Mandatory Draft Bill Snuck In - To Be Debated 6-6-6
6-4-6

On February 14, 2006, Congressman Charles Rangel (Democrat - NY) introduced a bill (Universal National Service Act of 2006 - HR 4752 IH) aiming at drafting everyone - men and women alike - from the ages of 18 to 42 into the military for a minimum period of 2 years.

Or to quote the bill: "To provide for the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States, including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes."

The House is to convene on June 6 (06/06/06] to debate and possibly adopt this bill, that is, unless a vast public outcry succeeds in derailing this insanity, which you can do by writing a letter of protest to your congress person through

Phone calls are even better. The numbers of all US Representatives are at:

Just got through bolding something that someone else brought to my attention. Now that they've done that, my views on this matter have changed somewhat and I now think it might actually be a good thing,.... depending on whether or not the draftees really have a choice between military or civilian service. Who decides? It also depends on what those "other services" might turn out to be. This could be something akin to what Clinton suggested and I believe started at least to a certain degree.

I'm against anything that forces people to do something against their will. And the "and for other purposes" sounds suspiciously like the phrase in everyone's job description, "performs other duties as required," conveniently vague and open-ended...in other words, they can force whatever they want on you.

Very true. That's why "the devil's in the details" to be sure. It could be a good thing,.... depending on those darned details. Remember the "CCC" (Civilian Conservation Corps) from depression days? More details and a hammering out of those details is definitely needed imho. This could also be an attempt by Rangel to get the GOP to finally admit that only the "poor" are good enough to go get shot up for our country. Either way this could be a good thing. Details... details...

I am completely convinced that if there had been a mandatory draft in 2004 that Bush would have NEVER gained re-election...this war of his is righteous enough to send someone else to, but no way the middle class on up would have voted for the man who would continue to extend a war that they or their children would be called up and sent to.

Agreed most wholeheartedly!

My eldest son was over there once and thought about going again as an "independent contractor" for a hefty sum,..... until we all convinced him that a poor, living, son/father/grandson is far preferable to a rich, headless one.

My youngest son has been over there SIX FREAKIN' TIMES already! You think things might have been different if Bu$h's own daughters had been tagged to go?
