BOT spider?

I just answered a PM and looked to see who was online. There were many guests, but also several "MS bot spiders" and Google bot spiders. I'm vaguely aware of bots, but could someone like Paul or Amy explain to this tech-challenged person what these are and why they're visiting?

How do you think that Google and MS know where to find things when you do a search through them? Google and MS (amongst many others) send out little "bots" to keep track of things and report back.

Did a lot of reading and understand better, but not really well. Initially I regarded them as something vaguely sinister.

I feel most comfortable being goofed on here. I don't tend to take myself too seriously. There are times I say things tongue in cheek, but it may get lost in anything other than a face to face conversation.

I know just what you mean.... I discovered a tongue in cheek thing once, got all excited til' I realized it was just my tongue.... Oh well, Did I mention spiderbots make you itch? It was discovered that the name "spiderbot" in the ancient Pittsburghesse Pirate language loosely translated means either REDJACK did it or REDJACK's fault.

Don't listen to them. Botspiders are little 'spiders' that they can inject in to your blood and that will turn you into a Borg. At least, that's what happened in Star Trek...
