Hey all
So I first met Janis in Nashville last year. Brian Austin Whitney founder of www.jpfolks.org organized a JPF showcase at the Bluebird. Janis was an award winner from the 2006 JPF awards...We sat about 10 feet from her and loved the 4 or 5 songs she did...so THEN...I saw that she was coming to Chicago to a beautiful theatre in the Old Town School of Folk Music...I landed 4 tickets in the second row. My wife and my friends that we took were blown away. We laughed, we cried...Janis autographed a pictured for me that I took with her in Nashville. She captivated the crowd...you could hear a pin drop for the entire show. Anyways, I thought I'd come here and say hello since I am now a huge Janis fan ! ! ! HELLO ! !

Hey Herbie,
Welcome to the board... Amazing what that giant Lady can do to people isn't it... To many of us here she is far more then an artist or an author... She's a friend, and yes it is astonishing how quiet a room becomes once she starts her show... Over time you will come to enjoy this place on the internet as many of us do... A safe, fun, silly, emotional place where you can just say what comes to mind... You will find that you have much in common with many of us or vice versa and thats not a bad thing at all... Welcome to our small but very international community of friends.... As you've just been inducted the best is yet to come....
Welcome to the board...
Best to you and yours

Welcome Herbie,
I grew up in the western burbs, bought my first six-string guitar at the Old Town Folklore Center (back in the 60s), and moved south about 2 years ago.
I don't miss the weather but sure do get a hankerin' for a Portillo's beef sandwich or Lou Malnati's pizza every now and then. Kick your shoes off, relax your mind.

Hi Herbie and welcome! This is a nice place with good people all around. My partner and I were also at the show last Friday in Chicago. It really was magic. Glad to meet you here.

I apologize for addressing you all at once, BUT...hey this is great ! ! Usually you get a few heys but you are all making me feel very welcome. This is a great start ! ! I'm sure that you all will annoy me eventually ;) ---- but now this is great...I bought her autobiography CD at the show...and I really love it, especially the second CD with the song about her mom singing again, and the one about "some people lives" .... I am sure I could be friends with all you, and hopefully will be ! !

Hi Herbie. The welcome is not over yet. Welcome to the Janis Ian message board. My name is Eva and I am from the Netherlands. I am also known as the Evil Pirate Queen around these parts. Or (at least in my own mind) the only sane person on the message board.
Anyway... Have fun here. We do :)

Out of print now but you can find in the new part of the new and used off Amazon of Janis' Up Till Now compilation. That was actually one of my first Janis purchases and then I bought several copies from the website Christmas sale in 2005 or so to give as Christmas gifts. I'm sure they were thinking I was crazy

What a terrific post!..WOW! you cetainly had some seriously good seats!--both times!
I've seen Janis 3 times-- twice at the Great American Music Hall in SF--and the only thing I remember after all these years is being over wrought when she sang When Angels Cry---
DAMN! I know she also rocked the joint!

Bill! Doncha wish she could play there when she's in town next month?
Are you going to Yoshi's? Of course you are. We're going to the first show, since it's a school night. I'm actually bringing some friends who I hope to make new recruits and they weren't willing to go to the late one. wimps ;)
Hope to see you there!!
Hi there!
I'm a transplanted Chicagoan now living in Oakland CA!
Glad you enjoyed the show. I had a couple of friends go to the Old Town show. They said it was great.
Have an Italian beef sandwich for me will you? :D

well we have both poles covered now...anybody from the equator? FOOD...hmm...ME loves food ! ! Especially COOKIES ! ! Me loves cookies...OK, here is the recipe for the ORIGINAL Mrs Fields cookies. Enjoy ! ! From a friend at www.jpfolks.org (how I found about about Janis)
Special thanks to Herbie G. for reminding me to dig up the recipe....(and as noted, I did need the shovel for other duties, so it was already out )!!
So here we go:
Mrs. Fields Cookies (chocolate chip):
1) Cream Together:
4 sticks butter
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups granulated sugar
4 tsp. vanilla
4 eggs
2) Mix separately:
4 cups flour
5 cups pulverized oatmeal
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
3) Put aside:
24 oz. of chocolate chips
8 oz. grated milk chocolate
4) Mix two bowls together
5) Blend in chocolate chips and grated chocolate
6) Drop 1 to 2” balls on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake at 375° for 6-8 minutes.
If using bigger balls , half-way thru cooking time pat down the center of the cookies so they don't burn. DO NOT OVERCOOK -- PERHAPS EVEN UNDERCOOK IF YOU LIKE THEM GOOOOOOEEEY!
BON APPETIT!
Oh by the way...I like Semi-sweet chocolate chips in these...but you can do whatever ! !

semi sweet chips and milk chocolate shavings make a fantastic combo...the sweetness of the milk chocolate draws out the more full creamy ruch chocolate flavor that the semi sweet, or even dark chocolate holds
