View Full Version : Stars Single
I just read where Janis mentions in the book..don't worry I am not going to give anything away... about the record company pushing the single of of Stars, but it didn't really fgo anywhere.
I am assuming she is referring to The Man You Are In Me. What a great song, and I remember hearing it on my FM radio in in my NY teen years. The song was haunting with great lyrics.
However, if I had been asked to pick the single, I would have picked Sweet Sympathy. if you could turn back time and pick the single what would you have picked?
Also after reading the chapter, I just listened to Stars.
Janis I think, if you can do it in guitar, it is time to start singing Come and Dance.

I remember hearing an FM radio station in New York City spotlighting the album when it first came out. They played "Stars", "The Man You Are In Me" and "Applause" and a commercial for the album played a bit of "Jesse". I think "Stars" didn't go anywhere because of it's length, being over seven minutes, a long song by stanards back then. In fact, the only records with that much length that seemed to break that rule in the early '70's was "Taxi" by Harry Chapin, "Layla" by Derek & The Dominos (Eric Clapton's side project) and "American Pie" by Don McLean, and even that song had a radio edited version. I do recall however that "Stars" became a 45 flipside thinking that people might discover it that way.
Personally, the whole album was a great return for Janis and I always enjoyed "Page Nine" and thought that would have made a good choice for a single.
"Between The Lines" was released quickly following "Stars". They cranked out albums faster in those days, less that a year's time and "When The Party's Over" was the first single. Columbia Records probably thought "At Seventeen" would be a commercial hit and they released it only weeks after the first single. It was and the rest is music history.

I thought that The Man You Are In Me did chart though on the AC charts?
As a side note - I know Janis plays electric guitar on that track in addition to acoustic. What type of electric was she playing if anyone knows?
