View Full Version : JanisMania II

The here has been some recent discussion about repeating the JanisMania weekend. I’d like to know if there might be enough potential interest from Rudies and Message Board visitors to pursue planning this kind of event again. Many of us who were able to attend the first gathering found it to be a great opportunity to strengthen the sense of community established here on the board, to get to spend some informal time with Janis, and to raise some funds for the Pearl Foundation. Although I have not been able to participate in the Picnics, it is clear that those terrific events have served the same purpose and have been equally successful. To repeat JanisMania, we would need a good showing of participants, probably a minimum of 30. Participation would be limited to 50 registrants, on a first-come, first-served basis, as before.

And so, I am asking for your feedback. Should we do JanisMania again? Do folks have the money and time to participate? Are we looking at next summer or at another future date, if at all?

This is a show of hands only. No commitment at this point. Of course, Janis’ schedule and the availability of an appropriate facility are key here. It goes without saying that Janis has the final say in all things Rudie.

Interested?

I think you'd better check with Janis. I thought I heard her say in an interview that she wouldn't do it again. I could be wrong however, but better ask the source.

I'm in too but June '09 would not be good for me as our new Nursing Home is due to finish then and I couldn't abandon the team at such a critical time.

This is SOOOOOOO exciting!

We have to get a good piano for Janis as she may grace us with a piano song or two. Happy to pay for the costs of that Beth (well, within reason). I presume we are talking the same location as before?

I'd love to be there!!! And I'd do everything to make it happen, given that it takes place during my summer holidays at school, that would be six and a half weeks from July 2nd.

Rachel and I have the great plan to move back to the Heidelberg area next summer. That would mean holidays from July 2 till September 11... but first I must find a teaching job there... and moving will cost us time and money.

Anyway I'll try to make both dreams come true.

I think the plan is to have it either at the same place, or somewhere nearby. Beth has to have it where she can manage it in close proximity to her family.

I think I could do a wonderful business of renting fans if we are at the Benedictine Inn in July or August! :p

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dee can be here by then!!

I'd like to say count us in... but it would definitely depend on when/where.

We're recouping from lots of wedding expenses, a trip to Pittsburgh, and a trip home for Rachel to see her family.
Plus we're finally getting our honeymoon at the end of January. That ain't gonna be cheap (but it sure is going to be fun!!!).

But for the Pearl Foundation??? If we can swing it, we will absolutely be there.

Is it going to be in hundred degree humidity again? Sorry, my sweat glands had to ask...

I just "did" August in Western Texas. Bring it one. As I recall, the air conditioning did at least work in the public areas and Janis was staying at a respectible place, so presumably she and her entourage would not be inconvenienced. Rudies, on the other hand, seem to be able to bear anything.

I do hope there will be a piano suitable for The Amazing Brogan to recline on.

Of course I wouldn't miss it!

Now am I correct in understanding that it has to be at the convent? I ask because I was just looking for room prices at a hostel and notice that they rent out the entire place. Looks like you can have the entire facility for about 35 bucks a person per day. There's kitchen facilities and you can also get a chef. For all the details see Friendly Crossways (http://www.friendlycrossways.com/)
Here's the place.

Uh oh, pressure's on now...

I should clarify for those who were not able to participate last go 'round. The first JanisMania was a real risk. It was scary for everyone, most of all, I think, for Janis, who took the biggest risk by placing herself in a situation that could have been a disaster. As it turned out, it was an incredible community building experience. It went well because: 1) every single person who participated was respectful of Janis and of the other Rudies. No one crossed any lines or behaved inappropriately which would certainly have meant the demise of any future attempts at this kind of fundraiser. It went well because: 2) every person there was extremely generous in their support of the Pearl Foundation, both in terms of their substantial registration fee, and because of the additional monies and projects that they brought to the auction. They were also happily willing to put up with the fact that the accomodations, food, and general atmosphere were very, very simple. We were able to keep the cost low so that as much of the fees paid went to the Pearl Foundation. Everyone played the good sport about the externals because it was about being together and raising money. The convent had the kind of space that Janis needed for each part of the weekend. And the whole package was very reasonable. It went well because 3) it was well planned. But I never lost sight of the fact that even with the best plans made, stuff can still go wrong. I was lucky and I was indebted to the Rudies who made it a terrific event.

So, we all made it a success and that is why Janis is willing to do it again.

This post is long, but one more thing:
My partner and I have three kids, one of whom has significant disabilities. It is really tough for us to ever get away. I am not complaining. We did this on purpose and have no regrets. To the contrary, I am grateful for her every day. Still, I couldn't imagine being able to attend to the details of this event from a distance, nor could I realisitically do the travel back and forth needed ahead of time. In order for more funds to make it to the Pearl Foundation, it has to be done on the cheap and that means doing a lot of the grunt work yourself. Ben, I know you know what I am talking about! So, that's just how it goes and why I need it to be here in Indy or nearby.

KarenSews2
09-20-2008, 10:27 PM
Well put, Beth. And you know you can call on me for anything (that doesn't involve heavy lifting!)

Just checking in for a second as my health has continued to worsen. We'd be in depending on the things Randy PA said....health, budget, etc. I'd also HAVE to have a room with working air conditioning. I have to agree with Beth 100%, until you've done something like this you really can't imagine all the effort that goes into pulling an event of this scale off successfully. Having the advantage of being able to coordinate face to face with the venue and support people is a must.

I read through this thread five times now and can't understand what is going on.

Did I miss something? Is there really no air conditioning? I had thought this was just a joke. Many of us with allergies and asthma need cool air at night to breathe.

I wasn't around during JanisMania so I have absolutely no idea what the cost would be. I live on an extremely low fixed income, can't anyone give me even a hint of what the cost would be? Would it be - $100.00, $200.00, $300.00 etc? I don't even know whether or not to get excited.

I don't mean to offend, cause problems or be mean...I'm just wondering.

Darlene, JanisMania was held at a Benedictine....what was it called exactly? Anyway, it was dorm-style accomodations. Some rooms, the a/c didn't work too well. We were lucky as ours did.

At that time it was $500 a person. You got a LOT for that. And yes, it is a lot of money..most if not all went to the Pearl Foundation. I myself don't know if I'll be able to do it again. Even if I am well enough, my finances are going to be mostly nil due to having to tap my emergency resources during this lengthy illness.

Start putting away some $ now. I can't tell you what it will cost or if it will definitely be in the same place again. Beth will keep us updated. I just know it was an experience I will never forget and WELL worth every dime.

Thank you so much Marcia..whew. I know that it will not be the same amount but at least now I know something a kinda ballpark estimate. Armed with information I can now decide if it is beyond my means or start saving. I can also decide if I am getting old for all nighters (no a/c)

I have been envying eveyone who were able to participate in the first one. The bits and pieces I heard about and from the Club cafe make me really want to go. I see nothing wrong with giving to the Pearl Foundation. I find it a very worthy cause. I have been a nontraditional student it is tough going back to school and obtaining the money to be able to do so. Thanks for doing this Janis.

I just today got me a job "weekly cleaning a house". Not the best kind of job but hay someone's got to do it and I need the money.

Thanks again Marcia,

The Benedict Inn is a former all-girls Catholic high school, called Our Lady of Grace. When I was a kid, I did not understand that it was a boarding school. I didn't know anyone who went there. I didn't have a fan in my room and while it was a bit warm, it wasn't terrible. It is a dormitory situation, with community bathrooms "down the hall." Seriously, I could check into renting fans on an individual basis. I personally don't have access to a large number of box fans! ;) I do love my A/C!!!

I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but when Beth and I were talking about a JanisMania II, on the way home from Cincinnati, she did say that she was pretty certain the price would go up from 2004.

As much as I would love to, I won't be coming to a Janismania. A bit too rich for my wallet. A very generous Rudie (you know who you are ;) and I still don't know how to thank you properly) payed for my ticket to Pittsburgh, otherwise I couldn't have come there either. I think I have been a very lucky person so far so I won't moan about not being able to come this time :) I have met so many lovely people, I have met Janis in relaxed circumstances, I have eaten great food, I have been treated like a princess by Redjack and Kathy, I had a holiday with my fellow Dutch Rudies Marjan & Agnes, I had a wonderful hotel with my own bathtub (YAY!!!!! ) and last but not least, I have been in the US again. A country I really like to visit. I have had everything my heart desired. I am completely content. So... everyone who will go: have a great time and think of me. Make pictures so I can see your joy. Thanks!

If this is the place Benedict Inn and Conference Center (http://www.benedictinn.org/facilities/index.html) then it sounds and looks just perfect! It appears the air conditioning was a temporary problem or has been upgraded because from the description it certainly looks like heat won't be an issue. Also doesn't mention dorms.

Count me in! I thought I'd never get to do another rudie gathering, but this is close enough to home for me, and I will be there!
And as far as the a/c...what I call a/c and what the retreat called a/c were two different things. Gee, autumn would be nice, but I am sure timing depends upon Janis' schedule, among many other things.

You can count me in for Janismania II. As you all know I haven't been able to attend a Janis concert before and this way I would be able to see Janis and meet a lot of my fellow Rudies in the process. I might also be able to get a few friends to join me as well. I'm not sure, I'll have to wait and see what develops. I'm looking forward to Janismania II. I'll keep checking back for more details.

"Live at Club Cafe".......... got this recently and watched it last night for the first time. Hadn't realised that JanisMania would be featuring also! (I'm a wee bit slow sometimes). Reckon there were a few of you there????

I really enjoyed the DVD. Its my first time actually seeing Janis in a performance and hearing her speaking voice. Of course her performance was fab:cool: Really loved it all.

Enjoyed the interviews too.....oozing with wisdom. Would love to hear more and more and more!

I was struck by Janis saying "the real journey is in the striving, not the arriving -its the journey thats important not the end of the journey" - (might not be repeating her words accurately)

Have been reflecting on these words and for me just now I am realising that I am an expert at striving in the doing-ness but not so hot at striving in the being-ness.

Any comments welcome?

Angel, Angel, Angel.....

LOL, first I must confess that people with Wings tend to confuse me... (Just ask Bat, though our SongDragon dosen't confuse me....) Oh well at least you don't hang upside down from the rafters watching Australians burn steaks and evacuate hotels... (Do you at I least I don't think you do?)

Betty and I made it to the second club Cafe but didn't make it to the taping there...We also didn't get to Janismania I... Still we've been blessed over the past to years to meet many of the people that did... Now when we attend a Janis concert just about anyplace we tend to run into fellow rudies and you know it's nice to just have someone to say hello to... Just ask the Invis-a-rudies or Fred from the Cedarburg Wisconsin area if you can find them...

I have to tell you I've never met a rudie I didn't like....And Angel, if you happen to be going to a Janis concert and there happens to be no rudies in attendance then take along a "Rudie-in-training"...

Betty and I are a bit spontanious I guess... I look at the Tour schedule and say do you want to go to St. Louis or Chicago for a concert and she says yes and thats how destinations are planned... and all the things that lead to it... the helpful clues from other rudies, or getting to abuse and blame REDJACK for all that goes wrong... Well what could be better... And at the far point of each trip is the concert (or other get together) wether Virginia, New Jersey, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois or even around Pennsylvania... A concert that we get to a day or two early and see friends from all over the Universe... and Yes it's true that we do have intergalactic Rudies.... But The Saxman made me promise not to tell anyone so I won't mention Saxman Mikes Name...But then really who else would wear sandals in the snow in Philadelphia in January??? It's just a good thing Eva wasn't there or they would have been rolling around fighting over the sandals...

In all seriousness Betty and I look forward to adding you to the many rudies that we've found the pleasure to meet in our travels.... Just ask Mary.... We gave her the scenic tour of Pittsburgh in the rain after the book signing... We ended up in Tampa Florida... But hey, I blame REDJACK for the directions...If you don't believe me just ask Diverboy... See!!! I come complete with witnesses...

Be well and again welcome to the wonderful world of rudies...

Best to you and yours

R. from Pa

As I recall, the folks at the Benedict Inn kept promising that the air conditioning would improve. It never did. I still believe it was intended as a penance for something.

Okay Dougster, I've had one cataract done, but I still can't read your signature. I get the other one done in a couple of weeks. Do I have to wait until then, and what if I still can't read it?:D

Both cataracts fixed here and I had corrective lenses implanted...but it was still a challenge, I'm thinking it says "I wish you fireflies that sing your name"...or as the signature puts it I wish you fireflies that sing your name

Forgive me for this test post in case it doesn't work out right - don't know what's gonna show since the preview apparently isn't completely WYSIWYG and private email didn't give me all the same options for testing. BUT this is my "show of hands."

Whoa, Mary! You just took me back a few decades! My college roommate and I had grown up in the same denomination, even though we didn't meet until college. That church is known for having moments before a prayer where, "with every eye closed and every head bowed, raise your hand if you have requests for prayer." That would be followed with several comments of, "Yes, I see that hand." We had lots of fun with that one. (I know, I'm going to Hell...)

But Kathleen, my dear friend, how do you know that I'm not? :p

Some developmental milestones at this age:
* can converse at an almost adult level
* reading may be a major interest
* seeks to understand the reasons for things

Now, doesn't that sound like me? (Especially, the first . . .)

Yeah, I could see going to Janismania II. The first one was a real treat for me as well as Heather. What I appreciated was how generous Janis was with her time and herself at the conference centre. Not sure I'd like Indy in the height of summer, but she is worth it I think. The farewell breakfast is what I recall most. Do you recall that Janis had lost her voice and had to whisper? Do you all remember that? All those people in that dining area and not one sound was uttered, so we could all hear what she was saying. Cool memories.

WHEATON??? That's almost too scary! While I did not come from Wheaton, my roommate lived there for a time, and I think her father was minister of "that" church! (He later became a Methodist minister) Also, her first roommate, who stayed all of one quarter, was from there, and they had been friends for several years.

Yes, I see that hand...;)

Hi Beth,

Sorry, this is my very first posting to the message board! I'm still on a high since I was fortunate enough to attend Janis's LRC at author J.A. Jance's home on 9/27/08 -- it was FANTASTIC (even if Janis was still not feeling her best).

Yes, I'd LOVE to attend a JanisMania II event! Have the DVD from the 2004 JanisMania and thought it was absolutely wonderful. Since I live on the West Coast (Washington State), have not known about or attended one of the picnics, but would definitely make vacation plans to go back east for this event.

I've met a fellow Rudie (Kathleen Brogan) via eBay auctions and have recently purchased some CDs from her -- nice gal!

Could you please put me on a list of attendees or somehow let me know when/how to sign up if you do arrange a JanisMania II event? Sorry, just worried that if it's first come/ first serve I'll miss out if it's only posted on the message board.

Thanks!
Lori

We wanted to get an idea of whether there would be enough interest and ability of folks to attend another JanisMania event. It looks like there is. We are looking at possible dates at this point and what may or may not work.

If we can come up with a workable date and facility availability, the next step is actually opening registration. That wouldn't be 'til next Spring and that's when the "First come, first served" situation would come into play.

We will keep everyone informed via this Message Board.

So thanks for your interest one and all. And stay tuned!

Beth - I am hoping the the Mr and I can attend again, but as we're buying a new house we're going to have to see how the finances shake out. You can put us on the list as probables, I guess.

Hugs to you, V and the kids!
