View Full Version : Do you know about this? H.R. 4040

I just found out about this yesterday. I may lose my sewing job because of this legislation. It's about lead in consumer products geared to children age 12 and under. Evidently, it involves anything children use/play with/touch. As you will see in this article, the cost is prohibitive for the small businessperson. I think someone took a good idea and made it into a monster. We are all for the safety of children, but for heaven's sake, how about some common sense?? Oh, that's right. This involves the US government...

This sounds like somebody's "good idea" which turned into a typical government effort. How might we verify whether it is accurate or not? And should it be, who can we gripe to in the hope of doing something about it (we can't hit them upside the heads, so griping will have to do).

For the moment, pardon me....I'm off to play lawn darts.

when I saw this. Karen, how on Earth could this concern your sewing business? Love, Elliott

Well, Elliott, the majority of the things I sew are for little girls. It seems that verification from the source is not sufficient, but that Angie (the owner of the business) would have to test each component of an outfit.

She said the someone went into Toys R Us and noticed that the shelves were nearly bare. Thinking it was due to Christmas, they asked when there would be more stock. The answer was that they weren't getting more in until all this is straightened out.

Dave, I think there are contacts at the end of the article.

Sheesh.. I grew up the first 11 years of my life in a house that had lead based paint and asbestos in the attic..

I agree, this and many other things have grown WAY out of proportion to the amount of risk involved.

As to common sense, remember Redjack's 231st Law... Politics are what happens when you run out of Common Sense.

Child Safety gone mad!!!! Just don't forget, Bush is still in power for the next 10 days so hopefully when Obama takes office he'll run down these inept and pointless laws. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Gotta make sure that 100% cotton is lead-free! It would be funny were it not for the potential impact this measure will have on business owners and independent contractors.

My house was built around 1925. So....it's got lead paint on the walls, asbestos insulation on some of the pipes, and who knows what else. But I'm still here. I also own pointed scissors and a Swiss Army Knife.

This explains so much. Did the people who wrote this legislation hang out with you?

When we establish Rudieland, there will be no regulations like this. The pirates will have real swords and the coconuts will be unpasteurized. We'll use whatever paint floats by and bring a drum of DDT for the mosquitoes. We'll burn tires and used oil for heat. And we'll play lawn darts and ride bicycles without helmets. Indoors, we'll play darts with real steel-tipped darts. And we'll all have BB guns and pointed scissors. I don't smoke, but I will personally sponsor a ban on filtered cigarettes.

And I'll bet we'll outlive the generation that is wearing life jackets in the bath tub.

We approach, I fear, a day when life may well be safe, but also unworthy of living.

Well, have one for me. I can't touch the stuff, but what does that have to do with anyone else?

Rudieland may require one additional rule, to the effect that self-proclaimed "moralists" may spew to their hearts content while inside a church, but shot on sight if they try to do the same thing in public.
