View Full Version : Rudie vibes for Beth

(copied from other thread about Beth)

It seems that our concerns for Beth were well-founded. She called me from the hospital where she had surgery yesterday. They removed her right half (ascending) colon. She was a bit out of it, but otherwise, sounded good. It's estimated she'll be in about 5 days. The surgeon assessed that the left side was OK, so left it alone "for now." Because of H1N1, no one under age 15 can visit, so their kids can't see her. Verlann has been taking pictures to let them know that Beth is OK and being well cared for. She said she got the house decorated for Christmas before going into the hospital, so she can rest when she gets home.

How about lighting candles for Beth and her family?

After I get back from Ohio, provided my cold is gone, I'll get over to see her.

I'm sure all your prayers, good thoghts and Rudie vibes will be greatly appreciated.

oops, I thought I was starting a new thread with this. I think I'll copy it to a new one.

Judy, I think they knew the surgery was coming for some time, but they just had to wait until Beth was well enough to have it. Her diverticulitis was the reasong she was taking those antibiotics (that caused all the problems) in the first place.

Let's all send Rudie vibes, prayers and all things good for a quick and thorough recovery!

I got a call from Beth today. She does not remember calling me and chatting last week. I'm not surprised. I know things can be "fuzzy" for some time after surgery.

She got home on Friday, and is slowly improving. It will take some time, but she's hoping to be back to work by the end of January. She invited me to go to Olivia's concert on Sat. with the Indianapolis Children's Choir. I adore that organization, and I hope it works out that I can go.

We chatted a good, long time, and I'm so glad she's getting better! I know all of you are, too!

JanisManiaII is still up in the air, but she did express that it will have to be more of a "group effort" with lots of help from Rudies. I know we're all up for that!!

Get well, soon, Ms Beth!!

Karen: Thanks for keeping us in the loop about Beth. Continuing to send Rudie Vibes to her. Tell her not to worry about JanisManiaII. If it does happen in 2010, she knows she can count on us Rudies to help out in any way possible! Give her our love when you next speak with her...Verlann and the girls too!

Marcia :)

Thanks to all for your good wishes and for sending good thoughts and healing energy my way. And thanks, Karen, for posting for me. I spent the morning going from one MD visit to the next... I'm on my feet again and moving along steadily, a bit slowly. I have a brace on each leg below the knee to help lift my foot when I walk so I don't trip over them. They make a big difference. The surigcal incisions are healing well and in another month I can do some serious stretching and strengthening. In the meantime, I restart PT next week and will get back to the pool when the incisions are healed. I have persistent peripheral neuropathy in my legs and forearms resulting in fewer muscles being tirggered due to nerve damage, hence less muscle power for everyday tasks like walking and typing.... I'll know a lot more in a month as far as my new baseline post-op and am making plans with my employer to return to work ASAP. Hoping to be released by the end of Jan. I am being referred by my neurologist to Mayo Clinic. The wait is 6 mos to 1 year, so who knows by then. I certainly hope all of this is behind me by then and may not need to go.

I was more than stunned today when my surgeon said (while removing the staples from my abdomen) that all I probably really needed for the gut infection was amoxacillin, an excellent and safe basic antibiotic without the risk of neurotoxicity associated with Cipro and Flagyl.

My family is well. Verlann is, well, Verlann is who she is and I am extremely lucky. The kids are weathering this pretty well. We've been lucky to have a whole lot of support from family and friends and have been able to keep the kids' daily routines pretty well intact. So life is a little weird for them with my stuff but we're hanging together.

I've learned a whole lot through all of this and have known the goodness and generosity of many people. I'm extemely grateful to be alive and to have the chance to see more sunrises, to laugh with Verlann, to shake my head at the kids when they're being goofy, basically to be aware that I get to live. It's pretty cool.

Beth, life is such a hidden blessing, isn't it? We have moments of realizing usually. I consider myself lucky to notice many more of these moments because I lost my life for a time. I'm glad you and your family are in this life with me. many blessings to you

I just talked with Beth. She was calling from Clare's Christmas program at the School for the Blind. I wish I had gone! Beth sounded so good! We are making plans (Ned and me) to meet them at Olivia's Children's Choir concert tomorrow. It's being held at the church where Ned and I got married.

It was just great to hear her sounding so strong and "normal!"

Rudie vibes headed your way for continued improvement. Gosh you never cease to amaze me Beth! When I'm feeling sorry for myself or down in the dumps I only have to read a post of yours to feel uplifted.

Sometimes a connection will get you in sooner or even an email directly to the specialist. I done both. In my experience docs at the larger teaching hospitals like to correspond by email. Here's a doctors guide to getting an appointment: http://www.healthangle.com/resources/getting-doctor-appointment

Best to you and yours!

Thanks everybody. As so many of you know, recovery from surgery is a major pain and I was really concerned that there would be more neurological damage. My anaesthesiologists were fanatastic and extremely careful. The first two weeks were just bad. Period. Every day out from the surgerym though, is a little closer to "normal" life again! I restarted PT, with restrictions, today, and that will go forward. I know your good thoughts have supported my healing. Thanks very much.
