well it wasn;t actually a walk, i was trying to run to the store next to me and gete some eggs cause i wanted to make brownies for my nephews and i had already added th otheer ingredients. from my door to the door of the store is 25 yards tops and in that time i saw two young men dressed in black slacks and white dress shirts and ties carrying books and wearing name tags. Now i lived in Utah for 2 years an NEVER was i stopped by evangelists for the mormon faith, but here in Ny i have been stopped a few times. this was just a particularly bad time cause chocolate stuff in a bowl in my kitchen was turning to stone while these two boys talked to me. i tried to excuse myself twice, telling them i was busy at home. they continued, asked me if i had read the book of mormon, i replied in the affirmative. had i read the bible, yes but i really need to go. i won't get into the tiny debate we got into when i finally convinced them i needed to move quickly. they asked if wee could meet at another time. not that i don;t think mormon is a valid religion, it's just not for me ok gentlemen? thank you, have a great day.
got home, my brownie stuff was a rock in the bottom of the bowl, took me a good ten minutes to loosen it up without having to add anything that might ruin my whole batch. got em done, in the oven and got to the more important task of eating my now cold corn on the cob. heck but i was right with God so all was good.

I was visited by a college friend years ago. He invited these gentlemen into my home for a discussion. I think it took two days to get rid of them. If I had had a porn flick I would have put it into the VCR.

I knew a woman that had gotten so tired of religious proselytizers that she put up a sign on her door that said she would love to hear what they had to say if they were all in the nude.

Yes, Hoops, it's annoying and an invasion of privacy, even if well-intentioned.

When I was a real little kid, my father told this story regarding a phone call (years and years before caller I.D.) that went something like this:

Caller: Good evening, sir. You are the lucky contestant in our contest. All you have to do is answer one question. Who is the current president of the United States?

My Father: It's Harry S. Truman. (Or Dwight Eisenhower)

Caller: That's right! Congratulations! You have won a complimentary dance lesson at the XYZ Dance Studio. When can you come in for your lesson?

[Several more exchanges, with my father unable to get off the phone, until:]

My Father: Oh, I'd love to come in, but you see . . . I'm a paraplegic.
(He wasn't.)

Caller: Good-bye.

Maybe not the best way, but it worked. ;)

sara,
first, if it was true that your father was parapalegic, my sympathies to you. still it was funny. i usually end religious interuptions that are too persistant by asking how they feel about homosexuality. i get their answer and give my reply "oh then you won't want to meet my girlfriend" oops...bye...sales calls...I'm disabled and live below the poverty level. bye political calls...i'm schizophrenic and you are triggering me terribly...bye...calls for donations... poverty, but as soon as i get some money, i'll look into your cause bye...no purchase necessary...what do i have to buy?...but what do i have to buy? nothing? but i get what for free? no thank you i would never use that product. it's distructive to the planet. bye... and people who call after 8 pm or on weekends... this is my time, don;t call me again on my time...bye...all true and quick ways to get rid of unwanted attention.
you can use them even if they are not true, but i'm sure you have things that are true that can get the noise to stop

If the interuption is on the phone I ask for the caller's supervisor sinceI'm on the "Do Not Call List". That usually gets them gone quickly or gets me a phone number to report. Usually they hang up.

Hoops, you have a lot of patience.

I have to admit I have no patience at all for people who want to waste my time. And why should I? My time may not be important to them but it is to me.

No means no, it doesn’t mean keep yammering on, and if you persist in trying to manipulate my response then you cease to exist to me. It’s game over – end of story. And that’s true whether it’s online, over the phone, or in person on the street.

My brother opened the door for jehova's witnesses... in the nude  They left very quickly.
One of my best friends opened the door for trick or treaters... holding an axe  They also left quickly and they were screaming :D
Personally I just say "no, not interested and leave / shut the door"

When the religious types ( Mormons and Witnesses ) ring my bell, I point out the Mezuzah on the door jamb and the rainbow sticker on my bumper.

I ignore most everybody else over the age of 18. Kids out raising money for school trips and sports teams... different story. If they are selling something I can use, like chocolate, I'll do them 10 or 20 bucks. I have found this good insurance against vandalism!

We have the National Wildlife sign on our front door: Certified Wildlife Habitat... we're kind of out of the way where we live and don't get many people coming to the door. And we no longer have a land line. So I haven't had to be rude for a while.

i am somewhat of a patient person BUT my little talks with interuptors are two fold, to end the encounter and to make sure they never call again.
