Neither the surgery or rehab is much fun, but the payoff is generally very much worth it. Best of luck to Pat for better function with less pain.

Oh buggar Beth! I have to have it done too, and your comments aren't encouraging:( I thought it was a condition just affecting picture framers in the main, but have since found out that's not the case. But the pain I feel, especially at night when I don't know where to put my hand in an attempt to relieve the pain, has got to be worth the surgery and dreaded rehab. I also thought I was just clumsy - constantly dropping things (which can be messy).

Lucille, here's the scoop on the surgery, per Pat - she had surgery on a Wednesday, took Percocet until Saturday (minimal amounts, I hasten to add) - had a Tylenol that Saturday afternoon - and by Sunday, was able to clear-headedly assure me that her right hand was in less pain than it had been in for years. In other words, the relief was immediate, and the only pain in that hand since has just been post-op surgical pain.
Her left hand is now clearly painful, and all the more so because the right is feeling so much better.
From everything I've read or heard, this surgery is one of the more successful, and you never have to do it again. (Or so they say.) The risks are minimal (of course, there's always a risk in surgery or with anesthesia), and the pay off is absolutely huge.
For what it's worth, Pat's doctor assured us that it had nothing to do with her profession. It's just arthritis of the basal joint, seen often in middle aged women, rarer in men. Luck of the draw...

I so glad that Pat is healing well and in less discomfort. And how cool is it to have a superstar as your nurse? So, if I had a little work done....

It seems ironic that I had broken that basal join on my left thumb about 12 years ago in an industrial accident, had a classic Fracture of Rolando, which delighted my hand doc no end, because he had never seen one before...my Xrays were the basis of his lecture that week.
He told me that he could almost guarantee that I would be in for arthritis relief someday, but so far I've experienced no discomfort from it at all, and have regained most of the strength in that joint, even though I had no treatment for it except to let it heal on its own.
I can imagine how painful it could be, though, and am so glad Pat got some relief from it...forever, we hope!

...

Thanks Janis (and Pat). Yes I remember that relief when I woke up from my knee replacement Op. The referred pain I had in my hip had gone completely.
