Want to spend the next 12 months with Sarah Palin? Apparently many people do, as the 2009 Sarah Palin calendar is currently the number one selling "office product" on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/JudyPatrick-Photography-Sarah-Palin-Calendar/dp/B001HWKAVE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1230339596&sr=8-2). CNN notes (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/12/26/calendar-offers-chance-to-spend-2009-with-sarah-palin/) that the calendar was made by Former Wasilla Deputy Mayor Judy Patrick.
Check it out here (http://www.amazon.com/JudyPatrick-Photography-Sarah-Palin-Calendar/dp/B001HWKAVE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1230339596&sr=8-2).

Oh, P.T. Barnum, your time has truly come around.
And I swear that H.L. Mencken must be trying to get out of the ground and get his hands on a typewriter.

I think it's true what they say - good-looking people tend to get preferential treatment in this world, regardless of other attributes or the lack thereof.
Anyway, what he said:
BREAK = GIMME.

Who in the H-E Double Hockey Sticks decided Sarah Palin was attractive?
Well, I think she is okay looking. Not my type but that's not the point. Plus she got far in politics. So they make calendars of her. Sounds kind of logical to me.
Eva
I was wondering the same thing Dave.
I'd much rather have one of these. :p

Wow... you guys hate her this much? So you don't vote for her. I think that's the end of it then, no? Maybe I am being too Dutch for this...
Eva
Hate? Nah. I just can’t stand the sight of that washed-up-gun-toting-caribou-killing-screeching-cheerleader-harpy and I had successfully botted her from my mind till she popped up here again.
Guess I'll be needing this again.

Eva...the true horror is that most opticians are still sold out of those awful glasses she wears. And they're popping up everywhere, on otherwise attractive faces....

In -my- opinion the fact that she is or isn't attractive is not the point. The point that gets -my- goat is that this is the best selling "office" item on Amazon at the moment. As a former "office official" I can say that in my mind creating a productive "office" environment has absolutely -nothing- to do with whatever is or isn't on the calendar on the wall besides scheduled appointments, meetings, processes, procedures etc. One of the best calendars I ever had (or have) in my office is one that doesn't detract or distract from the immediate tasks and I think that having Sarah Palin staring over my shoulder all the time (even if only from a calendar) could prove to be distracting and thereby deterring all workers from pristine performance.

I have a calendar with recipes on it.....
I much prefer my calendar to have pictures of places of natural beauty... mountains, rivers, forests, or the sea. Marcia has gotten me some beauties over the years, and I always look forward to my annual Christmas calendar!
I made my parents a 2009 calendar with pictures on it from their childhood and gave it to them for christmas. They liked it a lot. I had no money to really buy them anything. And I have no idea what to buy them anyway. But this was an emotional thing which just struck the right chord. Cool.
Eva
Eva, it's never about the money where parents and true friends are concerned...it's about the thoughts behind the gift, the knowing a person well enough to know what is perfect for them. I think your calendar gift to your parents showed a lot of caring and effort to please them with something meaningful...excellently done!

Eva,
in my humble opinion, Sarah Palin "made it" under false pretenses and desrves no extra celebration and should go off into the night never to be seen on the national level again. she made us look bad, whether we were for her or against her and that is why i call her the one whose name shall not be spoken. I don't hate her, i don't even dislike her, i feel nothing except that she needs to go away.

I like that, Hoops....perhaps we need to create a mythos, something like that of "Those We Don't Speak Of" in the movie "The Village". Which as I recall also had "The Old Shed Which Is Never To Be Used" and some other places with great names. All of which should be great storage sports for She Of Whom We Shall Not Speak.
("The Village" also includes that lovely line: "don't be afraid....it is only farce..." ah, if only we could be sure.)

Before my mom developed dementia she used to give each of us kids a calendar for Christmas every year with all of the family's (extended included, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) birthdays anniversaries etc written in it so we would wouldn't forget anyone throughout the year. It was very thoughtful...I do miss it now that I don't get one every year. If I could remember everyone's birthday, I'd do it for her now that she can't remember everyone's name.

Then there was the old British TV show (forgot the name, of course) where the man referred to his wife as "She Who Must Be Obeyed." I'll never forget it. ;)
I had a collegue and he used to refer to his wife as: The Ministry Of War.
Well, it's better than The Ministry Of Silly Walks... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpcqbbrfuzM&feature=PlayList&p=05703E7B049C4FB5&playnext=1&index=43

I seem to remember someone telling me it was from a show called Rumpole of the Bailey... never have seen the show though.
I have a very large mug at work that has that on the side of it, too! It has a prominent spot on my desk!!
Yep, I'll never forget good ol' whatshername!!

Rumpole was a delight, played by Leo McKern, who also had a couple of great guest parts in "The Prisoner", another bit of film/tv nostalgia that is great study if you want to pick up a few oddball phrases to use around people who will think you are a bit "off" as a result.
Two friends and I, after watching "The Village" (the name of the location for "The Prisoner", perhaps not coincidentally), went around talking to each other in "Village-speak" for some days afterward, referring to "the street on which the car is not parked" and "the door which is no longer opened", among other things. Had a grand old time.
We especially had fun with my housemate, who we designated "she of whom we do not speak". Not to her face, of course, as that would not have been any fun.

Mary, that's the very one. I figured someone here would come up with it. As DaveM might attest, it was a very funny show. I think you'd like it. ;)

That's good, Hoops....it probably means you are more sane than you believe. Now, I didn't mention much in the way of details about that friend, did I? I think I'll keep it that way.
For the time being I have given up the girlfriend business and left it in the hands of those who are more accomplished at it (with a bow to the ladies here). Perhaps some of you can give me lessons one day and I'll get back into the fray when I've learned how to do it properly.
Until then, I am quite content being "honorary".
Poor thing... Dave, I can't help you either. I am single for almost 12 years now. I am starting to think it has a reason...
