I am a geek and have just read a book "The Blue Nowhere" by Jeffrey Deaver that I found fascinating. A great mystery that has its villian (Phate - cracker) and hero (Wyatt - hacker who works with the CCU - Computer Crimes Unit) squaring off in cyberspace.
Great title... Blue = electricity & Nowhere = that place where the information is.
Phate, one of the best, has created a program that can enter anyone's computer without their knowing. He finds out all about them thru reading files, emails, etc... Living out a MUD (multi-user dimension) game, he "socially engineers" his victims and kills them. He has blurred the line between reality and the machine world.
Conflicts on a new battlefield. Great strategies to takeover 'root' access of the most protected computer systems. Deaver does a good job of explaining most terms to 'lay' people but I think it's more suited for those with some technical knowledge.
