This has probably been a thread subject before, but I'm curious: aside from Janis, what other artists do Rudies listen to? Mine include Melanie, Jimmy Buffet, Patsy Cline, Dusty Springfield, Louis Armstrong, the Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, Buffy Ste-Marie, Paula Cole, CSNY, Mahalia Jackson...and lots of others. Those are just some of my particular favorites. I listen to pretty diverse music, but I do tend to prefer older, more mature artists in general. How about you?

I like all kinds...Kodo(Japanese percussive), Beethoven,Beethoven and then there's Beethoven, old school blues,-Son House,Skip James,Robert "Pete" Williams,Balinese traditional, Hawwaian traditional, Native American traditional, the B52's,R.L. Burnside, Jeff Buckley, Carlos Nakia, Tibetan monks chanting. But the best music is early in the morning when the birds are up and about, the wind is stirring and green life is unfurling in the soft light of the sun.

the list is just too longbut i have 2...yes 2 #1's and they are Janis and Joni mithcell.i used to say there were certain forms of music that i did not like, Rap being one, disco being another but that has changed. i've liked wille nelson and dolly parton since the first time i heard them, yet there is other country music that makes my stomach chun. oh and Neil young is near the top "Live musici is better bumper stickers will be issued" i think that is from Neils 'hawks and doves' My newphew s who live with me they are 4yr.3yr and 11 month call my car the Janis Ian car cause i have som much of her stuff on it and in it. Just before ...well let's say... the incident, the first one anyway, i gave away about $1000 worht of Stevie Nicks boot leg.

I also have a wide variety of tastes in music. Besides our lovely web hostess, John Mellancamp, Bob Segeer, Bruce Springsteen (my favorite guy), INXS, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan, Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Elton John, Creed, Melissa Etheridge, Annie Lenox, Janis Joplin, Madonna, Cher, Tina Turner, Sugarland, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker........oh the list can go on and on. I also like a lot of the late 80's early 90's big hair rock bands (popular when I was in school;) ). Have lots of those CD's. There is not a whole lot of music that I don't like.

I'm really glad I asked. I had a theory that other Rudies would like a wide variety of music, and I'm glad to have it verified! Thanks for the responses, everyone.
Glad to see you mentioned Jane Olivor, Dee. She's also one of my favorites -- I can't believe I forgot to mention her! Now there's somebody who should record some Janis Ian songs!:)
It's really hard to include all my favourite other artists, PT.
My list is just too long. :)

Speaking of retros, just read this in the NYTimes.
Joan Jett keeps it simple. (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/08/arts/music/08jett.html?hp&ex=1149825600&en=5e05ad8904b04301&ei=5094&partner=homepage)
To show you how clueless I was in the 80's, it never occured to me that she would appeal to "young, hand-holding lesbian couples".
But I can see it now.
Joannie, you OK with me girl.

I keep seeing people on other folk's lists I really should have put on mine. Laura Nyro, of course! But there are so many people whose music has meant something to me, it really is impossible to list them.
Right now I'm excited because I just learned that Ronee Blakley's two albums have finally been released on CD, after having been unavailable since the 70s. She's a wonderful singer-songwriter (remember her in Robert Altman's Nashville? Can't wait to hear her again.:)
Lots of artists, lots of music. Depending on my mood. I don't like R&B, house, techno and those kind of things. Don't like gangstarap either.

Illinois Bill,
We have similar tastes. I would put Laura Nyro near the top of my list. Janis, is of course, number 1. I also like Maria Muldaur, have seen her perform several times. Eva Cassidy is another favorite. I also like Linda Rondstadt. I listen mostly to female vocalists. I also like Mozart and am fond of Viennese Operettas and Broadway musicals.

Many, many other favorite artists: Prince, Teena Marie, P-Funk, Me'shell Ndegeocello, Steve Vai, Tori Amos, Red Hot Chili Peppers...just to name a few...my new favorite group are these three chicks in SF called "Sistas in the Pit", a funk rock trio...they are so so so cool! :)

The Cleveland Wrecking Company, Swingle Singers, and Arlo Guthrie are some pretty special talents out there from the past, as is early Melissa Manchester.
Haven't heard too much contemporary that is worth much, but the singing groups that started with the Mills Bros, Ames Bros, 4 Aces, up through Chanticleer were all pretty special. Of course, my favorite singers of all times were the Andrews Sisters...Bette Midler did some spectacular stuff of theirs, too.

One of my biggest thrills as a singer was when I was working as half of a duo and we opened for Arlo Guthrie and Melanie. When we went on, there were three thousand people there. (I was so nervous I basically left my body and watched somebody else do it!)
It also provided one of my most embarrassing moments. It was at an outdoor arts festival in a state park, and the organizers were freaked out because Melanie and her son and husband were driving around and around the park, unable to figure out how to get in. I was supposed to introduce her, so I was nervous too. Arlo and I were hanging out near the steps leading up to the stage. We performers had these plastic ID bracelets on our wrists, and as we waited for her to show up I kept glancing at mine. He noticed and said, "You do realize that's not a wristwatch, don't you?" :o
She got there and all went wonderfully. I avoided Arlo's eyes for the rest of the day -- not his problem, just mine. He's a sweet guy. But God, was I embarrassed!
