Hi all, this maybe a question for the real experts. Does anyone know anything about this item I just ordered on amazon uk marketplace?

Old Grey Whistle Test 1976 [Audio CD] Ian, Janis

Am I right that the Old Grey Whistle is a venue, maybe in the UK or Ireland as I found this recording somehow related to the BBC?

Mimi

Hi Mimi

The Old Grey Whistle Test was a late night tv programme of live music- they attracted very big names in the day.

I think the CD you are referring to is a compilation of performances. I know there was a series of dvds released a couple of years ago, one of which featured Janis performing At Seventeen- maybe that is the performance which is on the CD? It won't be an album of just Janis- I'm almost certain it's one or two tracks on a compilation.

actually Mimi- it could be just Janis- look at this link and go two thirds down the page to Live On The Test......

I hope so for you.

I wonder if it's official?

Thanks, David and Marcia, so did I get this right that The Old Grey Whistle Test is the same as Live on the Test (which I have)?

Mimi, still

ah, that's a good question....

I take it to be the same, but if it is you could always give it to another rudie :)

Just browsed our very own forum's archives and found a thread started on February 7, 2006.

There the mother of all experts says about Live on the Test

"Live on the Test (released in England): Most is from the 1976 Old Grey Whistle Test, and it includes a couple of live cuts from the Breaking Silence era."

From this I would conclude that both cds aren't exactly the same.

Kathleen, are you there lurking? Help!!!

Hi everyone,

Mimi, it is a compilation with several big names of the era on there. I think there are several. In fact, it could be I have one... I'll take a look. I think it's the one with At 17 on it. If I have it I am happy to make copies for people. Just know that I am a bit of a slow person so it can take a while (as Mimi knows :o )

Yes Mimi they are different things. I have a signed copy of "Janis Ian Live on the Test 1976" (probably the same one you have) and all ten tracks are Janis and only Janis.

1. Jesse
2. Got To Get Up
3. At Seventeen
4. In The Winter
5. Applause
6. Bright Lights & Promises
7. I Would Like To Dance
8. Tea & Sympathy
9. Tattoo
10. His Hands

The catalogue number is WHISCD 008 if you want to compare them.

Thanks, Dee,
I checked my copy of Live on the Test and I suppose both versions to be at least VERY similar. But amazon UK gives a different catalogue number:
B00002MQ76
Maybe it's the same gig...

Live on the test and Old grey whistle test are the same thing , and it's a CD.

ah thanks roady, so I did order the right thing lol

it's a shame the Old Grey Whistle Test no longer exists, it was a top quality live show for real music fans.

I would actually watch TV if there were shows like that on. Hey can you access www.woodsongs.com? Don't forget to watch Janis on the 10th!

Well there you have it. If Kathleen Brogan says they’re the same then they must be.

I got my CD from Amazon today and it is the same as Live On The Test, just listed differently on amazon uk. I think the reason why they list it here as "The Old Grey Whistle Test" Janis Ian is that most people here know the tv programme from the 70s till 90s.

This was a bargain at £4.99.

Thanks again Mimi for the heads up :)

It is the same as "Live on the Test". It's mostly from the BBC "Old Grey Whistle Test" and there are 3 '90's Live songs from the "Breaking Silence" era on it. One rare moment is the "Got to Get up" duet with Claire Bay, which has never been on any other album, vinyl or otherwize. Janis carried them in the late 90's on this site, and she and I were able to find some for one of the holiday sales a couple of years back. They flew off of her shelves like hot cakes, if I recall.

Hope this helps!
