Obviously a photo taken in her teens. Exactly where and when, maybe Kathleen knows. Looks like an empty shotgun shell in her hand or an empty roll of pennies??

I've got the magazine. I think it's a tootsie Roll.

Well, whatever it is, there's a bunch of them on the window sill next to her. I'm hoping they're penny rollers.

Or did she get that from an unborn Michael Phelps?--or perhaps it's a Havanna cigar?...ok bad jokes!

Ah, that's just Janis at the start of her little-known Groucho Marx impersonation routine. If only it were a full video recording, rather than a snapshot ... then you'd see her losing another four inches in height (risky!) as she grouches ominously across the room.

But it's an even less well-known fact that it was THAT performance, in the depths of the Greenwich Village underground rather than up in the heights of that small NYC loft, which actually persuaded Shadow Morton to sign her up. Forget the "I set fire to his newspaper 'cos he wasn't paying attention" story. Be forever grateful to Groucho .......

Mike :) :D ;)

Thanks for the info on the photo everyone! Mike that's a very cool story. Yes a video clip would be wonderful though I suspect it doesn't exist or is nearly impossible to find. Has anyone actually seen Janis do her Groucho impersonation? Maybe we can get a repeat performance at the next Janismania. ;)
