New York City mayor announces strong support for marriage equality

In his weekly radio address Sunday, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg announced he supports marriage equality and urged New York's highest court to rule in favor of five gay couples seeking the right to marry. But regardless of the way the New York State Court of Appeals rules in the case, to be heard this week, Bloomberg said he expects same-sex weddings to be performed in the city soon, reports local television station NY1.

And! I have a good feeling about a couple court rulings that are going to be happening pretty soon... Washington state's supreme court is overdue for a ruling on its gay marriage case. They heard arguments on the cases over a year ago and their ruling has been "expected any day now" for months! Every Thursday (their rulings are usually passed down on Thursdays) I get my hopes up, check the news, and then there's nothing. I thought they might have been waiting for the state to pass its nondiscrimination law (30 years in the making!) that was finally passed a couple months ago, but alas no ruling. What could they be waiting for?

And in other states:
"Besides Washington, New Jersey's Supreme Court heard arguments in a same-sex marriage case in February 2006 and New York's highest court will take up a similar case in May 2006. Rulings in those states are not expected for months. Lower courts in California, Maryland and New York already have followed Massachusetts and found a right to same-sex marriage in their state constitutions. Lower courts in New Jersey ruled that same-sex couples did not have a constitutional right to marriage."

I had no clue Bloomberg used to be a Democrat before running for mayor  Wonder what changed his mind?

Seems like the whole politics deal is just a game and whoever plays it well gets to have a career in it.

I know this isn't big news, but my church (The Unitarian Church of Harrisburg) just adopted support of marriage equality as its official policy. With no opposition. It doesn't change the laws, but at least I know I'm going to the right church!:)

Thanks, David.

Actually, I should clarify -- my church has performed same sex marriages for years. But we just had a congregational meeting, and one of the questions was whether the church should make supporting the political and legal struggle for same sex marriage its official position (homphobic legislators are trying to push a constitutional amendment here banning gay marriage, and several of our members are involved in lobbying and demonstrating against it). So now, when we're asked if that's the church's official position, we can say it is. (Doing the happy dance!)

Our church also had the dubious honor of Fred Phelps and Company coming here last spring to picket on our lawn. We had standing room only attendance that day; the choir sang "Everything Possible," and I sang Peter Allen's "Love Don't Need A Reason" solo. Our minister, who is a gay man, gave a lovely sermon about how sad the demonstrators really were and how we shouldn't hate them back. It was a beautiful service expressing our solidarity. It was quite a contrast -- our congregation greeting and hugging each other, our kids playing happily, the parking lot filled to overflowing with our cars -- while this little handful of people stood pathetically out there holding signs with hand-scrawled slurs and obscenities. It was pretty obvious which religion was the loving and positive one.

That's awesome, ponytail!

Oh, and if you want to confuse a friend of mine, say hello to Laura (from Ryan Kitko) next time you see her in church. She's the gal in the wheelchair ;) I think she's still going to the UU in Harrisburg... Should really give her a call sometime, too, instead of sending messages through people on the JIMB. :D
