I can't remember if I have ever seen Idols. But the last thing I heard was really weird to me. The judges' opinion was that one of the contestants was singing allright but her 'appearance' was not right (she is a big girl) So she had to go. What a shallow point of view... Now I am sure that I don't want to watch that show.

I can't bear to watch American Idol or Canadian Idol. The whole setup is painful to see. However, this might be a good song for that rejected contestant to sing:

Never mind what you think you know about me
Never mind what you might have seen on the tv
You can’t believe every single word you’re gonna read
What I am is too far in for you to see

Never mind who said that I was that far gone
Never mind when they tell you sex is all I what
You can’t believe that I’m every word that I write down
What I am is too far in and can’t be found

Never mind what they’re gonna say is probably wrong
Never mind ain’t about the singer it’s the song
You can’t believe how a person looks is who they are
What I am is too far in and can’t be found
What I am is too far in and can’t be found
What I am is too far in and can’t be found
What I am is too far in and can’t be found

Never Mind (Jann Arden)

For the American version, it's been mostly Simon. He really doesn't seem to like big people, with the exception of Ruben Studdard. Let's see, there have been several contestants who he's called out because of their weight - Vanessa Olivieri, Jennifer Hudson, Mandisa. IIRC correctly, he seems to have thought that Kelly Clarkson was a bit pudgy.

When Mandisa auditioned, Simon mouthed off, "I think we're going to need a bigger stage." When she was called back for being in the final 12, she said to Simon that he had hurt her feelings, but she forgave him. In a nutshell, she said that if Jesus could forgive her sins, she could forgive Simon. He ate a little humble pie, he apologized, and they hugged.

Geez, guess we have to ditch Ma Rainey, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbara Cook, Bessie Smith, most opera singers... and I suppose Beethoven would have had too prominent a nose, Pete Seeger would be too tall... sheesh!

Well, I hope they don't have anything against short singers. Oh wait, Paula Abdul. one of the judges, is quite short, too, isn't she?

Mmmm. Just for fun, let's imagine the feedback for Ella...

Randy: Ya got great pipes, dawg, but the runs were just like, you know, too much.
Paula: You know I love you. You've got a magnificent instrument. You have to work on your stage presence more.
Simon: That was a mess. A Tisket, A Tasket??? It sounds like something I might hear at a children's party. If you can't come up with something that relates to today's voters, I'm afraid tonight may have been your last night.

Exactly, Janis. What a waste of air time.

Chaka Khan would be too big... And man, does that woman have a voice! And a stagepresence too, by the way. She is absolutely 'there'.

And Aretha and Patti wouldn't have made it past the Hollywood round.
