View Full Version : Memories of first impressions of rudies met...

Randy & Betty in Pa

Well odds are, i'm guilty of something.. I'm rather proud of that actually

Ha!!!! A bit of non-Janis rudie history.... The first time I met REDJACK was in Pittsburgh on March 6th, 2006 at some little Irish Pub & Eatery... (Yes he was eating!!!!)
Betty and I entered the somewhat shadey pirate infested establishment and spotted the evil Cap'n sitting at the bar eating his drink with his fingers and snarfing down the kraut & mystery meat through a straw.... Well as many of you have seen REDJACK and I look almost like identical twins so without a word I wandered over and sat on the bar stool next to his.... The look on the bartenders face ws priceless, I think had I shuffled the food and drink in front of me he would have had no idea which of us was which.... But then hey the look on REDJACKs face was priceless when the bartender kept giving me his change... Pittsburgh, a city easy to get lost in unless you know the landmarks like mushroom clouds over hotels or its raining and one has a compass weiner in the back seat.... I must admit as much as I abuse REDJACK I do it with sincere friendship oh and because he deserves it.... What can I say... He was sooooooo REDJACKISH...

Someday I might confess to meeting the SAXMAN in Filthadelphia, Pa. on March 19th, 2006... Yea, so the snow had melted but it was only 30 degrees farenheit and he was wearing sandels...Well as many of you have seen Saxman and I look almost like identical twins??? Well thats another story, but we do have witnesses... Janis, Lonnye and the Saxman clan... HO HO HO..... Merry Christmas....

Good lord Betty and I could fill a book with the dirt we've gathered about sooooo many rudies, but ya know it's dirt we wouldn't change for the world...

Sooooooo anyone else with first last or other thoughts about meeting other rudies?

Best to you all

R. from the gooder side of Pa....

Ah, you should have been at Janismania, Randy. 40+ Rudies, most of whom had never met, all descending on an almost fully-staffed Catholic Girls' School. We'll never be the same, and neither will the nuns.

First time I met the other Dutch Rudies I was a bit shy. I don't think anybody noticed because I always have a big mouth.

First time I met Redjack I didn't recognise him right away. It took about three seconds. Then it turned out I like him just as much in real life as on the messageboard.

First time I met Randy PA I thought: "Yep, exactly as I imagined him". And Betty was real. That was a bit of a surprise.

First time I met Oak Kitten she made me laugh a lot. And we had lunch. Typical huh?

First time I met Manchester Anne I felt really welcome. What a sweet and fun woman.

First time I met DavidUK I wanted to cuddle him. And he spoke Hungarian! What a pleasant surprise.

First time I met SongDragon and Peppermint, I couldn't keep them apart. That lasted about half an hour I think.

First time I met Lucille and Wendy I believe they were eating. But I am not sure. I was a bit disctracted by Kath.

First time I met Kath of the guitar I wanted to stay around a bit. Could be the cute factor I guess :o

First time I met Mary she turned out to be just as funny as on the messageboard.

First time I met Elliott I thought: "Who is this strange man?" But he turned out to be very okay and he kept making compliments about my eyes. Please don't stop Elliott :)

First time I met Hoops we were in a limousine and she didn't recognise me. After me meeting the Penguin Hoops couldn't forget me.

First time I met the Penguin... well, you all know the story :o

The first time I met Kath, I grabbed her tail. And she knows what I mean by that.

Actually our first meeting quickly led to a big hug. And I hadn't even heard her play yet!

The first I thought I met Marjan, I was actually talking to Nancy Picconi. Later, I repeated the same mistake when actually talking to Marjan (no, I don't really see the resemblance either....now....).

As I recall, Marjan and I had a fine time prowling the halls of the Benedict Inn looting all remaining traces of Janismania. On spotting us, one of the nuns began desperately locking doors.

I have not yet met either Redjack or Randy....saving some things for my old age, I guess. Come to think of it, I don't seem to have met most of the people Eva has. Odd.

My first Rudie encounter was Marjan in Pittsburgh. I was arriving at the Candlewood Suites and I stepped out of the van from the airport and Marjan was standing outside the front door.

The next glimpse of a Rudie was Kath of the Guitar... I believe going to do some laundry... then I did some unpacking then came down to the lobby area to check out the facilities, as I passed by the laundry room I saw her sitting on top of the washing machine (not sure if it was going through the spin cycle) but she seemed to have a grin on her face. And that was it, I think, until the next morning, I retired to my room for a little nap.

first rudie encounter was march 9th 2006 in pitts I had driven 9 hours to meet these people and i had no idea what any of them looked like. I walked into the hotel and saw a red hair lady in the corner of the lobby. I walked toward her and i was about to say Hi Irish Beth when she said "you're a rudie, Irish Beth" . what a sweet, fun wonderful lady. we had many laughes over the next several hours. it seemed that everyone i met at the hotel was a rudie. there were thre hovered around the computer in the lobby, signed on to the message board giving liv updates of rudie meetings. i decided after meeting Irish Beth that i would start with anyone i met with my hand outstreched and "Hi, I'm hoops" on my tongue. one after another after another. sister rose, Redjack and later wife kathy, PK Owen, Randy and Betty, eventually diverboy and many more. there were about 18 of us there i believe. i wish i could remember all the names. there was the nice walk from the hotel to club cafe and the beautiful BMW that had my name on it... if there weren't so many witnesses i would have taken it for a ride, like sister rose and i had done with the rudie tour van earlier. then there was the wait at the door, standing next to the cigar shop with dozens of bra's hanging from th ceiling. the most incredible show i have ever seen. meeting my idol after the show! walking out of thee club and seeing Janis again as she got into the tour van and gave all of us rudies a hearty goodnight. back to the hotel, talking for hours with kathy. then to my room, which sister rose so generously shared with me and wouldn't let me give her a dime. she will always be my sister. every meeting with a rudie is a good meeting, and i look forwardf to many more

Oh, my! My very first Rudie encounter was our lovely Beth. We met for lunch on a February afternoon at Panera Bread after I realized that JanisMania (not yet named at that point) was going to be in Beech Grove, IN. I offered to help, and the rest is Rudie history. I was taken with her quiet confidence, and in awe of her boundless energy.

A couple of weeks later (Feb. 28), Janis was playing in Hamilton, OH, where I met Marcia, Bat, and Verlann. Also there were some of Beth and Verlann's relatives, but I forget their names. After the concert, we ended up at a terrific pizza place where we got to know each other, and they all sang an official Leap Year Happy Birthday to me after midnight. All the while, the staff glared at us, wanting us to leave!

JanisMania came as a whirlwind of introductions to people I never knew would become so important to me. sigh...it's where I slipped some cookies into the hand of my Rudiewife-to-be...sigh... ;)

We've had some fabulous times, my Rudie friends and I! And I'm sure there are many more yet to be!

I've only ever met NinasSpaceChild...oh but what a pleasant surprise. We had a wonderful lunch, and then I let Dylan and Roger get on with what they came to Edinburgh to do (eg go and see Leonard Cohen at the Castle) after looking in at the Advocates for Animals office. I don't anticipate it will be long before I meet someone else, but you never know on THIS message board!

Of course meeting Janis in April 2006 was the most fantastic experience in the world, and although I was nervous as a kitten, I really want a repeat performance of that one :)

Damn dude.. thats smooooooooooooooooooooooth :) I gotta take some pointers from you on flattery!

Meeting RandyPa for the first time was an experience.. I'll leave it at that. Betty was far easier on both the eyes and the ears!

Lady Di and Kat we were supposed to meet for eats prior to one of the Club Cafe events, but missed them at the eatery.. Turns out they had been sitting behind us the whole time.

Karen, was every bit as i expected, warm, funny, and a total hoot to be with. RandyVA was at one of the Club Cafe events, and all i could think was . who is that cooool dude in the corner in classic Johnny Cash black. Dar appeared with food in hand.. imagine that.. Anna from Dublin was there and quite charming .. I believe Beth and Verlann were also at that Club Cafe event and were absolutely delightful to chat with.

Now, Sister Rose, while wonderful to talk with scared the beejesus out of me with a car ride to pick up batteries for her camera. I shoulda listened to Hoops warning about her driving. The sidewalks have never been the same round here.

Diverboy lived up to his reputation by winding up in West Virginia instead of Pittsburgh ....

Those are the more memorable memories, though I'm sure i'll think of more

He is good eh? I enjoy it a lot. Flattery gets people far I think. Well, with me at least...

Meeting DragonLady and Changeling was very nice. They were so kind to me. And we spent dinner on an evening and then ended up talking for hours and hours. Lovely.

Karen is so funny. She was bubbly all the time. I thought she did a great job as auctioneer. Also because she knew just to say the right things at the right moment. I am not enthousiastic about her footwear. Except for the Mickey Mouse bead, that is.

Meeting Mimi was great. Hey, I love a gal who speaks German ;) She is so kind and generous. Mimi, Agnes and Marjan were on my birthday. I had a lovely day and my Rudiefriends being there was one more thing to be happy about that day. And they seemed to mix well with the family, the pervs and the general crowd. And the other way around.

Er...before you go throwing bouquets at Elliott for his charming words, I would like to point out a slight bit of errata here;
Elliott, when referring to Eva's wonderfully Azure Eyes, I do hope you meant to say 'Limpid', which means, (according to the Free Dictionary), "Characterized by transparent clearness; pellucid."
NOT, 'Lipid', (unless you really meant to call Eva 'oily' eyed...say not so!!!)

If you get really good at meeting and greeting and traveling and eating and al the other stuff, you get to have a RudieSpouse. So far as I know, only Karen and Dar have reached this level. But there must be some hope for the rest of us.

Bat you stand out in a crowd hanging from the rafters... Still I look in my mirror in the mornings annd usually wonder who the hell that is... Yes, like you I'm amazed that Janis can spot a rudie from a long way off and call out by name... Still when it's mine or Betty's name it sure makes us smile...

"If you get really good at meeting and greeting and traveling and eating and al the other stuff, you get to have a RudieSpouse. So far as I know, only Karen and Dar have reached this level"....

Dave I'd have to say that We've seen actually quite a few rudies with racked up miles from chasing Janis on tour... Hoops, Amy, Bat & our resident drummer, Roady, Mary, Marjan, BGG & Peanut, MARJAN, Betty and I and sooooo many others..... Now if I could just teach rudies that White Castles are a great food group....

Betty and I have seen Janis perform in (3X)New Jersey, (9X)Pa, (1X)Virginia, (1X)New York, (1X)Illinois, (2X)Wisconsin, (1X)Conneticutt & (1X)New Hampshire (1X) Iowa (1X)St. Louis, Mo.... And at every concert at least two or more rudies were there from the board... and in some cases as many as 30 or 40... Not to mention booksignings and the picnic....

Yup it's pretty amazing to be recognized by Janis when she is seeing 300 to 1000 people 4 nights a week in different places... To that all I can say is Thank you Janis...

Then of course there was June 24th, 2006... Betty and I drove the 2+ hours up into the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania...Arriving in Honesdale the entire town was alive with the first Annual ROOTS & RHYTHM FESTIVAL.... Well finding a parking spot, one of very few we wandered down the street to the place where we were to meet. There she stood wearing a lime green event t-shirt... Ducking into a store front I dialed my cell phone and seconds later I heard the ringing of a cell phone just a few feet away... "Leslie this is Randy..." I said.... Leslie stood there with her foot in a cast.... "Randy, are you and Betty coming up here today?" she asked... I responded in a manner fit for a true REDJACKIAN response.... "I'm not certain Leslie, after all they probably have you standing out in some kind of lime green event shirt with a tree on it" (Pretty much describing the shirt she had on... Well Leslie got this puzzled look on her face then started looking suspiciously around until she spotted us.... Then laughed and jumped up and hung up on me... Yes I was hung up on by a rudie ...
That was another wonderful adventure in the meeting of a rudie... Well Betty and I attended the first and second ROOTS & RYHTHM FESTIVALS and had a wonderful time at both and planned on attending the 3rd to see a very special featured artist... KATH OF GUITAR, ....but alas the fates had other plans for us as we ended up attending the video taping of JANIS IAN LIVE FROM GRAND CENTER in St. Louis.... That said we do plan on attending the 4th ROOTS & RYHTHM FESTIVAL in Honesdale Pa. unless of course something hugely important conflicts with that date.... These are great rudie events!!!! At the second one we encountered Lucille (Wendy) the fire cooking Australian and the oh so MODEST KATH & The non-pyro Lucille from Florida....If your in the region this is a growing festival well worth attending... More so every year...In a very beautiful and historic place...!!!!!!!

Leslie, Pat, good health and best wishes to you both.....

Best to you all
