I keep seeing this "< 3" everywhere and have no clue what it is supposed to mean...am I too old or too much of a dork to understand the reference?

Yes, it's teen online lingo for "heart"

Could this also be classified as an "emoticon" perhaps?

This is the one I chose/fashioned for me 8-{)> It shows my glasses, nose, moustache, smile, and goatee.

In some typefaces, <3 actually does look like a heart. Some of the other Netspeak icons also vary a bit depending on which font you're using.

There is a semi-clever bubblegum song by "Becky" entitled "Less Than Three" which incorporates a bunch of Netspeak into some very speedy more or less audible lyrics. I think YouTube has a subtitled version. "Less than three, OMG, meet with me on IRC...."

OR,... turn it upside down to become an evil set of eyebrows. }8-{)>
Of course that would have to be accompanied by the mandatory "mu-ah-ah-ah-aaaahhhhh".

Guess those could be horns too, which would be fitting in my case. :D
