View Full Version : Portaits on album covers?

Mimi

Hi all,
I have a wall in my room decorated with framed 20X20 cm scans of my album covers of my favorite artists. Yesterday I added two and changed two others and realized that it kind of looks like a portait gallery.

So I wondered what your favorite portaits on album covers are? Let me know, I'm curious!

I have all the albums framed. Kind of sucks; once they are framed, how's she gonna sign them? I mean one night when Janis and Pat are in town and stop by for a single malt and a nosh. Thanks right Elliott, keep dreaming!:o

I'm very fond of the Up Till Now pic :) and equally fond of Julie Matthews' Slow cover. And then there's the picture on the back of the latest album by Chris While and Julie Matthews, Together Alone, of which the cover is very good too. How many am I allowed to list, Mimi? ;)

There are no limits, my friend! "Slow" (maybe by absolute favorite right now) and "Together Alone" are part of my gallery as well as Noel's favorite, Joni Mitchell's "Blue" and kd lang's cover of "Ingenue".

... and I'd love to add some more but I've run out of frames...

In that case I'll add the cover of R. Carlos Nakai's Canyon Trilogy, the artwork on Chris While's Rosella Red and the covers of the St Agnes Fountain (:D) album Soal Cake and Higher Potential by While & Matthews (and yes, I do have a weakness for empty shorelines and sunsets)

That's obvious from the album covers you named. I recommend Melissa Etheridge's "The Awakening" and Tracy Chapman's "Our Bright Future" then... ;)

The Awakening isn't a portrait so if we're speaking generally of favorite album covers one of my favorites is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.

Favourite Janis Ian album cover would be Revenge. It's a great photo and I really love that jacket!

Natalie Merchant - Motherland : I love the simplicity of this picture

Natalie Merchant - The House Carpenter's Daughter: Once again, the simplicity is what makes it a beautiful portrait.

Janis Ian - Between The Lines : One of my all-time favorite pics of Janis

Marianne Faithful - Faithful

These are just a few of my favorites....the albums are all pretty darn good as well.

This next one is "Maria Muldaur - Yes We Can!"
I like the cover for what it represents and really enjoy the music. Maria Muldaur - lead vocals and fiddle. Also showcases special guests Joan Baez, Odetta, Holly Near, Bonnie Rait, Phoebe Snow, and others. Also features "The Women's Voices for Peace Choir."

This next one is "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos - Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, and Duane Allman. This may be my all-time favorite cover for its artistic appeal.

I can't choose... There are many I like...
This one for instance. I bought that record in my teens. Never heard of the singer anymore by the way.

For non-Janis, non-photo covers, my favorites are the "groovy" album covers producers by Hypgnosis (sp?) for Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon" and several albums by The Alan Parsons Project (notably "Ammonia Avenue"--the cover is on some levels far more interesting than the contents).

Favorite album cover photo is actually the back cover of Judy Collins' "Colors Of The Day". Back when such things came on vinyl, a poster of the photo came with it--I still have mine.

Favorite Janis album cover: "Breaking Silence". Part portrait, part icon and hinting darkly at the music on the album, it's a lovely example of an album serving as art on more than one level.

I wanted hair like hers... I went to the hairdresser and looked like a poodle :o
Oh yes, and I liked the album. This was the most 'famous' one. Rosie Vela was a model.

Another albumcover I liked is Time from ELO. What can I say. I was a sucker for electronic music in the eighties and for SF/fantasy. Looks like a good combi.

Isao Tomita produced some interesting albums consisting mainly of electronic interpretations of classical music (far more elaborate than, say, "Switched-On Bach"). The covers for those are pretty neat, the music....well, you have to keep in mind while listening just how much effort was required to get music out of a synthesizer during the early 70s.

I'm sure elliott will concur that it is never a good idea to go to a hairdresser with a picture and say "I want to look like that" you will only be disappointed, not because the person in the photo is that pretty, but because you won't ever look like that...facial features and all that crap get in the way.
another fav album cover fleetwood mac rumors

Better to go to Great Clips and get one of their Russian Roulette haircuts....once in a while, it actually turns out to be what you wanted. And they have a guarantee. Which I've never figured out....I mean, they offer a 30 day guarantee, so....can I walk in there after 29 days and ask to return your haircut?

I really want to know about things like this. They keep me up nights.

The difference between a good and a bad haircut is two weeks....

:eek:When someone brings me a picture of hair they will never grow, I tell them that even that persons hair doesn't look like that... but I'll go wig shopping with them. There is a wig store only about a mile from my salon. I don't think I've ever seen a tv personality, man or woman, who did not have a wig or weave or some sort of hairpiece on their head. Also, a professional to make them look that natural. Remember, natural beauty only comes from within. I you don't believe that... please send me money so at least Buddy can eat!

I you don't believe that... please send me money so at least Buddy can eat!Elliott, I DO believe that natural beauty (the true beauty) comes only from within. You've got me worried about Buddy, however. I love dogs and used to have a Buddy of my own. Please feed him well! :)
