OMG, just got back from visiting my elderly mother. she was so nurturing to feed me a 'fish' dinner. Fish is my favorite but never had this before, she told me it was called "Mai mai" from Hawaii. I tasted it and it was terrible, mind you I always have a good appetite and i couldn't eat it. so you can believe this was disgusting. She then revealed to me what it really was....DOLPHIN! I couldn't believe it. I had a taste of Fllipper, OMG. I hate myself now, how can i ever get over it? What a dirty trick, dont you think?

Mahi Mahi is a Dolphin Fish, not a Flipper-type mammal. It is usually pretty good fish, so maybe it just didn't get cooked right? Not to put down your, Mom, mind you, but some fish is better fried than baked, and vice versa.
Above all, don't worry...you did not eat Flipper!

I don't like MahiMahi either however you may take some solace in the following (and Flipper is safe)

...Dolphin fish are not to be confused with porpoises, which at times are also called dolphin. Dolphin fish (MahiMahi) are cold-blooded members of the fish family, while porpoises are mammals and are protected by law. The MahiMahi is a beautiful fish also known as "dorado". The fish has green and gold flanks that light up with a rainbow of iridescent colors that fade with time. Many retailers will display whole MahiMahi because they are so striking and to help dispel the myth that they are related to Flipper...

trish,
a lonnnnnnnng time ago when my 2nd oldest sister, who is 7 years older than i, got married she invited me to dinner. i was about 14 yrs old at the time. she served up the meal happy as can be and i politely ate it tho i thought it was kinda gamey (sp) and i wasn't a real big meat eatter. but i thanked her as was polite. when i had finished and was helping clear the table she told me it was rabbit. now my younger sisters had rabbits at the time so all i could think of was poor bunny and clyde being cooked up for dinner...it was an awful feeling. i really wish people wouldn't do that. when it comes to food we all have deep convictions about what we eat and not telling us puts us in a terrible place. you didn't eat flipper , as the others have said, but i'm sure it upset you terribly thinking that you had. we need to respect people's convictions even when it seems as benign as food. heck my family has been trying to convince me that seafood is delicious, now i have tried it over and over and never found it personally palatable, leave me alone already! so trish relax now and tell your mom how it made you feel, or at least that you have a strong beliefs about food and would consider it a great respect if she let you know what you are eatting. stop scrubbing your tongue now lol
peace

I heard from a friend's sister's exhusband's best man that Flipper has in fact retired, and has a lovely lagoon in Boca. He shares his space with Charlie the tuna, and regardless that they have different tastes, they do enjoy their mutual hobby of fostering rescued chicken's of the sea. And they lived happily ever after......

I grilled some lovely mahi mahi just last night. I've never had it any other way, and I really like it. And yeah, I knew that it was a dolphin fish and not Flipper.

I'm with Hoops on this. You need to know at least what your food is. Especially when it comes to the animals we eat.

Well I think dining on Dolphin would be akin to cannibalism since they are more intelligent than some humans. And dolphin meat or not, I think that was a mean trick to play on you Trish. Guess it's too late to go vomit on her floor (I would have). :p

Oh, that's an awful trick, Trish! Sorry you had to go through the anguish of having dined on Flipper.

Eva; though I agree, behave! :D

I actually have a load of fresh vegetables in my fridge as we speak. Salad however actually does scream when I stab my fork into it. I’m not kidding you. Listen closely next time you chomp down on a poor vegetable. It's an outrage!

If you don't believe me, check out this news release from PETV (People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables).

Oxnard,CA - Research scientists at Oxnard UNC Medical Center have proven that plants, including vegetables, feel pain when subjected to trauma such as being yanked out of the ground, peeled, cooked, and eaten. "Veggies and plants initiate a massive hormone and chemical barrage internally when they suffer any kind of injury," says professor Harry Simeon. "This response is akin to the nerve response and endorphin release when an animal is injured. We cannot ignore the similarities." When Baker asked professor Simeon and his research team what they thought this finding might mean, they responded unanimously, "Nobel prize, baby!"

Other agencies and the sum total of the world's hard-core vegetarians (known as vegans) registered formal complaints against the research. Their team of lawyers has already submitted a motion to have the results of the research destroyed or sealed. Others fear the damage has already been done. A spokesman said, "This is bad for us. Most of our members haven't eaten anything since hearing about the results. Our lawyers are looking into suing Mother Earth for false advertising, but concede that the suit will probably be inconclusive. In the meantime we'll be surviving on vitamin supplements and water."

In an ironic related story, a dozen protesters picketing the Hungry Carnivore Steak House in Dallas were allegedly assaulted by three patrons of the restaurant. Eyewitnesses say that the picketers were making their typical nuisance display of scorn and righteous indignation over the willful consumption of "the flesh of murdered animals" outside the Hungry Carnivore when two unidentified men and a woman stepped out of the establishment and sprayed the picketers with several gallons of what appeared to be blood. Victims and bystanders alike were surprised to discover that the liquid was actually V-8 juice. The truly shocking result of the alleged attack was the reaction of the picketers. All of the protesters were wracked with convulsions and suffered hours of dry heaves while many of the bystanders merely laughed. This reaction within vegetarianism's great bastion of faith has many true believers reconsidering their dietary requirements. Others are quietly making funeral arrangements and the Environmental Protection Agency is considering declaring vegans an endangered species.

Trish, is your mom demented? Seriously. It is incomprehensible to me that a mother would set up her kid for that kind of "trick." I can't feel how that could happen. I am hoping she is not in her right mind.
