This question always gives me brain cramps. Today I’d pick “Getting Over You.” Tomorrow? That’s impossible to say.

"Light A Light"--I heard it long before I even knew Janis had recorded it and fell in love with it at once. For sheer sincere simplicity, I can't think of anything finer.

don't mean to be a spoil sport, but 'best' songs can be done, if ever, with people with a few to choose from; Janis, and Dylan, and Jimmy Webb, and Paul Simon, and on and on, the Hall of Fame talents of our time, picking one song is impossible, as impossible as saying who is your favorite singer.........your favorite group..........
I'll return if you modify it to top 10........even then, but that's reasonable, or more reasonable............again, no disrespect intended.

I ticked Tattoo as it's my favourite from the list, but as others have said, with such a rich back catalogue as Janis's it can change every hour.

I voted for Love is Blind but I also agree with Karen on She Must Be Beautiful. There is NO WAY I could EVER choose just one!!

I voted for Silly Habits because it is my favorite of the ones listed, but I couldn't really limit it to one and if I'm being totally honest it should have been 17 as that was the song that brought me to Janis, but my instinct not to be predictable means I always avoid the obvious choice! I guess that's a trait throughout Rudie-land since poor Society's Child and 17 haven't got a single vote yet!

Bigger than Real got me going. In the Winter took over! :) Now I love everything. To be honest, I don't think this poll does much justice to Janis's phenomenal talent, as it doesn't list all the songs....it can't. Bob NC I thank you for the opportunity to give my opinion.

I'll always love 'From Me to You'. More recently, it's 'Welcome to Acousticville'. I aspire to be able to play it on the guitar, and love the humor.

I did watch Live from Club Cafe last evening -- so many great songs performed.

Janis has written so many songs that it's just not possible to pick one favorite. Heck, I can't even pick one favorite album! What appeals on one day may be overshadowed by a song that resonates with what I am feeling now.

Well, BobNC, you have hundreds of songs to check out. Enjoy!
and be sure to add to your JI collection during the holiday sale.

One of my favourites is;

"Here comes the night"

Touch in the tenderest night,
Before the feelings take flight.
Touch and you make everything new,
Everything bright, shiny and true.
Before the dawn and the light,
Here comes the night.

Here in the heart, I still breathe,
Longing a part of me I can't see.
And if the heart cannot redeem,
One soul apart, one separate dream.
Before the dawn and the light,
Here comes the night.

Here we are waiting (waiting),
And longing (longing),
Crying out, I am more than just a man,
Building castles in the sand.
All of us needing and leaving,
Long before the break of day.
So little time to say,
Well, I am, I know the way.
And I wanna be somebody who can see forever.
Wanna be somebody who can see forever.

Here in the heart I still dream.
Here in the heart of life I seem,
Somebody light, (somebody),
Somebody new, (somebody),
Somebody bright, (who can see),
Shiny and true.

(Somebody light,) wanna be,
(Somebody new,) somebody,
(Somebody bright,) who can see,
(Shiny and true,) forever.

(Somebody light,) wanna be,
(Somebody new,) somebody,
(Somebody bright,) who can see,
(Shiny and true,) forever.

Before the dawn and the light,
Here comes the night.
Before the dawn and the light,
Here comes the night.

Just finished watching disk 1 of Janismania and couldn't believe any many of her classics Janis confessed to not really remembering all of the lyrics/chords... glad she did make it through "Light a Light." "Roses" would have been nice to hear.

Saving disk 2 for Thursday -- hope I get to hear "Watercolors" and/or "Lover's Lulabye"

Where was Janismania held?

Tomorrow is Armistice Day (or Remembrance Day) in Europe, when we remember the dead of World War 1, and of all wars. I don't know whether the same day is set aside in America, but at the moment the most important Janis Ian song has to be Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye, which she didn't write but performs, unaccompanied, better than anybody else I have ever heard.

I voted officially for At Seventeen because it was my first favorite of Janis', and I still love it alot, but "favorite" is really mood dependent - I have to say Welcome to Acousticville is my favorite when I'm in the mood for Bold and Bluesy.

Mel...can I call you mel? You're the first, besides me, to mention Welcome to Acousticville. I just got home after a 1 hour drive from work listening to that song much of the way, and I've always loved it. It's also my biggest challenge to learn on the guitar but I'm working on it piece by piece. It really shows Janis' amazing guitar playing, not to mention her humor.

Your question makes me smile - this is proof that we mellow with age, in that in my youth and lots of my adulthood I would NEVER answer to Mel, but I don't mind it anymore! At least not in cyber-conversation I don't. Call me what you will!
I think it's cool that you are challenging yourself with that song - what an incredible feeling it will be when you master it! I agree that song is the ultimate sample of Janis' humor and storytelling ability mediated thru her musical genius.
