go away.

And rounding out the list -- "czar" as in car czar, drug czar, housing czar or banished word czar.

"Purging our language of 'toxic assets' is a 'stimulus' effort that's 'too big to fail,'" said a university spokesman.

Should be good....like the literal translation of Tina Fey's SNL impersonation!!!

Tina Fey most likely could write a better Sarah Palin book than Sarah Palin could.

Why does anyone continue to take this woman seriously? Ditto for Minnesota's own Michelle Bachmann, whose playbook is virtually identical.

"Drinking the kool-aid" and variants should be forever banned from the English language. Furthermore, anyone who employs them in an attempt to pass the phrase off as an intellectual or factual argument should be donated to science.

The truly scary thing about people who believe that Sarah Palin, et al will save the universe is that most of them are well-armed and, at least in their fantasy lives, prepared to use their weapons in defense of their ideals. This becomes even more frightening when you consider that most such people do not know what their ideals are, since they adopt them unquestioningly from anyone who shouts loud enough or claims to be a purveyor of "the real truth".

I have never heard the word "chillaxin" but I like it.... Can we keep it please? I'll take it out and play with it everyday. And now, if I wasn't going to play with the girls, I would just start chillaxin!

"Moonbat", a term used by talk radio and by people who believe Sarah Palin is profound. It is mainly aimed at anyone who expresses an idea with which they disagree and to which they have no response. As the term means nothing, it is difficult to understand its purpose.

I would put "liberal" on much the same footing. It has in effect become a form of the "N word" used primarily against people who are more intelligent and articulate than the speaker.

Colefan, tho i like "dude" at certain times, i like your list, tho the "Jesus Card" is one we use often against someone who is sucking up to my Dad, and it really fits nicely. When one of my nephews was three, he cleverly used the "Jesus card" against dad when th little guy was caught playing with the lights on the Christmas Tree...he told his grandpa " I just wanted everyone to see Jesus better" this was in no way his plan, as i watched him for half an hour playing with the lights and wanting to touch the one plugged in, but it was very effective for his cause.

That is something Hoops, kids seem to get it, adults - not so sure.

I know what you mean about the "Jesus Card" I tend to genuflect when the prophet plays, it seems to suffice.

I like the word "Dude" in the right context, such as "some dude just stole my car" but to use "dude" as the first word, and the last word of every sentence is what bugs me.

Elliot, lol, you're bad! Don't make me go Paris on ya!

Hmmm, what were those words Paris Hilton used that should be banned?

DaveM

Paris Hilton should just plain be banned, never mind what comes out of her mouth.

There is a phrase in military circles that absolutely drives me up the wall. "Seamless integration." As in, the seamless integration of communications networks - a condition that only exists in some fantasy world. Anyone who runs around talking about seamless integration of anything should have their lips seamlessly integrated.
