View Full Version : Pet Peeves

The recent ABC thread got me thinking about pet peeves...for our international friends a pet peeve can be something rather small that personally gets on your nerves that may not phase anyone else.

So here's one that drives me nuts: People who wait until their ENTIRE purchase has been rung up and the amount they owe stated before they begin to reach for their wallet/purse/whatever. I want to shake them and shout "did it never cross your mind that they were going to ask you to pay for this stuff?!?"

Anyone else?

DaveM

Ooooh, that's a favorite. Along with people who wait in line at the Post Office to buy one stamp or who appear to have never sent a letter before.

Folks who stand in line at pizza places in malls, airports, etc. and when they get to the head of the line, ask "what kind of pizza do you have?" despite the large menu hanging overhead.

K-Mart clerks. No matter what they are doing or not doing.

People who take up two or more parking spaces, parking their trucks at a 45 degree angle in the apparent belief that this will protect them from being scratched or otherwise insulted.

Anyone who drives on public streets to work but claims they need a four wheel drive pickup truck to get there in case of bad weather.

Any Republican who appears on any broadcast medium.

The producers of "America's Got Talent", who are undoubtedly scouring the countryside in search of a large group of women who look exactly like Susan Boyle in the hope that they can then claim to be doing "something different".

People who bring boomboxes when they stay in motels.

Sometimes late at night I watch what I consider wholesome TV shows. Often there’s a commercial ad with a prim, young woman named Mary wearing operator headphones talking about training in a career in whatever. That’s okay. But then the very next commercial shows another young woman named Sparkles -she’s dressed in a tight low-cut crop top and is promising scintillating conversation just dial this number, only $3.00 a minute! Plus often immediately after that is another commercial showing a trio of young women also dressed in scanty clothing showing off their flat stomachs, playing billiards, and I guess these three are receiving telephone calls also. (That must be it. I don’t think they want to play pool with the television viewers.) And all I can think of at these times is please take me back ASAP to Fresh Prince, or to Raymond, or to the Golden Girls! :) :) :p

People who talk on cell phones while checking out in any retail establishment. They act as if the clerk is not even there.

I have often thought there should be "cell phone police" who go about with a large bucket full of some very unsavory liquid and, on encountering someone engaging in cell phone abuse, grab the phone, drop it into the bucket, and inform the person that they can have their phone back if they are willing to reach in and get it.

Me too, Bill! If it were legal, I'd harpoon their tires on the spot! And no, I am not joking.

The second biggest pet peeve: parent who let their kids SCREAM unendingly in public places or on public transportation and seems to think that's just fine. The kids I pity. The parents I'd like to boot in the butt!

Just a couple of weeks ago, Ned and I were at Borders, and in walks a guy talking loudly on his cell phone. I did NOT want to hear it, so I went another direction. He followed me. It seemed that wherever I went, there he was. He was looking at nothing in the store (I think his wife was), he was just wandering and talking! I was getting extremely irritated, and he had no awareness of the daggers I was shooting his way. I think his wife became aware, though. It thoroughly ruined my visit to the bookstore. IDIOT!

Okay, okay... I have some too...

Dumb people
People who talk on their cellphones in a restaurant
Drunks who travel in the same train as I do
People who tell sexist / racist / homophobic jokes and tell me to lighten up because 'it's just a joke'

Actually those aren't pet peeves. They annoy me to no end.

Eva

DaveM

Technically, they're illegal, but there are a few devices available that will jam cell phones from a relatively short range. It could be a lot of fun to carry one of these in your pocket and when you run into someone like this, just press The Red Button and make their call go bye-bye. You might have to do it a few times, but after that, they're bound to wander off in search of a better signal.

People who put earbuds in and sing along are especially "entertaining". They seem to be the same folks who always sing a bit too loud in church.

Hahaha! I did that once in a recordstore. I was 14 or 15 and I just lost myself in the music and forgot I was in a public place. It was the first few minutes of Adam and the Ants' 'Prince Charming' and I sang it really bad because I couldn't hear myself :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lCzIMacsEs You can imagine how 'happy' the people around me were. My friends were very embaressed and they never forgot about it :D

Houston, we have a problem. All of yous merkins pronounce jewellery incorrectly (let alone spell it correctly). It is jewell - ERY in the Queen's English.

My two pet peeves are (and one of them occured yesterday)

When giving your name and address - "Is that Miss, Mrs, or Ms." I asked yesterday if they would ask a man what his marital status was, and guess what? They got pissed with me. I just hate it!

The other is grammar, and using the wrong word. I could of decided not to buy what I was buying when asked my title, and I would of, but it was such a great bargain.

Oh, and another one, "I aksed them if they would of aksed a man to state his marital status".

Don'''''t get me started on apostrophe'''''s:D

Why is it that people in supermarkets especially will find the narrowest spot in a very long aisle, then leave their cart parked there, or alternately, pair up with someone else who also has a cart and launch into a conversation just as someone wants to get past them?

People who don't take their hats off indoors or when the flag goes by in a parade.

This is not exactly connected, but I recall from one of my trips to Texas being in a restaurant where a group of 20-somethings (yes, each with a greasy baseball cap on) had occupied one table and were making a racket. At some point they started trash-talking one of the staff and generally using a lot of not ready for prime-time language. At that point, a older fellow who was dining along got up, went over to their table and said: "I'm sorry, perhaps you gentlemen did not notice, but there are ladies present".

They got very quiet after that. Must say I was impressed.

Each year for the past 30 or so, Jim Nabors has sung Back Home Again in Indiana for the opening of the Indy 500 race. And each year, he sings the 2 wrong words! He sings "burning bright" instead of "shining bright," and "How I long..." instead of "Then I long..."

I don't know why they don't have someone who is actually from Indiana to sing that song, because anyone who has been a 4th-grader in this state can tell you the right words! (4th grade is when Indiana history is taught.)

Here are the official lyrics, compliments of wikipedia:

Back home again in Indiana,
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight, still shining bright,
Through the sycamores for me.
The new-mown hay sends all its fragrance
From the fields I used to roam.
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash,
Then I long for my Indiana home.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a biggie, but it bugs me. This was brought to mind because the local news just ran an item on Nabors' singing the song for this weekend's race.

One of mine is around spelling and grammar, especially in signs. I can't help that one, my Mom was an English teacher, so that red pen was always there.

Probably my biggest pet peeve is when I really need help with something important, and I call 'Customer Service' only to connect with someone in another country who is very polite and really wants to help, but just can't.

And, of course, the opposite is 'Customer Service' in this country with people who are not cut out for that line of work and who don't care.

So right, Sara! When my kids were in elem. school in Illinois, we got a weekly "class update." I was so tempted to take my red pen to it and send it back. Hers were mostly punctuation errors.

Tonight on the radio I heard some woman, over and over, say "ik-SETra" for et cetera (etc.). Around here, it's usually mispronounced as "ik SETter a." I wanted to yell at the radio, "Fer krissakes, it's ET, not IK!"

And don't get me started on the ones who say "expresso" for "espresso," or "ex scape" for escape."

This is me, tucking away my soapbox.

Along with loud motorcycles, I detest the "BOOM-BA-BOOM" of cars and trucks belonging to the idiots who don't think I might want to listen to my own music. That horrid sound is usually comng from a vehicle that clearly should have had the money spent on the CAR and not the noise-maker.
