Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie, I am new to Janis Ian’s music. So I am a new “rudie” I guess. I am 32 and live in Kansas City. I’m single and don’t have any human children (yet..) I have 3 cats, Biscuit, Hanna & Mouse. I am currently unemployed (looking of course) and usually work as a paralegal or legal assistant. Growing up all I wanted to do was be a country singer. I still can sing, but I don’t perform anymore. (I am hoping to start again, maybe in folk or light pop.) In fact, I was a country fan until it started sounding pop. (Which was about 1991) But I didn’t stop listening to the new stuff until around 2002, but I still listen to the classic country (my favorites being Dottie West, Steve Wariner, The Judds, the Forester Sisters, etc.) Looking for something different to listen too, I began listening to the Carpenters in 2003 and Captain and Tennille in 2006.
I sort of went backwards when listening to Ms. Ian. I attended the Wildflower Festival in Kansas City where I first saw her. That was in 2001 (admittedly I don’t recall much about her performance, I wish I remembered more. I have an excellent memory, but that is eluding me.) About a month ago I was at the library and found her autobiography I picked it up on a lark (as a music lover I knew that it would probably keep my interest at least) I was absolutely fascinated! I loved the book and decided to get a CD or LP (I collect records.) I went to my local record store and left with the LP of “Miracle Row,” then downloaded the free songs from her website. I was very impressed. I borrowed the autobiography CD from the library. Then I bought “Revenge” on CD and “Janis Ian” on LP. Wow!!! I love them.
Anyway I am looking forward to talking with everyone about Ms. Ian’s music and everything that goes along with it! :)

Well, HELLO, Stephanie, welcome to our little Rudie family on the web. Isn't it fun when you discover something wonderful like Janis' music.
We are quite the lot here .... a great little clump of people; we don't bite... well, maybe if you get between us and a table of food.... so kick back, and we look forward to your banter about all things Janis and otherwise....

Hiya Stephanie, welcome aboard :)
New to Janis's music.... Lucky you! So many treasures yet to discover! The all time classic Between The Lines, the hauntingly beautiful and head on Breaking Silence, the tender and contemplative Billie's Bones, the stripped bare Folk Is The New Black, the precious live album Working Without A Net... Oh well, I'm sure you get the picture: in time you'll own them all :D Just some friendly advice: don't call Janis Ms Ian too often, she'll thunk you <grin>
Anyway, as Mary said, we're a pretty diverse bunch of people from all over the world, discussing any topic you can think of, but mainly - of course - Janis and food. We love both. Equally, I think. Sooooooooo, two questions for you: 1) what's your favourite Janis song so far? And 2) what's your favourite dish? :D
Btw, I'm Agnes, Dutch Rudie and the resident Pirate cook. Long story, you'll find out ;) Meanwhile, make yourself comfortable!

I'll go ahead and let you know.....I am the one with most of Janis' stage clothing..... I have never stolen any items but I always have my eyes glued to what items Janis is wearing... even in pics that get posted I pay close attention to detail....the only time I ALMOST got Janis' pants right off her.... ha ha ha...was at JanisMania during the auction.... I was the highest bidder off the pants she was wearing at the moment..... well, Janis is the one responsible.... however she did say I wasn't getting them right then... but I eventually did and they are framed with another pair of her pants and a shirt....
davem always gives me good ideas of how to disguse myself and swipe items but I have never had to result to any of them....
welcome to the rudie clan and enjoy yourself... you WILL love it here.....

Welcome Stephanie! I guess it always surprises me when someone "just" discovers Janis. But it is never too late! Welcome to our fold. You'll fit in here just fine! Keep enjoying. Like Agnes said, you have a lot of music to catch up on!

In her update Janis said her popularity was on the rise, so hurray for new discoveries. Glad you found your way here, Stephanie.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes.
To answer the two questions from Agnes.
1. My favorite song so far is "Days Like These" (Especially the part of "you can't reap what you don't sew..." I was thinking Oops... Maybe I am wasting my talent..)
2. Oh boy.. Food. Well I like anything Chinese and Japanese and anything that comes from the ocean. Mexican as well.
Again thanks for all the welcomes and I look forward to "meeting" more people too!:D

Welcome to the Klump of Rudies. It's a great place to be!
Welcome to the forums, Stephanie. Interesting that Miracle Row was the first Janis Ian album you found since it's always been one of my favourites.

Well I hope she does come near here so I can see her. The only problem is that I live an hour away from Topeka, KS and the moronic Fred Phelps church. When I went to see Dolly Parton in 2002 some of his group called and made threats against her. The decision was made that she would not greet her guests as planned and the audience could not take any pictures. Since then they have protested Olivia Newton-John and even the Hannah Montana concert I took my cousin to see. (I never heard about any threats against them however.) I'm not saying it would happen (seeing or hearing about the "church" makes my hackles go up) to Ms. Ian, but if I want to meet her I may have to wait til elsewhere.
On the plus side, when she performs in Nashville it gives me an excuse to go there! (I LOVE Nashville) :D

Hiya Stephanie,
Welcome to the klump, a very safe place on the internet where even the psychotics are friendly.... Don't worry REDJACK, I won't mention you by name...
As you become more familiar with the website I'd suggest you explore all the hidden little corners... Janis is nearly as prolific a writer as singer, songwriter and though I only agree with her 94.3% of the time on things I often enjoy seeking the mysterys hidden within the website.... You've heard mention of the friendliness and sociability of the various rudies, well I can tell you it's true... In our travels Betty and I have met a vast number of rudies face to face at shows all over the East and Midwest and I can tell you that along with great music this is also a place filled with friendships that include Janis, Staff and Rudies... There are so many stories that I could tell you... And you know as strange as it they may seem they are all true... But then again you don't really want to hear about our Dear Lucille from Austraila (Not the one named after the dog I think but might be, still not clear about that after meeting her a zillion times....She was able to have a major hotel (The Comfort Suites in Pittsburgh) Evacuated and flooded with fireman and police... Nor will I mention our wonderful Fiend Marjan from the Netherlands who wandered Manhatten aimlessly looking under the figleafs of the various statues to see what was hiding.... You don't need to know about one of our younger and wiser rudies, The very sweet and happy Songdragon and her twin sister and their antics at the picnic... Amazing, Rudies may be a strange sort but Songdragons Parents evidently don't fear us as she has been turned loose to travel parts of Europe seeing Janis Tour and visiting Rudies... We have assorted Pirates... A Pirate Cap'n, in Pittsburgh that can cook up a storm between his evil raids on unsuspecting villages in Pa., and also Our own Pirate Queen Evil Eva from Holland, who prides herself in having enough shoes to equipe a medium sized European army with footwear.... We have a "Head Thunker" who has been known to thunk on peoples heads in Chicago named Karensews, Yes that was a couple years ago but I'm still taking aspirins for that one... And We have the Most Holy and Supreme Weiner Girl from Conneticutt who has on occassion been held hostage and ended up making a wrong turn in Pittsburgh and ending up in Nashville, Yes she was even in Virginia when we celebrated the "State of Virgina Fruit", saurkraut...Not to mention taking photos of Virginia State Troopers in the performance of their duties at mile marker 70 of rte 81.... I'm still not sure why Betty let her out of the trunk:mad:..... Yes Stephanie there truely is a Janis Klaus, if you doubt this be safe and save your pennies and nickels for the Festive Holiday sale in December.... and you know there might even be another Rudie Auction!!!! This year I am going to sell the SAXMAN!!! Every Rudies has a story and over time I'm sure you will learn all about them all.... Welcome and Enjoy your selection of websites and artists to get involved with... You cannot have done better in your choice.... Oh and at this particular moment I suggest you get the CD "Night Rains" my very favorite (Until the next CD starts)...
In closing stay well, best to you and yours and WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GET BETWEEN JENNY AND JANIS'S PERFORMANCE WARDROBE!

Welcome Stephanie, kick your shoes off, relax your mind...
One of the great things about discovering a singer/songwriter, writer, or any artist for that matter way after the start of their career is that you don't have to wait for the next song, CD, book, play, sculpture, etc. There's a whole body of work waiting for you to get to know...or waiting to get to know you. Your biggest challenge will be to take your time and get to know all the parts along the way...but don't worry, you can always go back and pick up more and more with each listen.
Glad you saw the book and decided to give it a try...guess it kept your interest...or actually sparked or ignited your interest...
and hey...don't stop singing...sing more and more for fun, for joy, for your friends, for your family, but most of all for yourself, belt it out and have some fun...jm

I still sing for family and friends. I sang at at my best friend's wedding in 2001 and my sister's wedding in 2003 (I had pneumonia during that one.) I sing for myself all the time.
Unfortunately the last performance I did, which was in 2000 (I believe) at a festival. During the second song my mouth suddenly went dry, and I couldn't stop since I was using background music instead of a band and the sound guy had walked away. I was motioning my mom, in the first row, to get me a drink. (I would have settled for anything at that point. It felt as if I had swallowed dirt.) I was thoroughly embarrassed. And (Not an excuse I know,) but the little stage fright that I before that is now exaggerated. I try to remember that many performers have said in the past, "If you're not scared then it means nothing to you to be on stage."
I'm having a music room made in my parents house, so hopefully I'll get to hone my skills again and begin performing again.:)

Welcome aboard Stephanie. I'm relatively new to Janis' music-still can't figure out why I didn't discover her in the 60's and 70's but maybe I did and fogot? I'd love to do the last three years over again, learning Janis' music, getting to know everyone, having Janis write her book AGAIN!
I don't do a lot of chatting on the message board as I'm usually too busy playing with my mouse trying to see what goodies I can dig up.
I'm also one of the few on the boards with no musical skills what-so-ever! I can't sing, even out of tune, and if I were in school today I'm sure I would have been put in a "special music class"! Sounds like you were one of those born with the gift.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

Well Stephanie, you certainly don't need any more "welcoming" since you're quite a regular here. This thread, though, is still valuable for its historic value. The Rudies are so truly themselves, it's a real pleasure! ;)
