Obama’s Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy
Posted on Nov 24, 2008

By Andy Borowitz

In the first two weeks after the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the last eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.

Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama’s appearance on CBS’s “Sixty Minutes” last Sunday witnessed the president-elect’s unorthodox verbal tic, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.

But Mr. Obama’s decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.

According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it “alienating” to have a president who speaks English as if it were his first language.

“Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement,” says Mr. Logsdon. “If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist.”

The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, “OK, subject, predicate, subject, predicate—we get it, stop showing off.”

The president-elect’s stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

“Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can’t really do there, I think needing to do that isn’t tapping into what Americans are needing also,” she said.

Award-winning humorist, television personality and film actor Andy Borowitz is author of the book “The Republican Playbook.”

This may well explain why the more slack-jawed "conservative" faction believed Mr. Obama was not an American citizen.

And of course, if we'd had people like that back in 1776, we'd all be speaking English now.

one possible unwanted response is that people are so ingrained with hearing non sentences and shortened pointless phrases that they might stop listening after the 5th or 6th word, just because it's unexpected

Eva, while it is just a joke, if you listen to speeches made by the president of the last 8 years and others like the recent vp candidate ( who shall not be named ) you'll find it too true to be overlooked.

Eva, if you think this is a joke, go to eBay and look up "Sarah Palin Action Figure" or "Sarah Palin Bobblehead". This is America, after all.

Or you can go to http://cgi.ebay.com/BARACK-OBAMA-TALKING-BOBBLEHEAD-TOY-CAPTAIN-OBAMA_W0QQitemZ260321733822QQihZ016QQcategoryZ348Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and have the chance to bid on your very own "Captain Obama" talking bobblehead.

H.L. Mencken....thou shoulds't be living.

Anything that speaks to Bush being an illiterate butthead can't be joke because it’s true. Sarah Palin is a an unfunny joke and an aberration. I don’t know why I am still seeing either of them on my TV but I wish somebody would make it would stop!

Dee....given the state of political consciousness in this country (the results of the last election notwithstanding), I would not be at all surprised to see a Sarah Palin/Paris Hilton ticket during the next campaign. Palin will answer every question with: "if the Lord wills it" and Hilton, of course, will reply to every question with: "that's hot".

The last is, at least, a complete sentence.

Yes, I was trying to be kind. At this point I’m quite sure the entire world economy is livid with that idiot.

Why doesn’t somebody go after his offshore savings accounts? I bet there are oodles of war profit dollars hiding in those.

Dee, how could Palin-Hilton possibly be worse than The Current Occupant? Sen. Obama hasn't taken office yet and he's already improving the image of the United States!

Even if he proves to be a mediocre President, the relief of no longer having to put up with that whiny little Texas gnat hovering around our ears is likely to make the next four years glorious by comparison.

Not to mention the evil Cheney. One thing I'll miss (sort of) is Great Moments in Presidential Speeches on Letterman.

Yes Dave, it's refreshing to listen to someone who doesn't speak gibberish for a change. And he’s also a lot easier on the eyes.

When I see that other buffoon appear on my TV I can't change the channel fast enough!
