I'm sure a lot of you will know about Pandora, the site that allows you to download free (if rather random) music tracks. I can't access it any more because I live in England, but here's one that I can access and that seems to be even better. It's better because you can specify what artist and what song you want, and repeat them if you want to (or if you miss the beginning or something when you're trying to record them). It works in a similar way to Pandora, you set up an account and download a small piece of software, and from then on you have access to their (considerable) music archives free. If you pay £10 a month you get no advertising, if you go for the free deal you get occasional adverts between songs, but never during songs. The download quality is good and I turn them into 'wav' files for CD burning using Total Recorder. Any kind of sound recording software will do. Or of course you can rely on being able to access the downloads any time you want to, but sites like this have a habit of disappearing.
They have a fairly good Janis Ian catalogue, but with lots of gaps. They've got almost everything that Dory Previn recorded so I've re-created my old vinyl collection of her songs in digital form. Lots of other 60s/70s stuff too.
Isn't the internet wonderful?
Almost forgot, here's the link: http://www.spotify.com/
