View Full Version : Need Rudie Vibes for Bat

Marcia Drummergal
11-23-2009, 05:49 AM
Many of you will remember that Bat had surgery back in March to remove a cancerous mass from her left lung. Today after having completed 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 33 radiation therapy treatments, her surgeon will be removing what remains of the cancer from her right lung.

This is major surgery. Her operation is scheduled today at 2:30PM EST. Your Rudie Vibes helped her before. I know they will help again.

Thanks.

Marcia :)

Marcia, how is she doing?
How are you?

I want to thank all of you wonderful Rudies and say that your vibes have truly helped. I believe that from the bottom of my heart.

{{{Janis}}} Thanks for asking about the both of us!

Barb/Bat made it through surgery like a champ. Her anesthesiologist remarked to me as they were wheeling her towards the OR, that she has a GREAT attitude.

Surgery took about 1 1/2 hours and then another 2 hours in recovery. It was a long afternoon but thanks to the support and company of a few dear friends, time went by quickly. She got to her room about 6:30PM. The doctor said the surgery went as well as they could have possibly hoped for! The tumor was removed leaving enough lung capacity that she should recover well. He mentioned that had it been located milimeters in a different direction, it could have left her tied to an oxygen tank for the rest of her life. Thank GOODNESS this was NOT the case! We now wait for the pathology results. Hopefully they will indicate that no further treatment is needed!

Bat was in some considerable pain last night as she had to go with an epidural instead of the usual pain meds. She didn't do so well with the other pain meds last surgery. I trust and hope they got her pain managed shortly after I left. I will be getting ready to visit her in a little while and will tell her about all of your Rudie Vibes. Please keep them coming. The next few days are not going to be fun. The chest tube is very painful.

Janis, as for me...I STILL have no diagnosis! I had 4 neuro tests last week. No results so I am guessing they didn't find anything. The doctors are all stumped. I am getting through with the support of good friends and the power of positive thinking. Soon we'll need to think about how we will support ourselves and survive....my disability money may be cut off without a diagnosis. But that is another story for another time.

Thanks again. I'll have more to report later!

Marcia :)

Great news about Bat! Rudie vibes to get her thru the pain ( chest tubes suck )and home and healthy again. Marcia, more rucie vibes for you too my friend. it is so wrong when the Dr's all say " I don't know what to tell you" about what seems like it would be simple to treat. Have the Docs considered Lyme disease. I have a friend who is going thru a Heck of a time with the weirdest symptoms, at more then one point losing his sight. he had been misdiagnosed for more than 6 years, now that they have started treating for lyme, things are slowly but surely moving forward. Just a thought, and my many many many prayers and vibes and positive thoughts

Yesterday morning they had Barb up and sitting in a chair. The epidural is working better for her pain than the morphine did last operation...and with fewer (if any) side effects. We had lunch together yesterday and I plan on doing that again today. We talked on the phone last night. She said she found a great nurse to talk to (hmm, should I be worried? ;) ) She said she told her her whole life story. I think I need to get more info! LOL

Obviously, her spirits are high. I told her you have been sending your well wishes and that includes our esteemed leader! :)

I saw Bat today. I had planned to have lunch with her as I did yesterday. However, they had increased her pain meds so she was in and out of it. The
x-ray they took today wasn't as good as it looked yesterday. I don't think that is unusual with this type of surgery. She is getting excellent care. They will take an x-ray again tomorrow. As long as her lung isn't inflating properly and as long as she still needs the chest tube, she will be staying in the hospital. Thanksgiving dinner will have to wait. I don't think she'll be home much before Sunday.....

Anyone remember when we lit the virtual candles last time? I went to that site but didn't see a way to make a separate page/pages for Bat. If anyone knows how, I'd appreciate it!

Yesterday they did remove the epidural and catheter. They are leaving the chest tube in until the last minute because they hope to avoid another bout of pneumonia which happened after her previous surgery. So Bat will call me when the tube is out and let me know when she will be free to come home. I have a few chores to do around here in the meanwhile!

Thanks from the bottom for all your wonderful well-wishes and Rudie Vibes!
Believe me, they work! Got home, read some good mail and got rid of much of the rest, and hit the sack! Lots of good rest, slept the clock around, pretty near...it was so nice not to have some vampire coming in at 4:30 am (I kid you not!) to collect blood by the pint, I swear! ...to be followed at hourly intervals by some sweet thing with a single pill, bucket of pills, more blood letting, blood pressure cuffing, temp taking, O2 saturation measurement, calls from the kitchen to remind me to order breakfast, lunch, dinner, and just about anything else that could be construed as 'care' but was really just designed to wake the patient as she was falling asleep trying to get some much needed bed rest.

The Anesthetist said I had a great attitude, eh? Believe me, it was all due to an intense desire to present a united front of 'Feeling really fine...now lemme out!' Needless to say, it didn't work, but it made me feel a little better anyway. He was a great guy and we hit it off very well. He didn't know if he'd be in the OR with me, but I asked if he could be to do it. He was, and gave me a very effective epidural which controlled pain very well. I just don't see why they had to remove it a full day before they took the drainage tube out...not a fun time.

I have the finest thoracic surgeon in Cincinnati, at least to hear the people who work with him talk! Everyone says that if it were to be one of their own family members, they would want him to do it...good enough for me!
The nursing staff was first rate, the care the same, and I left without anyone wishing I had not made it off the table, so I consider that a successful tour.
Tomorrow, I will make more Dr. appts. to follow up on all this, get a plan in place for the future, and thank them for giving me a future!

I could breathe fine if I could get rid of the terrible phlegm in the broncs, and I don't know if it comes from sinuses or the lungs, my thought is sinus. Perhaps a good dose of Robitussin will set me free from the wheezies and let me use that lung to capacity which is what I should be doing...because it hurts like HELL to cough. It beats strangulation, but not by much.

The surgeon told me that there were dead tentacles around the vena Cava and some other tube, and that the chemo and rad were very successful in killing off the tumor. What was left was just a tiny nubbin, and he wasn't even sure it had anything alive in it. He scraped, scrubbed and scoured away all the bad residues of tissue, shined things up to snuff, removed a wedge resection consisting of about 10% of the upper right lobe of the lung, which isn't much, considering. That's about all I remember, since he told me that as I was still pretty goofy...but he was very pleased, and so I guess I should be too!
None of the pictures since February have shown any indication of increase or return of cancer in either lung, so I'm one lucky OlBat!

One other thing to be thankful for: Son Tony is feeling well, still, and has managed to find a home with his dad in WI and get back on the Medicaid rolls, which he couldn't do in TX, so will be getting follow up on his treatment, too. Plus food stamps. Maybe a nice candle for Tony would help, too...we're wishing for a good outcome for him, too. I really like those candles! They're pretty and peaceful, and say all the right things.

Thank you all for you unvarying support and loving thoughts!
Now they all turn right around and go to Tony and Jenny!
Together, we can make good lives happen!

SO VERY GOOD to hear from the one and only Bat! the fact that you typed all that without a going off on some strange tangent and without adding or deleting all sorts of letters and symbols, leads me to believe that you are doing well. YAY! I am so happy you are home and healthy and more so every day. i had two of those danged chest tubes in for 5 weeks, so i know what you mean, they suck...lol, they hurt too. I also had a radiologist who liked to get in and out of work before the day started, so he'd show up at almost exactly 3:45 every morning for 5 weeks to take my x-rays. at that point in the am i had slept about 13 mins, and then the day began lolol. I don't know how they can take so much blood every day and not leave you bled out on your bed. When Marcia said they were releasing you after the day of having a hard time with your lungs, I was so happy, cause that meant no pnuemonia! whew! if you get past that, things are usually good. don't think all the vibes and wishes and candles will stop just yet, but I will add Tony and Jenny is already on my list of candles, prayers, vibes and all. Jenny is going to come out of this just fine, I know it. and Tony will do well too. I have faith. I'm so glad you are home, Bat. I hate it when someone i care about is in the hospital, not that they don't do wonderful things, I just know how scary it can be, and to be perfectly honest, i have PTSD from the delusions of my last long visit, that hits me when others , like you and Jenny, and other loved ones are in there. I look at it as my part in taking up some of your pain, a small sacrifice, for someone i care so much for.

Th2#$%%^%&^%KS.,Noel. Is that better?

I think that last stint in the bed was for you the worst...I can't possibly imagine going through what you did, and without psych meds, it had to be hellish. So forget I was ever there...that will eliminate one source of PTSD.

I'm going to try to do that, too, and hope that I'll never see the serious side of a hospital bed again, EVER!!!

You've been a brick through this whole sordid mess, girlfriend!;)

Well, Kath called and told me you were back in the hospital, but I guess there is an up side to the fact that I didn't have 10 seconds to go online! By the time I did, YOU"RE HOME!!!!!! Love it, how up you sound, and you guys! Now heal fast!

Leslie (and Pat)

Thanks Leslie, Pat and all! You should see Glinda, by the way! You thought she was "mellow". I think we named her after the wrong witch! She is THE brattiest cat we've ever had and into EVERYthing! Thanks again for bringing her to us. Glad we got to visit, however briefly!

Marcia :)

Geeze, Leslie...I was only in for 6 days! You must have had quite a vacation from the net!

Thank you all...I've been living on Robitussin to try to get rid of cloggy throat, promote clear breathing, and it worked...just have to decide what to eat now. Hungry but not...frustrating. Back to 'nothing sounds good', but that will pass, I know.

Final visit to surgeon next Tuesday, he'll tell me all the stuff he did and expectations.

Hugs to you all, and many, many thanks for being there!

Karen, guilty as charged DOH!! Peggy and ME!

Di...that was a typo and I see Marcia corrected you before I got a chance to.

the misuse of 'your' for 'you're' is a pet peeve of mine...I have a little nazi in me too I guess.

your for you're and there for their etc...drive me nuts...the editor by day (read me) had to be the group editor in EVERY learning group for my Masters degree and I swear the guys I had in my groups might have been technical whizzes with computers but they couldn't write their way out of a paper bag...GEEZ!

I was only in 4 classes with more than just myself and all men in my group and three of those classes we kept the same group from the previous two classes since we all worked sooo well together. Hated to break that group up.

Dynamic duo huh? LOL That would make her "Batwoman" and I am Robin?! Hmmm

I am playing on the computer and the Batster has been dozing on and off next to me. She needs to start getting her Batappetite back again! I let her slack off a few days but no more. It is either solid food or Ensure!!

That should be, "Hated to break up that group." I'm just sayin'...

I knew that Dar's "your" was a typo. RW's know those things... :p

Marcia, will the threat of Ensure get her to eat? I kind of miss my ensure life, it was simple and familiar lolol. you're not Robin, your Marcia, maybe you need some of my meds? you're getting confused?? lol just just kidding. I can't tell you how happy I am that you are even considering going to a Janis show, it's been too long baby.

Karen, you kill me "RW's know those things... " hahahahahahahahahah!

Actually Hoops....last night Bat ASKED me for some Ensure! It was chocolate and tasted good to her. We're hoping to spark her appetite again. Any day now she will be asking for pizza....which she was still asking for a few minutes before her surgery!

Marcia :D PS When I was a kid, I was either drawing pictures of drums or of Batman and Robin! ;)

Wherever pizza is involved, I'm a pushover...but it's really the good company that's important. I could eat most anything if I had good people to eat with.
NY in the spring...ah, what could be more beautiful? I don't know, Hoops... Richard's pizza is just about the best I've eaten, but I'd be willing to try yours! Right now, anything to stimulate the appetite is key, and probably a good steak and a pile of spinach would be about the best!

Speaking of pizza... just had two pieces at lunch today from our cafeteria....

a slice of plain cheese pizza
a slice of mushroom and bacon

they make good ones with a nice whole wheat crust.

Yup.
Right now, I feel like food is the answer to recovery, or at least part of it!
Still weak as a cat, but took a shower today, which I couldn't have done a couple days ago, so getting stronger...it's just taking a lot longer than before.
Keep the good thoughts coming! I love you all!
