The following appeared in yesterday's local newspaper in response to an editorial that appeared in said newspaper. You might not realize it, but the editorial was in support of a mining company planning an expansion in the area.
"My life for the last 3+ years has been at United Taconite. A job I am so grateful for I cannot begin to tell it all all here.............. I had been self employed for 20+ years. As a Realtor, RE. Broker, Property Management Company Owner, and now a proud member of local 6860 with United Taconite. Unfortunately I did not have a pension, health insurance or a 401K!, now I do! I have no clue as to what Mr. G. does. I have not found his posts literate enough to be worth spending time on. I am willing to give a 2 week check to a fund to prove that Mr. G. could not get hired at any of the local mines. When I was hired there was a lengthy test that included the following: Physical including a drug and agility test, math, spatial perception, vocabulary, and a "one on one" interview with 6 separate interviewers! I love my job, love my salary, love the area! I would not live anywhere else anymore. I lived in the cities as a 612'er for over 20 years. I only go there to visit now only because my son is a city boy, born and raised. Mr. G., if you are not from here, have no family history here, please go away. You are boring and uniformed!!! Frankly, you are not welcome. If taconite was not produced here currently, and in the past: ore and timber, none of us would be here. We do not need packsackers telling us ANYTHING, thank you very much!!! "
Just to translate: a "612er" is anyone from the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area (which now has at least five area codes but they haven't figured that out yet) and a "packsacker" is anyone who lives here but was not born here. The last would apply to any of those who first developed this area, and to those who invented, operate, and maintain all of the principal industries here. Presumably they do not count.
I, alas, do, and hear this sort of thing on a regular basis.
