it's happened again! it seems to happen ever couple months or so, but over the last vcouple moths it's happened several times. I'm in love and i like it. right now, i'm finding myself in love with the song "aftertones" and the song "maria" and it's not like i've never heard them before. I get to listen to my music in my car and it takes about 20 mins to get to work and home i just keep pressing the "back" button on the cd player to listen over and over again. The Cd is "up til now" and if you listen carefully you can hear the very moment that Janis discovers ( tho she may not know what it's called at this point) the "power" she speaks of on the "Janismania" dvd
listen carefully to the tenderness ( much like that of new baby peas still in the pod) of her voice on "stars"
listen to how she uses her voice to make the music almost "painful to the ear" in aftertones.
feel that fearful, selfconscious, timidity turn to something just short of anger and into a strange kind of knowing confidence in "at seventeen"
I could go on, but i won't just now
Janis,I'm in love...again
Hey Hoops,
Did I ever show you the very first "poem" I posted on the message board. Janis' unexpected response? She wrote, "I thought it was pretty funny." Did that ever change my historical view of "the queen of depression!" LOL :D
We love Janis Ian
What a state to be in
I love Janis Ian
But she has a wife
A partner for life
And I have a husband (who cares)
What a mess of postings
Compliments and roastings
Here's some advice
Let's all be nice
Or at least try to be fair
Aussies with their humour
Canucks and baby boomers
Kimbe and Pat
Tip of the hat
To the Brits and Chet in Hong Kong
What a state to be in
We love Janis Ian
Except for the few
Who spit up their spew
And think it'll get them somewhere
Janis I am grateful
Please ingore the hateful
Messages here
We love ya dear

dee,
please understand that i am not contradicting you by saying this, i'm not saying janis was sad or upset or felt anything the music talks about when she sings, i'm just saying she knows how to make it FEEL that way. Sure i love janis, but I'm in love with her music ( no offense Janis). some artists feel "on paper"... a great artisits makes others feel while "viewing" the artwork
dee, i love our coversation exchanges, please continue to make me think.
peace

Hoops,
The poem was not written with any reflection on what you wrote per se, just something I posted in the year 2000 mainly in response to what was happening on board at that time.
To the Brits and Chet in Hong Kong
So there really was a Chet from Hong Kong. I met him after her show in Singapore last year. I wonder what happened to him? I mean, I know he's still singing in Hong Kong, but I wonder why he never registered on the new board?
Definitely there was a male Chet, Chet. :) At least in 2000. Don't recall seeing him post in the past couple of years tho.
It's getting quite confusing! All those Chets, Davids, Daves, Dees, Dianes, Karens, etc... Oh well, there is only one Pirate Queen, so nobody can ever misstaken me for another.

Pirate Queen
Only one Melba too....:D
And hoops, I hear exactly what you are saying. I feel that way about "The Drowning Man". That song just sticks in my brain and speaks to me and there does seem to be a "painful" tone to it coming from Janis. Its a story that unravels anywhere you want it to, really.
