davem,
you are a genious! this is a great idea! each of us offer something, no matter what it may be...a song, jam, a recipe, a book, something we have from our Janis collection, poems, anything at all that we would like to share and have our own auction of sorts. sending bids by private message to the person with the item we want. after a certain number of days, we let the high bidder know who they are and they send a check in the amount of their bid to the pearl foundation. completely rudie run, Janis doesn't even have to get out of bed. we can choose a date to "advertise" our items on a specificly chosen item thread...allow 10 days to collect bids and then. post winners on a specificly chosen winner list. people auctioning an item agree to pay postage and handling. and all funds go directly to the pearl foundation. each person can offer more than on item if they wish, but each item should be listed individually.
what does eveyone think????

Count me in, let's just make sure it's OK with Janis and John (not sure what impact it may have on the server). Then you can set start and end dates and procedures. (for example, does the buyer write a check to Pearl Foundation then send it to the seller who sends it to the foundation along with any other checks if he/she has multiple items sold; does the seller edit original postings with latest bids once a day; seller covers shipping so all $ can go to Pearl, does the seller set an opening bid, if the seller has multiples of the same item is it listed 2x or states that one goes to each of the top two bidders, etc.)
jm
Forgive me for butting in here Hoops and correct me if I’m wrong but it sounds like quite a simple process actually. No one has to bother with Janis about any of it.
Items will be posted in a thread on the forums to be bid upon and the ones who are bidding send their bid by Private Message to the owner of each item they want to bid on.
Then once bidding closes, each "winner" sends a cheque (check) directly to the Pearl Foundation.

I'm in. I'm not sure what I'll offer, exactly, but I'll come up with something. I think the winning bidder could forward his/her receipt from the Pearl after payment has been made.
Here are some of my thoughts for things I could offer:
-Rude Girl dammit dolls
-"I'd rather be at a Janis Ian concert" shirts (whenever I get my F*****g machine up and running)
-A quilt kind of like the one we gave Janis at JanisMania (that one would take a hefty start bid!)
Send me a PM if you want to let me know what you think. (about the auction! ;) ) Or if you have other suggestions.

dee, yes i think it is veery simple. just the way you described it. Janis doesn't need to get involved accept to deposit the check whic go directly from the buyer to the pearl foundation. i'm thinking make it easy as possible. make the start date of bidding, the day when all items need to be on the auction item thread, i'm thinking end of october, beginninng of November just so there is eenough time for shipping and such. have 10 days of silent bidding sent directly to "seller's" by PM...no one knows anyone elses bids and annouce the winners on the 11th day on it's very own thread. postage paid buy "seller" and all items have 5 days after winners are annouced to be mailed out. simple. easy, bing bang boom...
thoughts anyone on
Date to begin bidding
who should pay postage
should bids be made public?
length of bidding time
other questions and thoughts
if it's to get started end of October we need to decide soon so all can have to to make, find, buy, etc whatever items they want to auction off.
I will get it organised to start with, if people agree on that.

Are you crazy hoops......anything but my precious things.
Apart from that I like this idea a lot.........I´M IN.....I can offer some of those sweaters handmade of course http://www.randburg.com/is/123/sweaters_2.html
Phew, glad I understood your proposal correctly Hoops!
Since this is meant to give Janis a break while helping out at the same time, I think your idea is great! Janis has been more than generous to us fans for so long that it’s only fair we give her something back for the holidays this year (including a much needed rest).
In the meantime, I have NO idea what I could offer for auction but I’ll try to think of something.
Well, I'm pretty good at hand embroidery work (boy did I have a lot of relearning to do after I lost my eye!) - seems the thing that I give to folks that they enjoy/use the most is embroidered dish towels (my folks always called them "tea towels".) I'd gladly do something along that line if anyone might be interested.

I would gladly donate back my autographed red plastic mug from the Vancouver Folk Festival of 2004 that I won at the Rudie-Que auction.
I, selfishly, would like to see everyone hold on to their money and their terrific ideas for auction items and bring them when you attend JanisMania II next summer. On the other hand, in no way am I suggesting that any donation to the Pearl Foundation should be passed over. I know that we will be limited to 50 attending and there may be some who visit here who will not be able to attend and who would like to be involved in an on-line auction. I know we will be looking for novel items/projects that Rudies come up with for that weekend auction as well as extra cash on hand to outbid one another....fresh ideas and flush with cash!
So, Christmas in July, anyone?

beth,
i hear what you are saying and i understand what you mean by saving for janismania II. it's just that i know some peoplee have money just for the holiday sale and look forward to it every year. the items and bids don;t have to be large amounts, in fact, in the spirit of the holiday sale, lower bids are what i'm hoping for so that people don;t feel overwhelmed, can give to the cause and can feel like they participated in the holiday event.
when will we be getting more info on JanismaniaII, cost, location and such...mostly cost. i am saving my pennies.

let me again state that any item you choose to auction is acceptable as long as it is physically tangible. elliott brought to the table the idea of offering cards that read "a dontation has been made in your name to the pearl foundation" i think this is a great idea for anyone who might not want anything but would like to give to the cause. i can find someone to make them OR someone can volunteer to make them and the PM with the amount of the buyer's donation should be PM'd to the person ( myself or another artist) who would be sending the card...payment still goes directly to the pearl foundation.

What about the "no solicitation" clause in the rules of the message board?

What about the "no solicitation" clause in the rules of the message board?
I don't *think* that applies in this case. This isn't for someone's personal benefit. It is to benefit the Pearl Foundation. BIG difference!
Marcia
Since this project is to raise funds for Janis' own charity Sally (and to give Janis a break) I’m quite sure that it won’t be considered “solicitation” as such.
edit: I see you beat me to it Marcia.

i fully intend to get Janis' full permisson to hold this auction before we start anything. but you are right, no solicitation is something that needs to be considered. thank you for reminding me
I'm really excited about this,i think we as a group can make something wonderful here. and since i seem to be the one doing most of the talking, i will step up to be the "go to" person, to make and have approved rules and rsponsibilities, to finalize chosen dates, to answer questions...well you get the point. i really believe it can be done very simply. i'm hoping we can all agree to make it happen.

Hoops you know I'm in, I just have to come up with something....
But it works for me!
Beth, not to worry, it's ALL GOOD!;)
I think it all depends on just what one is soliciting.
I mean, there is soliciting, and there is Soliciting.

Beth, make sure Elliott attends. He is great at bidding, even against himself.:D And if Mike UK doesn't make it, you know that KS2 is a pretty adept hand at relieving folk of their hard earned.

Yeah, me too. So Kath where do you think you will go first - The Netherlands (Holland), or Australia (once known as New Holland or Van Diemens Land)?
The Netherlands of course! You HAVE to start with the Pirate Queen :)

Noel, you did get John L's response, right? I emailed it to you again. He suggests that, once you can let him know the rules in a concise format (email privately and copy me please), he can kick it off whenever - we're thinking Nov 1 would be good.

Well I'm in then..I have amatuer mp3 recordings of 2008 Birchmere, 2006 Va Beach, Gravity Lounge and Club Cafe Janis shows available. The Club Cafe recording has crowd versus Janis loudness issues and the Gravity Lounge one clips out on extremely powerful notes. The other two have good sound with the Birchmere being the best of the four.
Anyone interested???

 I'll make a paypal contribution, but you can have my Janis stuff when you pull it out of my cold, dead hand!:) I know I'm close to being put in the nut file, but please don't ask me to give away my stuff. I only give two types of presents as it is.... great hair stuff I get for free for selling my "quota" every week, and Janis CD's. And now the book... I am still looking for my pick that Janis put in my hand.... I'll send fifty bucks right now if someone can tell me where I put it.... Keep in mind, this was a pick she had just used.... Karen, could it be somewhere in your car? I WANT MY PICK BACK!
Okay, tantrum over; or would that be called a vent?
hoops
10-09-2008, 08:26 PM
elliott, there is no need to give away your Janis stuff. you can make something, share a recipe, a photo, a book, anything you can think of that someone might want to bid on. it all goes to the pearl foundation. oh and i will b making cards stating that " " has had a donation made in their name to the pearl foundation. so there are plenty of ways to give.

As usual, I'm late in reading this thread (give me a break - I came into the world a whole month late). Are auction items still accepted, and can they be non Janis items?
I may have something, but I can only confirm next week. Is that okay?
