When i listen to Janis LPs [ That would be every day ] when a song is ending or ended i anticipate the silence between takes and not sure if its because im a musician and are use to the next Down beat or others can enjoy for the lack of a better word , Enjoy and can anticipate the next song and come in on tune and know exactly when the song starts , I enjoy the silence knowing when the necxt down beat is . and know what song is next
i cant tell you what order the songs are in untill i hear the silence between takes .
anyone else hear the silence the way i do ? just wondering

Yes, Mike. I see exactly what you mean. Isn't it a shame that we're all into CDs now. They don't have quite the same sort of silence between the songs, do they.

Mike, Mike, Mike...
Such complexities we live with...I have to admit I've rarely given thought to such things though during the silence between cuts I find that all of that silence bangs back and forth between my ears.... Then come the ECHOS...(ECHOs...ECHos...EChos...Echos...echooooos sssssss...)... Still on a truely great album even the silence can enhance the sound and the artists performance.... So anyway am I making any sense???? I don't know and actually it don't matter other then we are getting ready to go seen Janis on the 14th, 15th and 20th of this month and ya know... With Betty feeling somewhat better (though still a bit on the weak side) I can't help but smile... Sooooo all things considered, without the silence between the cuts how could I tell where one song ends and the next begins???? And here you thought I used to be befuddled... Hell you should see me now... But Mike it's a happy befuddlement...:o
Best to you and Lonnye and the gang... Oh... and Mike we miss you!

Perfectly put, Gisli.... that's what I think, too.

contemplation, even more than that, acceptance, fullfilment, it's like the song is growing creating a new part of my brain just for that song...in that silence. it is a beautiful, peaceful, and sometimes challenging place, it is full of abundance. for such a short silent period of time, it is incredibly full. i love it

I've been converting my record albums to mp3s and I really enjoy leaving the silence any pops and hisses of the albums in the mp3. It makes me feel like I'm listening to a record on a phonograph even if the music is coming through headphones from my iPod.

it doesent matter if its LPs CDS or any other type of recording , the silence is powerfull part of the overall Theme to me . Silence in anticipation Thanks for the feedback as always , Mike
As a person with 1500 LP's remaining from a larger collection (I've given away those which I replaced with cd version), I am among those of us who yearn for the days of the album cover, we could read, or look at the artistry.......and your invoking the silence is yet another part of that special experience.
However, I do enjoy the sound of the cd, and there are albums that would be classics for me if not for a song 3 on the lst side that is horrible, and I would either have to endure it, or lift the needle........Synchronicity comes to mind, there is a song on side 1 which forced me to listen ONLY to side 2, classic already because of the songs on that side.
Which long ago got me to thinking that I miss side 1 and side 2........what I thought would be kool would be for albums, esp. those that are cd versions of LP's, not brand new albums, having a 15 second silence between the last song of side 1 and the first song of side 2. It was like Act I and Act II, the flipping over of one side to the other was like intermission.
I don't think anyone in corporate/record industry would care much for my idea :)..........
It could be done if you burn an album, a cd, and have the wherewithall to leave 15 seconds, for all intents and purposes, making your own album ;)

Not long ago I made a CD compilation which commenced with the sound of a record changer starting up, dropping a vinyl record, and the needle lowering into the record groove. Didn't think to put appropriate sound clips between tracks, though they are available!

It's so funny to read this, because a friend of mine, is who is music mad (like myself), have both been complaining about missing vinyl. For me the benefits of CD clarity just don't compare with the entire ritual - purchasing the record, taking the plastic off, examining the album cover and inner sleeve for all the relevant pieces of information (it was important to even examine the bar code) - sadly CD just doesn't do it.
I miss the faint scratching as the needle was placed on the record and then the music would start.... incidentally I was about 16 when vinyl started getting phased out here in South Africa.
Yes Mike. I like that silence too.

It's the space in between the bars, that hold the tiger together.
I love it too Mike!
Gisli, you warm my heart.;)
And that is exactly why they put rests in music, and sometimes, even, a Grand Pause! A good composer knows when a bit of silence is golden.
Brandon! Good to see you posting!
I was never a big fan of vinyl, but I think I know what you mean, Mike.

It is the sound of one hand clapping...the same sound that a tree makes when it falls in the woods and no one is there to hear.

I have a cd that doesn't have enough silence between tracks and I find it very confusing. Can't quite tell when one track ends and the next begins.
