Hi everyone,
I noticed there are two versions of Days Like These, both of which are excellent - the piano version which is on God & the FBI and featured in Dawson's Creek and a more upbeat guitar-led version with a load of talking at the start. Is this from a movie soundtrack or something?
Which came first and why was it re-recorded, if anyone knows?
Thanks,
Alex (UK)
Welcome to the forums Alex. I’m not sure about the answers to your questions but someone who is might chime in at some point.
Care to tell us a little bit about yourself? Have you been a fan for a long time?

Hi Alex.
Great question:cool:
I'm also interested in hearing about other movie sound tracks that feature Janis?

The one from a movie sondtrack is from John Mellencamp's film Falling From Grace. Janis re-recorded it for her own album later. Kathleen Brogan or Mike UK will have more details that I can't remember off the top of my head right now.

I love "Days Like These" in all its forms, but the Falling from Grace version is wonderful and therefore my favourite. :) I don't know anything else about it... sorry.

I wish I knew about the "story" behind this song. I tried to discover more while researching "A Few Old Friends", but didn't get much beyond the movie!
But for the record, the song was copyrighted in 1992. It appears on three Janis CDs:
- god and the fbi (released 2000)
- Janis Ian Live: Working Without A Net ... recorded live in 2002 in Rochester, NY
- Best of Janis Ian (The Autobiography Collection) ... re-recorded in 2008

I don't know whether the soundtrack version is the same as the God & The FBI one, but the CD for the soundtrack is widely available very cheaply. I've just ordered it. OK, so I am a completist - but not in the same league as Kathleen and Mike.

Welcome to the board Alex,
kick your shoes off, relax your mind...
Check out chapter 17, "Days Like These" in Society's Child my autobiography for some insight on the story behind the song; not the various recordings but the writing.

I think the song was used in the HBO show "Oz". Seems like one of the characters was singing it. I love the song.

I like this version of To The River better than JM's Days Like These. He wrote one verse himself and got a co-write credit on his version (River).
My favorite version of Days Like These, is the one Janis sang for the sondtrack of Falling Form Grace.
I probably like it more as it was the first new recording I had heard by Janis in a long time, and by the way the movie ai'nt that bad either:}
It was used in the HBO series OZ, don't remember which season, but if memory serves me correct, Rita Moreno sang that particular version.
if you can get the soundtrack, I definetely recommend it as it's got some wonderful songs(Country-ish), and Mellencamps version of To The river is actually quite good.

The CD of Falling from Grace arrived today. I like the version of Days Like These and the rest of the CD seems good too.
