My first JI concert was the Miracle Row Tour at the Chicago Auditorium – March 31st 1977 to be exact. The opening act was Loudon Wainwright III. Why, I don’t know. Maybe they were label mates. But it was obvious that the audience was there for Janis. I was known for being a shutterbug growing up so I took my camera everywhere. And even though cameras were not allowed inside the show (sorry), I smuggled my 35mm Canonet 28 in. I got some really great pictures of the back of the heads of the people sitting in front of me…. I did not have a zoom so what pictures I got of Janis, she looked like a peanut on stage. When the show was over, I ran to the back alley of the Auditorium to meet Janis. I got two really good shots of what I thought was the RV that she traveled in. So, there I was up next to meet my icon with my camera around my neck and my tour book in hand for an autograph and guess what ? I FROZE. All I can remember is that she signed my book and her lovely shade of blue eye makeup and no picture. I totally forgot to have one taken after all that time ! That was very hard to live down from all my friends who’s unwanted pictures I was always taking. But it was a great show and a dream come true. You can’t get much better than that !!!
