MANILOW MUSIC CHOSEN TO DRIVE OUT THE HOOLIGANS

Barry Manilow's music is being used in an effort to drive hooligans and noise polluters from a Sydney, Australia suburb. Officials in Rockdale believe that piping easy listening hits like MANDY and I WRITE THE SONGS through loudspeakers will rid their streets of youngsters who insist on blaring rap and rock music from the cars. The move comes after bosses at one Sydney shopping centre drove troublesome teenagers out of the mall by playing BING CROSBY tunes over and over again. Councillor BILL SARAVINOVSKI says, "There are restaurants nearby and people can't park in the car park because they're intimidated by these hoons (hooligans). "Daggy (unfashionable) music is one way to make the hoons leave an area because they can't stand the music."

Great idea. But what about the ordinary pedestrians who can't take Barry Manilow either? That would send me screaming away....especially "Copacabana" (shudder). If they really want to try turning the area into a ghost-town, Sammy Davis Junior's "Candyman" would do the trick. You know, if you look in the mirror and say "Candyman" three times, I hear Sammy Davis Junior actually appears....

Try gettin' yourself a cold brew in the Festhaus at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg. How long CAN a rational adult tolerate non-stop polka music? Well, ok, a ridiculously long time in my case, because it was an insanely hot day and I had a tremendous thrist for hops based beverages...but I was STILL sorely tempted to puncture my own eardrums...

I would think that non-stop reggae music would work better. ;)

Nonstop reggae music doesn't sound so bad to me. Rap music, on the other hand -- no wonder it goes so well with crack. Cocaine is an anasthetic...

As for Barry, ironically he didn't write "I Write The Songs." He did produce Bette Midler's Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee albums, though, so I guess we owe him some slack.;)

Sammy didn't show up because he's at my place, Redjack. I know how to conjure him up, but not how to make him go away. Put your eye back in, Sammy, you're scaring the cat....
