Hoops. Almost any Jewish woman?! That one made me laugh although I would have to say I would fall under the category of almost. I don't think I am especially funny. ;)

Billy Connolly cracks me up, every time, ever since he told a story on UK TV in the 70's about how a man killed his wife and burried her in the garden but left her butt sticking out the ground so he had somewhere to park his bike!!

I love the movie "Airplane" and can dictate almost every scene now (except for the jive (sp?) perhaps).

I also love "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" tough I also like the other Monty Python pieces (bought the tapes for Dad, and always love the 'dead parrot' scene).

drummergirl,
what do you mean, you are a gas!!!! a laugh riot. and please forgive me if i seem to be stereotyping, it just seems that I and by that i mean me myself, seem to see more Jewish women than women of any other distiction choosing to be comics. Women in general have a lot of material to work with.
oh and i forgot to mention i like most lesbian comics too. I forget her name but she is a very thin very pretty woman and she does about 1/4 of her show without saying a thing about being gay. then she mentions it and the crowd grows quiet and she rolls all kinds of possiblities off of their silence, she is hilarious, and cute :)

Hey hoops, was she Elvira Kurt?

Strange when you think about it, but a few years ago, a gay, jewish woman comedienne getting on stage would simply have been laughed at.

PeteCC

PS A favourite of mine would be Mike Harding, (see posts about Janis on the Beeb), he used to do stand up routines a while back.

(Oh, and I do realise that 'woman comedienne' is a little tautological.)

Hoops, let us know if you figure out who that comedienne is. Not sure I have seen her before. There is another really funny lesbian (not Jewish) comic named Vicki Shaw. Have you seen her? She is a laugh riot. Me personally, I don't know. I wonder if Bat thinks I am funny. Well perhaps.....never mind!!

Well, I found this thread amongst the archives so here's some of my favorite comics:

Lily Tomlin
Red Skelton
Danny Kaye (Thanks, Bat, for reminding me...When I was a kid I was so fascinated by him.)
Victor Borga
Elvira Kurt
Margaret Cho
Josh Blue
Michelle Balan
Carol Burnett
George Lopez
Ellen DeGenerese
Loungezilla
Vicki Shaw
George Carlin
Kate Clinton (how could I have forgotten her)
Monty Python (forgot them, too ... that's what I get for doing this list while tired)

and yes, Janis... true, not a comic, but she has a wonderful sense of humor.

Definitely Kate Clinton

Lisa Koch - the master of "I'm changing the lyrics to make 'em hilarious"

I've never heard of her before... so checked out her site, clever songs...

Janis doesn't make her living being a comic, but she has the words, the delivery, the smarts, the angst, and the timing to be a great one!...in fact, "Married in Canada" is pretty danged funny, and "The Crocodile Song" is a prime example of off-the-wall humor...and can't forget "My Autobiography" for cleverness in the extreme!

Yep, Janis, your next career awaits you!;)

I can't resist the Pythons, along with their occasional musical sidekick, Neil Innes. If you haven't seen "The Rutles", with Innes appearing as a virtual clone of John Lennon and about half of the Python bunch appearing in various roles (along with George Harrison in a small part), put it on your must-see list. More subtle and cerebral than "This Is Spinal Tap", it may be the best parody of The Beatles ever attempted.

I've always loved silly music, and so must include the Spinal Tap guys as well. They made an album as Lenny and the Squigtones some time before Spinal Tap (probably impossible to find now, alas), and recreated themselves as The Folksmen for Christopher Guest's "A Mighty Wind". My understanding is that The Folksmen often open Spinal Tap concerts, usually getting booed off the stage only to return as their other alter egos.

If you've ever heard The National Lampoon's "Deteriorata" (1972), at least two of the Spinal Tap crew were in on that as well. Have often wondered if they recorded anything else back then.

George Carlin
Richard Pryor
Monty Python (BBC Show, ...Holy Grail, and The Meaning of Life)

For me, though, it all starts with and is based on Groucho Marx. I think he was the first controversial comedian who also used satire and sarcasm effectively. You can watch some Marx Bros. films now and just imagine how some peoples feathers must have been ruffled by them back then. I think the Python boys perfected "silly humor", but again, many of their skits just reminded me of more "hip" versions of Marx Bros. scenarios.

Three Stooges
Laurel and Hardy
Marx Brothers
W.C. Fields
Mae West
Danny Kaye
Zero Mostel
Lilly Tomlin
Rita Rudner
Paula Poundstone
Wanda Sykes

Woody Allen always creeped me out, even before he married his adopted daughter. Yuck.

I never liked Woody Allen, either, Oak...something about him just was NOT funny. To me, anyway.
Danny Kaye was always my favorite, followed closely by Red Skelton, especially doing Klem Kadiddlehopper...as a kid, he turned me inside out laughing. And that was on Radio. When I saw him on live TV later, he was even more delightful...I didn't have the slightest idea what he looked like til then.
Danny Kaye was a master of doubletalk and pig latin...entrancing idiocy!

As a kid, I loved Fibber McGee, and Fred Allen, Jack Benny, and "The Great Gildersleeve" always got lots of giggles...great writers.
Now I like Rita Rudner and Kate Clinton, and Lily Tomlin. And Ellen!

Was this before or after The Great Depression? (WFF ducks to avoid lightning bolt);) I actually am familiar with Red Skelton, but "Flibber-de-gibbitz" and "Grand Gunter-slaw" I'm not...:D

I love comedians!! So do my daughters. Allison wants to be a "cover comedian!" Says she can't come up with her own material, but she can quote a good many!

My favorites list is a long one!
Ellen
Jim Gaffigan
Red Skelton
Smothers Brothers
Bill Cosby
Margaret Cho
Mitch Hedberg
Joe Koi
Lily Tomlin

I'm sure I've left out some.
