...so now I know the details about my hand surgery. So here's the update for those who have emailed me to ask since the picnic and to let the rest of ya'll know that I'll be in need of that patented rudie vibe magic soon.

The surgery is scheduled for September 5th at 12:30 in the afternoon. It shouldn't take very long to do but I'll be off work completely for at least a week and then on very limited duty (only can use my left hand; and I'm right-handed) for 3 to 6 weeks. It will be outpatient surgery so I won't have to stay at the hospital unless I have some kind of problem that day. This is my 26th surgery and I don't anticipate any problems since we'll be using a local and not general anesthesia this time.

I have fibromyalgia and have a huge problem with swelling every time I have had surgery on my hands which has caused complications both times I've had this right hand operated on in the past. I really don't want that to happen again. We're trying to head it off by starting me on a very strong anti-inflammatory immediately on the day of surgery.

What the doctor is doing in the surgery is fourfold 1) removing a cyst in the palm of my hand between my small finger and my ring finger, 2) removing a bone spur from the same finger position but on the back of my hand (one is causing the other but which one isn't clear), 3) giving me an injection to take care of inflammation at the base of my thumb and 4) another injection for a retanacular nodule on the tendon of my index finger.

Kathleen will update you after the operation since I will, obviously, not be posting on the board for a little while after the 5th. I'll ask her to let me know what's happening here too.

David, that can happen. When Catherine had her accident when she was 7 the foot was SO sore she had to have a general anaesthetic just to get her dressing changed every other day. I did all the worrying then and I know that this will be fine for you too, Di.

All the best, and Rudie Prayers and strong vibes winging their way to you from Scotland even as we speak, Di

Thanks all...I have the best surgeon in town so I'm mostly worried about the swelling afterward and getting the short term disability coverage taken care of once I pass 5 days off work. I've never had to deal with the Short Term Disability insurance company before and it sounds like a pain in the a$$.

My Rudievibes are on their way Di. I hope you will feel well after this and will never need a 27th surgery. I think 26 is enough for about five lifetimes.

Well, they like to hassle you but if you have all of the forms filled out and your doctor fills them out as well, they really can't deny you. In my case, after the forms were filled in and faxed, the insurance company called and did a little phone interview. I thought they were going to deny me but they didn't. Hopefully, they will continue my benefits....my doctor extended them for another month.....sigh.

Good luck!

Marcia :)

Hey kiddo, we'll be thinking of you and sending the Rudie vibes.
I know you're in good hands (no pun intended) with Kathleen to take care of you.
