I called the local PBS station (KCTS - Channel 9 in Seattle) asking them to please pick up the feed and broadcast this program. They kindly called me back this morning and said that they had taped it, but would be about 6-8 weeks before it would be broadcast due to scheduling issues. Keep checking their online schedule on website (www.kcts.org).

'Live from Grand Center' just aired here last night at 10 pm on a local PBS station...I watched it from beginning to end--again--and it never gets old!
The only complaint I have is that the lighting was pretty awful, not flattering, but Janis shone through it with her grace and beautiful music.
The time slot was a good one, so I hope a lot of people got to see it!

Janis Ian on film
John Killacky, the arts and culture program officer at the San Francisco Foundation who used to run Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, is also a filmmaker with an ear for music. He's the producer and co-director of the PBS special "Janis Ian: Live From Grand Center," a concert film starring the singer and songwriter that Killacky filmed for the St. Louis public TV station KETC (the Missouri Film Commission offers tax credits for independent filmmakers to shoot there). The film airs at 7 p.m. Saturday on KQED's Life Channel (Comcast 189, Digital 54.3).
In addition to the live concert, the film includes footage of Leonard Bernstein introducing the 15-year-old Ian to sing her controversial song about interracial romance, "Society's Child," and a 1975 performance of her classic "At Seventeen." -

Haven't seen an air date for any of the Public TV stations in Minnesota....I know Twin Cities Public Television got the feed, but whether they have aired the program I have no idea. Duluth Public Television shows practically everything that the Twin Cities station airs (they don't have the budget to do much more than that but I haven't seen in the local listing so far. Still hoping....Northern Minnesota could benefit considerably from some serious Janis exposure.
Oh, by the way, if "Twin Cities" mystifies you, see Wildflower Fever's thread in The Zoo. It's a Minnesota thing.

Dave,
I lived in Minneapolis for 8 years and we miss it. The programmer at Twin Cities Public Television told me he was interested and I will try to get a date from him and let you know on the board. But also please do contact the station and ask them if they'd consider broadcasting - it's worked in other cities. Thanks.

I can try--I live 180 miles north of the Twin Cities and so get Duluth Public Television (which is about as sophisticated as, say, the Metropolitan Opera Company of Galveston). But there's no reason I can't bug them both.

Won a video of this at the recent auction and really enjoyed it. Wondered though about the lack of anecdotes and chat wondered whether this was just editing or whether Janis did just perform songs with almost no talking at the event itself. Spotted Dar and Marjan in the audience and no doubt there were quite a few other there too. Would be interested to know.

The entire performance took a bit over two hours. Janis told stories between songs as she usually does. I was somewhat surprised that all of that part had been edited out of the final broadcast. They did pack in the maximum number of songs possible.
The list of out-of-town Rudies included: Dar, Karen, Marjan, Oak Kitten, Bat, Marcia, Roady, Jenny, Randy and Betty, Illinois Bill and his partner (sorry I don't remember his name.) I was there as was Sara, who recently joined the board, and, well the place was packed!
This was a very special evening for me. I got to see Janis put on a spectacular show and I got to meet, socialize, and EAT with a bunch of Rudies!

Anna,
As is ALWAYS the case Janis is always better live!!! Janis had lots to say though much was edited out :(.... Still John K. and the crew did a wonderful show not only related toproducing a fabulous show but also to finding the time to welcome and make all of us "travelin' rudies" feel more then welcome...
I have to admit that my favorite part was just how much fun it was watching Janis perform "Ginny the flying girl", which was the only song which required retakes..... (4 retakes if memory serves me right...) Anna, it was great, Janis handled forgetting the words like a true trooper.... She joked about it then picked it up and started again....and again... and again.... We all loved it... To see it on the video one would never know, the song was flawless... But seeing the look on Janis's face when she stopped in the middle to start over was priceless... proving that even Janis is human:eek: (Not once did she blame the true culprit guilty of her memory lapse.... But we all know it was REDJACK's fault...)
In any case glad you enjoyed the show... Janis, John K. and both crews as well as the facility staff made this show one that will forever bring smiles to Betty and I... Wish you were there...
Best and of course HAPPY FRIGGEN' HOLIDAYS to you and yours....

I wrote an email to my pbs station (WTTW - Chicago) and received a reply that said "JANIS IAN LIVE FROM GRAND CENTER is not currently scheduled to air on WTTW, but we'd be happy to submit a request on your behalf."
I can only hope.

Sally and Randy gave excellent descriptions of the live performance. Couldn't agree more. I agree that to fully appeciate Janis is to see her in person. While the PBS airing is a permanent, treasured piece on my DVR, I would have preferred that they had left in her stories.

This concert was a retirement gift and probably the best gift I've ever received. Meeting Janis after the show (even if only briefly) was like a dream. While waiting in line, I worried that I might make a fool of myself, not knowing what to say to the woman/artist I have admired for the last 40 years. The only thing that would have made this event even better for me would have been the socializing and eating with you all. (I wasn't on the message board, yet.)
To Janismanis II !
Well, you are now, Sara, and glad to have you aboard...next time we'll all dine together!
If Janis' stories had been included, the show would have run 2 1/2 hours, at least!! ...but I bet they did record it in its entirety, warts and all...and it's going to gather dust for at least 40 years before someone drags it out of the archives and enshrines it as it should be on prime time! Alas, the vicissitudes of commercial tv...even non-commercial tv(PBS) ....

^what Bat said! I know some people who would pay big bucks for that recording, especially if it was at an auction!! :D It was an exceptional experience seeing Janis at work as the consummate professional and being included in the behind the scenes action.
Well, you are now, Sara, and glad to have you aboard...next time we'll all dine together!
Thanks, Bat! I'd really like that.

Unfortunately, my local PBS station (KCTS Channel 9 in Seattle) picked up the national feed, but told me that they don't have any plans of showing it. I'll bug them again since I've sent them donations before and my aunt has been a member for many years.
Anyway, does anyone have a copy of the concert taped from local PBS broadcast (either on VHS or DVD) that they would be willing to sell?
Maybe if John K helped produce the program, he could have some influence in getting an unedited copy? As many of the folks stated, listening to Janis's stories between the songs is what really makes her concerts special.

I'm told it was originally going to be much more of a documentary type thing, but that the interview footage - a lot of it - was on a master reel the TV station insisted on keeping. And they lost it. So I guess all the editing was done originally with the thought that documentary stuff would go inbetween.

Oh that's too funny Barb! If Peggy read this she would be on the floor laughing hysterically. The idea that I would actually be able to keep time for a musician. She is forever adjusting my clap timing. She says I have a tendency to clap on the one and three instead of the two and four.....or is it the other way around? Hope you all like the "Janis Ian: Live From Grand Center" cover design. Janis' new designer did a great job I think. Can't wait for all the rudies to let us know what they think of the show.
Happy Holidays to all.
