You just have to read what this dude has to say about our Janis-who he hasn't even met:
She whined about “the valentines that never came.” Hey, did you ever try sending one to somebody? Don’t tell me there weren’t any geek boys in the chess club you could have dated? How about making the best of your life like the rest of us have to do? How about getting over yourself? Having once been a boy, I can say that your existential angst and perpetual whining is a real turn-off.
For the entire article and a place where you can even comment go to Fungle Jungle (http://funglejungle.blogspot.com/2008/08/yes-this-is-just-rant.html)
The thing is that everybody can put on the internet whatever they like. Even idiots like this guy. He doesn't have to like Janis or her music, that's fine. But his description about Janis as a person and her motivations is so off that it's almost unbelievable. He obviously hasn't ever read anything she ever wrote, has never seen an interview or read a letter about her on this website. He admits to being shallow though and I that's a good thing in this case. He at least has some selfknowledge. What I find most interesting is that he still gets irritated about the lyrics of a song that was written so many years ago. Who is it that is whining now?

Obviously that guy isn't as acquainted with Janis Ian's music or the lady herself as he thinks he is.
Not humurous? What about "My Autobiography"? "Cosmopolitan Girl"? "Married In Canada"? "Boots Like Emmylou's"?, which he even mentions.
Not passionate? What about "She Must Be Beautiful"? "In The Winter"? "I Need To Live Alone Again"? "Ruby"?
Not relevant? What about "Restless Eyes"? "Getting Over You"? "Searching For America"? "Watercolors"?
Music is a universal language and very few songs have spanned the gap as much as "Society's Child" and "At Seventeen". I was a teen who also battled with depression. Janis' songs helped me through those times. And as for Janis herself, a class act who treats her fans as friends...
That guy needs to re-examine himself.
I dare him to meet her, just once, and tell her what he thinks, face to face.
I bet he'd come out a changed man!

I agree with you, Eva .. me thinks the gentleman doth protest too much.

Geeesh...
What can I say other then it takes a lot of crap to grow a mushroom... This person probably gets entangled in his own diarhea... I know it takes all kinds but still a good flush and he'd be gone.... Flush twice... it's a long way to his website...
Best
R.
Astounding. My guess is that “Mushroom” lost his/her earlier battle with "depression and self-loathing" and still some has work to do. The crap a person can find on the Internet is without end. What an uninteresting, uniformed, and boring whiner.

It's similar to Leonard Cohen. Many people think that his music is something you slit yours wrists to, and some people think that of Janis as well. But look beyond that, open your eyes, and you see a lot more and - yes - humour.
I suspect that this person has a political problem. The use of 'liberal' and 'leftist' is highly suspect. Many Americans need to get away from thinking that liberals are dangerous. Liberalism is about freedom, plain and simple.

Janis will tell him a few home truths about himself, I have no doubt

actually I don't think we should get too annoyed about this folks.
I love Janis, but often refrain from posting here about my other favourite artists because I don't think they'd be appreciated by Janis fans. Indeed I have experience of doing so.
We can't affect other people's view of our favourite artists.

David, I think you have it exactly right--this person is just one of today's pseudo-conservatives, who believe they are doing something profound by attacking everything Rush Limbaugh has not told them to approve of.
If you read "between the lines" of so many screeds like this, you'll find loads of self-hatred not far below the surface. They're so busy doing unto themselves, there's little point in anyone else wasting their time with them.

now really, who is the one who is whining? I may not agree with what he has to say but i'll support his right to say it, just don't be the pot calling the kettle black, it's unseemly :D. I'm sure Janis has had harder criticism than this and from more intellegent people.

Excellent suggestion Eva,
I said it before, and I will say it again, the blogosphere is the rhetorical rectum of the internet. There is no end of ignorant, ill-informed bloviators out there to annoy the crap out of you, IF you let them. Don't feed the beast. Do what Eva says, feed yourself, or at least write about feeding yourself, so we can all enjoy it, I just had a popsicle. . .

I had the best burger for lunch today. Gigantic patty grilled to perfection with grilled onions and bleu cheese. YUM! :D
p.s. no, I did not make it myself.
This person has about as much humanity as a slug. It must be comforting to be a know-it-all ignoramus.:p
And, btw, when I was in my teens Valentines Day was one of the most hurtful days of the year. Janis' lyrics refer to a particular time period, not to one's entire life span.
I no longer care about the valentines that never came and I bet Janis doesn't either. Some of us move on, the author of that piece never did, pity.
I picture this guy as handsome and a big wheel in High School...and he's been trying to get by on his charm and good looks ever since, having never graduated to the next level of social awareness...he'll always be High School.
Context is everything. And unfortunately it's mostly absent in this form of communication...

So what if one guy doesn't like Janis. Let go of it people.

Sounds good Sally. I just found vanillavla and caramelvla (vla = kind of a Dutch custard) in my fridge and some chocolatecovered raisins. No, they don't go together. But I can eat one and eat the other after that. Mmmmmm... Earlier I have eaten a soup, made from chickenstock, with big 'ravioli's' in it filled with shrimp. And thick Japanese noodles (udon) It was delicious. Maybe not very authentic but very tasty.

That burger sounds great, Sally. I don't care for custard though.
Last Friday I had to bring my car in for regular maintenance, so I spent the morning hanging out in Annapolis and eating stuff:

A Black and White cookie and an iced Chai Latte, mmmmm. There was a whole Seinfeld episode about Black and White cookies - they seem to be a NYC thing and are hard to come by in the DC area - but the local coffeeshop had 'em that day.
Making toast right now, and the cats are hovering. Bad kitties, no toast for you!

Hmm, I'll stick with the custard... :)

Three of my favorite foods, Hoops!...Love cukes in milk, sugar and vinegar, w/ saltnpeppa, marinate overnight, and eat however you like...bet they'd make a goooood sammich! Then I'll have some of Eva's vla...is that like Flan?...with a peach! Oops. too full for watermelon...oh well, I'll save that for tomorrow.;)
Then I'll have some of Eva's vla...is that like Flan
Ehm... kind of. Only cooled and without the burnt sugar crust. It's dairy and it comes in several flavours: vanilla, caramel, chocolat, raspberry, etc. It's a relatively affordable dessert and it tastes good when it's fresh.
Eva
Sounds wonderful, Eva...nothing beats a homemade custard, tho! Fresh, definitely.
