Yes of late Janis seems to be in a stunning resurgence of popularity.... The credit needs to go out to Janis of course and her staff.... and Publicists, reviewers and agents...and all the local publications and media outlets that after years of little and limited press are getting fired up an excited....Based on personal observation Janis seems far more to be a more often remembered name then with previous tours... The current tour seems to be filling more seats, playing more and larger venues, filling bookstores and festivals... When speaking to people and the name Janis Ian comes up instead of the response of years past where they (or I at one time) would say "Gee I thought she was dead" the responses now are "Oh yea I saw her on the Fox News channel" or "Yes I heard her perform on NPR" or "She's going to be in concert soon here"... So it seems to me that after oh so many years Janis is becoming "an overnight sensation" again...

So what does that mean to us rudies???? Well, for certain it means longer lines after the concerts to say hello, but hey as a rule I try to always be last anyway... As she grows again in popularity her time, rest and energy become more valuable, but thats alright... The ranks of this websight seem to be growing more rapidly and many of the new arrivals will fit right in... so in that rite we all have new people to meet when at the shows... One thing I find amazing is that over the years Janis has ALWAYS found time to say hello or smile and wink... to treat us in a very special way.... I mean really, how many people can say they have shared a casual afternoon at a picnic with their favorite artist... How many artists actually take the time to know us (the fans) by name? How many artists regularly give hugs just because they want to?

Have you ever noticed how often Janis actually credits the fans with a great degree of her success... Not just those that attend shows but this community as well...

Janis's popularity is growing in leaps and bounds and you know we can help... We can all serve (as Kathleen Brogan or John Kilacky has been doing for years) by promoting Janis even more to friends, new and old... Promote Janis and the Pearl Foundation... I don't need to say anything about buying her book as I suspect you all have multiple copies already.... (But what a nice Christmas gift for those that are difficult to shop for :) ) As this website moves closer to 3,000,000 visitors we the rudies can look at others and say "We knew her when and we know her now..." Janis is not dead, just growing stronger and stronger!

Janis, Thank you for letting us share in this grand ride!!!!

Best to you in continuing and growing success

See you in November...

Awesome Randy and ditto everything you said! I think some of my family and friends sometimes get tired of me talking about Janis but.....it's paid off! They're now spreading the word after hearing her music, going to a show or reading the book. Before you know everyone will know:

Janis Ian is Alive!

In 2006 I was looking for a picture of my favorite singer/songwriter of the seventies. I found her Janis Ian and she is older, wiser and has white hair, she actually answered my email, the first fan one I ever sent. She said "Yea we love the white hair don't we.

I don't have to search for a picture now, because they are everywhere.

Congratulations Janis!!!

Janis is not dead. . . .

Well, THANK GOD for that! Otherwise, I've been having the grandest, most realistic auditory and visual hallucination yet! http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k267/deemark/Emoticons/heartthrob.gif

Just tell everyone you know that Janis Ian is alive and well and living in Nashville...when she isn't busy being everywhere else!

Great thread, Randy. Yep, Janis is DEFINITELY "ON THE UP" :)

In the Advocates for Animals office, Janis's music is all I ever play myself, and the staff know I'm a Janis Ian fan. Whatever the Staff are doing, there's always a song by Janis which covers it :)

I'm proud to be a fan even though I've ever only seen her once. That will NOT be the last time :)

randy, thank you for this post. I know i feel blessed just to be able to experience Janis' performing, telling a story, or just hanging out. With this resurgence of her fame, I am so proud of her and so veery happy for her. I think after all this time and all she has done for us and the world and all shee has been thru, it is about time and i hope she is awarded accordingly. at this point in Janis' life, i hope she gets to rest more and relax and enjoy her life. i know Janis loves what she does and may never stop and i will be at every show i possibly can, just like now and i will be part of this family, this wonderful group that Janis has started, just like i have been. and besides :D Janis said she'd remember all the little people :D

Just a note, Yesterday Janis did an interview on the (Philadelphia) "10" Show (More major network exposure)... A couple days before she was on FOX in Washington, DC region...

Incidently Janis... Great interview....On an Olympic scale I'd rate it as a 9.75!!!!!

Best to all

I feel a touch bitter sweet about all this, but I think Janis deserves all the acculades she is getting. I know I try to listen to at least one or two of her cd's over the course of the week (a couple weeks ago I listened to a ton of them) and try to promote her if I can. As I've shared in other postings, I bought a bunch of the Up Til Now cd's and gave them out as Christmas gifts to a number of people (even going so far as to mail them to a few friends of mine that live in Europe.)

I wonder: If the sales are good on the book and compilation, do you think a major would approach her, and do you think she would work with a major if one approached her?

Based on comments Janis made at the Birchmere about wanting to slow down and spend more time at home after this year of touring to promote the book, I would doubt it. A major would want a huge time committment to promote any record she would make with them...besides she's got thems (the recording industry and the RIAA) all ticked off with her views on Internet downloading I don't see a major making the offer in the first place.

Of course it would be totally up to Janis.

I don;t think Janis would work with a major again. she has control and i think she is happy with what it has brought her. I mean, look what she has done, basically by herself! but this is just my opinion.

I know - wishful thinking on my part probably. But yeah - maybe with this publicity when the next studio album of Janis' comes out, it will get a lot of press coverage, sort of the aftermath of the book. And Dolly Parton proved one can do the DYI and get best sales in ions when her Backwoods Barbie she self-released went top 20 pop album charts, top 10 country album charts, and had a couple of charting country radio singles.

If the RIAA would simply turn the reins over to Janis, she might well be able to straighten them out. Whether she would want the job of course is another matter.

I can't imagine why Janis would want to be offered a recording contract with any "major" label or what advantage there would be to signing with one. For starters, she already has her own record and publishing companies and has complete artistic control over her work. She would never get that with a big music label.

Janis sell her soul to a major? I THINK NOT!
Y'all read the book. She went through a lot to get where she is today.
