View Full Version : Garage sale in middle America

I've been working my butt off (oops, it didn't work!) getting ready for a garage sale that started today. The amount of CRAP a family accumulates in 13 years is amazing. The unseasonably warm and humid weather made the preparations less than tolerable. The "early birds" who show up an hour before the opening time and want me to let them in really piss me off. The dealers who come first thing and want me to lower my prices irk me.

Now that I have the bitching done, let me tell you how today was once we got started. Instead of a barrage of people, there was a steady stream, and they were eagerly greeted by our dogs, Misty and Drifter. The only time they barked was when someone had their dog in the car, and HE started it! Most people were truly "dog people" who petted, talked to, and loved on them both--especially Drifter. (If I knew how, here's where I'd post Wendy's lovely photo of Drifter!) The #1 question of the day was, "What kind of dog is he?" (to the best of our knowledge, he's samoyed and Great Pyrenees) #2 question was, "Does he shed a lot?" (Oh, HELL yes!)

The best part of the day was when I said "hello" to a lady, and she and looked at each other rather intently. She looked familiar and I could tell she thought the same. I thought I knew who she was, then she nodded, said , "Yes. Karen?" Then I yelled, "DEBBIE!" We hugged, yelled, and probably scared the other people. It was my best friend from junior high and most of high school. I hadn't seen her in over 21 years. Her mom lives in a new assisted living place just a few blocks from me. We had a great time chatting, and will get together soon.

I sold some stuff, talked to a bunch of interesting (and not so interesting) people, and was exhausted when I finally closed the doors. Tomorrow I get to do it all over again.

Oh yeah, Ned had taken off work today and tomorrow to help, but he disappeared early on. He had some crisis with work, and spent most of the day on the phone and computer. That's OK. I survived.

I'm going to bed now!

Yes, it can be tiring. I hope that all in all you did have a good time though.

Yeah, I sold some stuff. Is there more? Oh, HELL yes!

Today was cooler, and not as many people. I still got rid of some more stuff. The dogs were in and out of the house more, so I don't think they got quite as tired as they did yesterday.

The big question today centered on Ned's '63 VW bug that was sitting in the driveway. Men love that car! Most want to know the year.

I started this post earlier, and in the meantime, my sister and niece came over to bring some more things for the sale. YIKES! Ned (sinister person that he is) persuaded Kristina to take a stuffed animal home with her. I'm sure she does not need another one, but it was purple -- her favorite color.

My folks came over to help eat bean soup and apple walnut cobbler. Yes, on top of everything else, I cooked. Go figure...

I'm ready for tomorrow to be over.

Karen, you can come over to my house and have a rummage sale. I'll provide the stuff....

Housemate is gone almost another week. Do you suppose I could sell all her stuff while she's gone?

Can't you just sell your housemate?

Is that legal? Because if it is....... I'm having a liquidation sale! Anybody want a mean, abusive eighty-two year old? Lot's of miles, but many new parts. As is; no tradebacks!

Unfortunately, Eva, I have not yet succeeded in attempts to even give her away. If someone would pay a good price, that would actually be a plus, but I can't imagine who would.

I won't put her on the Rudie auction....that would be an indignity to the auction.

That close-up of Drifter's face just melts my heart! If only he were as smart as he is pretty!

Today the people came in dribbles. I made it a "rule" that each kid who came in had to leave with a FREE stuffed animal! I negotiated most prices, and got rid of some more stuff. Now I have to box up everything and have someone come and get it. My neighbor's cleaning lady will pick it up and sell it. We get a receipt for tax purposes, and the proceeds go to a local charity to aid in finding a cure for a disease that 2 brothers have in our community.

Tonight we are keeping our "adopted" granddaughters overnight. They're tucked into bed, and I must go to be soon, because they are early risers. :(

Now, to get my garage cleaned up...

I have to smile, Karen. Remember that maroon jacket you gave me when you were getting ready for your last garage sale? Well, last year, it was the only coat I wore all winter. I love that thing. Had it on today as a matter of fact. It hangs on the hooks with the kids coats by the garage door.

Very good things come from garage sales!
