View Full Version : Never-ending rain......

Wow first we were under HIGH fire danger because of the dry spell. Now this rain doesn't want to end! I haven't seen this much rain in a long time! I wish I had taken my pool cover off. It probably would be full by now!
Gloomy day around here and it's my daughter's prom night!
There are many school proms going on tonight and a lot of college graduations and they will all be very wet events!!
Hope the sun is out in other parts of Rudie-land!!!!

It was supposed to rain here, but the sun's been shining all day :) I was hoping for another sunny day tomorrow, but it seems to be those clouds will arrive by the time I have to get going. Pity, no biking for me.
Rain or no rain, your daughter will probably have a blast anyway, Denise :D

It has been that way for the most of several days, with no end in sight until at least mid-week. It puts a damper on the opening events for the Indy 500 (today is Pole Day) and delays qualifications.
I hope the sun will shine on Chicago next week when Janis and several Rudies will be there! Sounds like I'll be getting to Chi-town Tues. night. Mr KarenSews2 will have business on Wed and Thurs. He'd better let ME have the car!
Wherever the sun is shining, I hope you are enjoying it!

So in the 60's, slightly humid, overcaste but no chance of rain.

I'm sitting under the same mass that Denise, Lin and CD Matthew are. We've been rained out since Tuesday night with no end in sight. Other than being soggy, I know that extended spells of gray put me in a very bad mood. It must be fairly common as the folks at work, moi aussi, alternate between withdrawing from the world and snapping at folks.
Rain, rain go AWAY!!!

I'm considering planting water lilies in my back yard.
I have a fleet of towels by the back door to wipe the muck and more off the 16 paws that insist on bringing it into the house.
I ordered a new raincoat from LL Bean.... NOT on sale!
My new boat has yet to leave the garage...
I am very thanful for the new roof I put on last fall.
Rumor has it there will be sun someday, but I am not holding my breath..

What Agnes said.
It was sunny here all week. In the museum where I work it even got pretty hot because there is a lot of cement and iron on the quay and it's kind of shielded. From of Sunday it won't be as pretty anymore, I understood. But if it won't rain too much, it will still be nice.

This is our third day of cold and rain. We'll have a couple more days of rain but at least the temps will be climbing up slightly. Hopefully the sun will be out to greet Janis here in the midwest!
I'm sitting under the same mass that Denise, Lin and CD Matthew are.
And believe it or not, that same mass is also travelling over Ottawa, as you can see on this animated weather map.

A soggy mess indeed!! We had a Mothers Day/birthday party today. Husband had to set up a tarp over the grill, but needed a raincoat to get to the grill!! My seedlings that I planted and put out everyday are suffering from lack of sun. Water in the basement. Water in the attic....forgot to close the window!! And no end in sight. But I am trying to be positive, all this rain is good for the flowers!!!
Amy, good one.....water lilies in the yard!!!

Water in the basement.
We have two sections of basement... the finished part that's almost completely above grade (we're in a tri level house) and the unfinished part that truly is a basement for an addition put on to the house in the early 60s. They're not connected. I'm dreading checking. Fortunately, most of the things we store there are up high and won't get wet even if it does flood.
We're heading in your general direction in a few hours. Hubby's mother lives in Milford. The radar indicates that it's a bit lighter there than here. The slog out the Mass Pike and down 495 is going to be pleasant (NOT!)
Since this is the zoo, and it's ok to post this... the long range forecast indicates that we will be back in full sun on the 23rd. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Well, it's been raining here most evenings, around the time when it's time to go home after a day in the office. And not just rain, but windy, too. Windy enough to break branches that land in the middle of the Monorail track and cause the service to be disrupted for a few hours.

My son is a 911 Dispatcher and worked most of yesterday and today. He just came home and said that it's unreal how many flooded closed roads, waterfilled basements, rivers overflowing, etc. there are in our county. We are in the southernmost county of Maine so we got hit hard as well as New Hampshire and Massachusetts. There are shelters now open for evacuees in troubled areas. One particular area is downstream from a dam that is threatening to let go. There are 100's of sandbags headed that direction right now.
It took me forever to get my daughter home last night from her prom. She got dropped off from her limo ride home with 10 others, and all the parents had to come and pick them up at 1:00 a.m. What is usually a 20-minute ride turned into about an hour. I had to dodge huge puddles, detour because of closed roads and my windshield wipers were on super speed the whole time!!! We got home about 2:20 this morning.
So my Mother's Day has been spent doing just needed laundry and lying on my couch!!
I heard we might see the sun in another week .... :(

We're still dry, thank goodness, but lots of folks within a mile or two of us have flooded basements. Some areas of northeastern Massachusetts already have over 12 inches of rain. Thank goodness this system didn't come in during the winter. We'd be looking at 6 feet of snow.

After I had posted above, I heard about the flooding in Mass. and New England. I'm terribly sorry if my comments came across as unfeeling. My sincere sympathies to all New Englanders caught up in the deluge. A simple case of ignorance on my part I'm afraid. My best wishes go out to you all...

No worries, Moe.
Frankly, without the newscasts, even folks in this area might not be aware how serious it is. Unless you're from the North Shore, Cape Ann, Coastal New Hampshire or Southern Maine (like Denise) it would be hard to see that the flooding is more than an isolated nuisance.
Everyone, please keep your fingers crossed tomorrow morning when the rivers are projected to crest.
Denise
05-15-2006, 10:20 AM
I agree AceOn6 .....and no problem Moe75!!
It's amazing to think that there has been over a foot of rain in lots of areas here. This was unexpected for sure. There is a dam around the corner from my house but I am upstream from it. It's one of the many dams, throughout all affected regions of New England, that they are keeping a close eye on. If it breaches, a lot of people will lose their homes or suffer serious damages. Luckily, for me, it wouldn't cause us any problems with our home. But we are all keeping our fingers crossed.
Obviously, this is MINOR compared to the hurricane damages down south, but it is still amazing to see what the force of water can do!
There are a lot of school districts that cancelled school. And some of those schools are being opened as shelters for evacuees. Ours was not one of those districts that had to cancel school. We lucked out.
There were a few roads that our school buses could not travel this morning but so far we are in decent shape. My little kids on the bus this morning, however, were "oohing and aaahing" as we passed many deep puddles and high water on the sides of the roads. A miniature golf course close by is totally under water.
Hope you stay dry AceOn6, Lin, AmyinVermont, CD Matthew.......... !

The current forecast calls for one more band of rain tonight. After that, it should go back to occasional light showers. Several people at work have severe flooding in their basements. We're waiting to hear what people lost and hope to be able to get a drive together to help out. One fellow lost his washer/dryer, water heater, most of his holiday decorations, and some of his ski gear.
I recall a hurricane when I was about 5 years old. We had 3 feet of water in the basement and it became an indoor swimming pool for my brother and me. Of course, this was in a time when the water coming into the house was from a rising water table, not from overflow of the sewers. As I recall, I was very disappointed when my father borrowed a pump from the plumber across the street. No more swimming pool :(

With all the rain we've been having and may well still get, it reminds me of
Bills Cosby's routine some years ago . . .
God: (standing on a chair behind Noah, he rings a bell once) NOAH.
Noah: (Looks up) Is someone calling me? (Shrugs and goes back to his work)
God: (Ding) NOAH!!
Noah: Who is that?
God: It's the Lord, Noah.
Noah: Right ... Where are ya? What do ya want? I've been good.
God: I want you to build an ark.
Noah: Right ... What's an ark?
God: Get some wood and build it 300 cubits by 80 cubits by 40 cubits.
Noah: Right ... What's a cubit?
God: Well never mind. Don't worry about that right now. After you build the
ark, I want you to go out into the world and collect all the animals of the
world, two by two, male and female, and put them into the ark.
Noah: Right ... Who is this really? What's going on? How come you want me to
do all these weird things?
God: I'm going to destroy the world.
Noah: Right ... Am I on Candid Camera? How are you gonna do it?
God: I'm going to make it rain for a thousand days and drown them right out.
Noah: Right ... Listen, do this and you'll save water. Let it rain for forty
days and forty nights and wait for the sewers to back up.
God: Right...
Narrator: So Noah began to build the ark. Of course his neighbors were not
too happy about it. Can you imagine leaving for the office at 7 AM and
seeing an ark?
Neighbor: (enters whistling, with brief case) Hey! You over there.
Noah: What do you want?
Neighbor: What is this thing?
Noah: It's an ark.
Neighbor: Uh huh, well you want to get it out of my driveway? I've gotta get
to work. Hey listen, what's this thing for anyway?
Noah: I can't tell you, ha ha ha.
Neighbor: Can't you even give me a little hint?
Noah: You want a hint?
Neighbor: Yes, please.
Noah: Well, how long can you tread water? Ha ha ha
Neighbor: There's one in every neighborhood. (Shakes head and leaves)
Narrator: Well Noah finally got the ark built. Then he had the task of
gathering all the animals two by two.
Noah: Hey, anybody know how to tell the difference between a male and a
female mosquito? (Looking in a box) I told your rabbits before, only two!
(He puts box in boat) Whew, finally the last two animals are on board. Let's
get this thing closed up before God asks me to do something else. I'm six
hundred years old. I am getting too old for this sort of thing.
God: Noah!
Noah: I knew it. What do you want now?
God: You're going to have to take one of those hippos off and get another
one.
Noah: Why?
God: 'Cause you got two males. You need a female.
Noah: I'm too tired to bring anything else on board. You change one of them.
God: Come on, you know I don't work like that.
Noah: But I'm sick and tired of this. I've been working all day everyday
like crazy for months now, dawn to dusk. I'm tired of this.
God: Noah
Noah: Yeah?
God: how long can you tread water? Ha ha ha
Noah: Yeah, well I got news for you. You keep talking about this flood and I
haven't seen a drop of rain. Meanwhile, the whole neighborhood is making fun
of me. I told one of my friends I'd been talking to the Lord and he laughed
so hard he wet his pants. Do you know I'm the only guy in town with an ark
in his yard? People are picketing and calling the heath department,
strangers walk up to me and say "How's it going, Tarzan?" I am sick and
tired of all of this, you let me get a pregnant elephant . . . Do you give
me an instruction book? . . . No!!! Here I am standing under the elephant
and brrrrrrrrump! Right on top of me! I'm telling you, I've had enough.
You're supposed to see all and know all, well have you seen the bottom of
that ark? Who's going to clean up that mess? Not me, I tell you. I quit. I'm
tired of this. I'm going to let the animals out and burn that ark down. I
can't believe you made me do all this . . .
(God takes a watering can and begins to pour water on Noah's head)
Noah: (continues) I can't believe the mess you got me in and . . . and . . .
it's raining . . . This isn't just a shower is it? OK. All right, it's me
and you Lord, me and you all the way. I'm with you Lord. Whatever you
say....

Redjack - I haven't heard that Bill Cosby bit in years and it is so freakin' funny! Thanks for that!
Dee- I hope things are improving around there and SOMEONE has shown up to fix things. And how are you feeling???
THE SUN CAME OUT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:05 am Thursday
I am sleeping, till I hear dripdripdripdripdripdripdripdrip rapidly landing inside the bucket beside my bed. I pray I am hallucinating but I'm not. Once I put the light on, I could see water dripping from a couple of nearby spots as well. Then of course there was water all over the floor, cold water, which I stepped in soaking my nice warm socks and infuriating me even more.
Decided not to bother calling the landlord's emergency number, since I needed more sleep. It can wait till daylight when the office opens at 8:30. For now the water is landing inside a 4-gallon plastic container from a single hole I punched in the white stucco ceiling to channel it to one exit spot.
Don't understand these people. I called them at 11:02 yesterday morning (I checked my cell phone log records to see). What constitutes and emergency situation for them, I wonder? Andrew never did come back or let me know what is being done, even tho I specifically asked him to let me know. That isn't like him to be so unprofessional. :(
Before all this little melodrama began, I was just starting to get over this head cold I've had for the past week and a half. I should be resting. I could not yesterday because of this, and likely won't get much today either, especially if workers are going to show up, potentially dragging new and exciting germs into my apartment on top of everything else. *grumble grumble*
Well about 8:15 this morning the water has begun to drip again - at the rate now of about 2 drops per second. So I just called the office, and was told this job is beyond the capability of the superintendent so they will have to call someone to fix it?!?
LOL Gee, I only called them 22 hours ago about this.
This is beyond reason. Waaay beyond.
So now the receptionist said she will have the property manager call me and let me know when the repair people will get here. Ha!

Dee,
The flipside of that coin is when you own your own home, the roof was inspected and guaranteed for at least 3 years (supposedly new) and in less than 2 years leaks after a rainy spell like this and ruins the ceiling in one bedroom. Of course, this was after a big storm blew a crapload of shingles off the roof that never should have come off....sigh. Yes, I am talking about Tazz and I. We still have not redone the ceiling in the extra bedroom. But this rain has been miserable. I find it very depressing.....probably because I have other issues to boot, but still its so dreary. Hopefully soon, you will be dry once again and we will all see the sun for a spell. :)

My roof started leaking about 18 months after I moved in to my house. The ceilings in the dining room and bedroom were ruined. I replace the entire roof last fall to the tune of $5k. I just noticed what appears to be a new leak near one of the livingroom skylights... gotta call the guy..
I am waiting on repairing the ceilings. I am hoping to do some major remodeling in the next 5 years or so, and also I am afraid of what I will find above the damaged ceiling tiles!

Well there are far worse things in the world than a leaky roof. In a way your stories are helping me put that into perspective, so thanks for posting them. In about 3 hours they will be here to fix this one (hopefully). *sigh*
Chinese water torture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_water_torture) is the popular name for a method of water torture in which water is slowly dripped onto a person's forehead, driving the victim insane. This form of torture was first described under a different name by Hippolytus de Marsiliis in Italy in the 16th century. Supposedly the torture in dripping water is the slow rate at which the water flows. The victim can almost predict when the next drop will fall and a sense of tension builds up. When the drop finally does fall, a sense of shock and relief follows, only to be replaced with more tension about the next drop. The release of tension (no matter how small it is) prevents the victim from withdrawing inside himself. As this does not require interaction on the part of the torturer it can be done continuously.

Here's hoping, Dee, that your "Chinese Water Torture" is coming to an end!!!!!
Another day of rain on our doorsteps again .. :(
I should've taken my (above-ground) pool cover off a week ago! It would be full by now! Instead I've been draining the water off the pool cover!
I need 3-4 people to help get it off so there it sits. My husband & son have been working daily and none of us have been in the mood to try to do it in the pouring rain!
So after all of this rain, I will probably end up filling it up the usual way - with the garden hose - when it finally brightens up around here!
Dee - let us know if they FINALLY fix your leak!!!!
Thanks Denise,
I just hope this company they are sending isn't the same one who, according to my superintendent Andrew, came to fix this problem 5! times already. Apparently their definition of fix, and my definition of fix, are not exactly the same. LOL
Yah here too - more rain. I will say tho that the trees look nice and full and green from my window.
Dee - let us know if they FINALLY fix your leak!!!!
Well they knocked at my door on time at 8, one came in and did a visual inspection, measured in from the outer wall to pinpoint the area to find on the roof, which is where they are now. Lots of heavy scraping sounds, so at least they are actually trying to find the source.

Or they could be doing an Al Bundy, walking around on the roof in golf shoes... You did say you enjoyed taking showers right?? :D
Who? Is that any relation of that serial killer Ted Bundy?
Well now I am Jimmy's. My new (another one eea ghads) property manager came to my door while the workers were on the roof to check out the situation and tell me that they will be repairing whatever outside today, and returning Tuesday (Monday is the Victoria Day holiday here) to repair the damage in my place.
Glad to be out of the joint for a bit. Haven't seen Jim in about a week, first due to the head cold I picked up, then this leaky leak nonsense.
For now the skies are only overcast so we'll go for a walk and lunch. Rain not expected till this aft, then for the next four days. But odds are good that at least it'll be outdoor rain and not indoor rain.

No relation to Ted Bundy, Al was a character played by Ed O'Neil on a sitcom called Married With Children.. http://imdb.com/title/tt0092400/
In an episode much like your scenario, the roof begins leaking and instead of hiring a professional Al proceeds to try to fix it himself. He figures one of the problems is lack of secure footing, Golf Shoes being the answer. Funny Funny show if you can rent it on Dvd.

It has been pouring, torrential downpouring rain since about 9 last night. I have confirmed that I do have a leak around one of my skylights. Called the roofer, and he is coming in the morning (providing it isn't raining!).
I am growing gills. My dogs don't want to go out and pee. The oldest one is sure its going to thunder again ( it did last night) soon, and is holed up under the bed. The rest are sitting cross legged with pained looks on their faces!
The sump pumps in the basement are now working full time, but we are staying out of trouble down there.

Now they are waiting for a good rain storm to check where exactly the water is getting in through the roof. So of course, no rain for days and days. In fact we're hitting highs of close to 30°C these days, with lots of sun too.
Meantime, I'll go on living like a hippie with my bed in my dining area.
(Actually, I'm getting quite used to it being there, so no big whoop really.)

Yes, they finally came and patched the ceiling on Wednesday, Denise. Seems they solved the problem on the roof.
I can only hope and pray, especially since rain is in the forecast again today.

OK, folks. Hang on. One more blast of 3-4" overnight and the Northeast US will break the all time record for wettest 30 day streak. IIRC, we were at 15" before yesterday's batch came through. Wish it was warmer so I could at least imagine that I was in some tropical rain forest.
Soggily yours,
