View Full Version : onward to geekdom
Well I just joined the ranks of Palm owners. One of our sales people decided she wanted to upgrade to a new gadget (a Treo) and so she gave me her Palm. I've been thinking about getting one mostly as an address and appointment book. I didn't want to buy one and have just another gadget that didn't get much use, but I sure can't say no to free. (that's pretty much my motto ;) ) I know they do a whole bunch more, and I wondered what those of you who have them use them for the most. She hasn't given me the software cd that came with it yet, so for now I'm just going to be poking around on the thing itself.

I've got an iPaq with a full mini keyboard, 802.11 and Blutooth. I use it for the usual PDA stuff, plus email and web browsing. It's got a couple of good games and can double as an mp3 player when I don't want to carry my iPod.
Dar - which model do you have?
I bought a TX for my recent UK LRC trip because it has built-in wireless, and I was able to go online with it (and a foldable keyboard for easier typing).
Besides the usual stuff (appointments, address book), I use mine to read ebooks a lot.

Nothing fancy ... mine is a Dell Axim.
It was my son's and he upgraded to another model & type, so he gave this to me. I'd be lost without it now. I strictly use it as an address book and calendar but sometimes I check my e-mail as well.
Cool Dar! Can't help you here though. I just bought a pretty notebook and made an agenda of 2006 of it. I make calls with my cellphone... Geez... I think I'm stuck in the stoneage! :D

Ha Ha! Imagine - making calls with your cell phone!
That's funny - I'd be lost without my Razr phone - love love it!

Ah, is that what you do with a cellphone? Who do you call? Your cellmates?
It's quite the little gadget. I don't have and don't want internet capability. I do not need or want to be that connected.
The software that comes with it is very user friendly. I've got all my family and friends in it, even made a category for Rudies. ;)
It came with free (love free) EReader software, Adobe Acrobat viewer, Solitaire and other stuff I haven't loaded yet since I don't want to over fill the thing before I get an expanded memory card. The sync up process is very quick and easy. If I can do it anybody can.
I have purchased some stories from fictionwise.com, prompted by the ones that Janis wrote that are featured there. I had previously downloaded them in Adobe, but most of the stuff I downloaded (accept for Janis') I hadn't made the time to sit at my desk and read. Now I've downloaded them to my Palm, it's more likely I'll get an opportunity to read them.
Thanks for your input everyone.
So the nice thing about having a book in a little handheld machine is that it fits in my pocket much less obtrusively than a paperback if I want to finish a chapter while in the bathroom. ;)
I downloaded a trial of a program from Vindigo.com that gives me restaurant listings, maps, movie times and other possibilities I don't really need. I just found out there's Mex restaurant just a couple blocks from my office.
Helping me read more and eat more, perfect tool for me. :D

Your E2 also comes with a Mobile Player so you can play MP3s on it, too, as well as videos. However, the files need to be stored in the expansion card. The ebooks also need to be stored in the card, too.

You don't need one if everyone else in your house does. :p
BTW, welcome back!

OK.. so you all know I AM a geek.
Yes, in addition to several computers that I use for various things, I do have both a cell phone and a PDA (Dell Axim). You would think, given my reputation, that I would have both of these things permanently on and attached to me at all times.
But guess what? I find the PDA to be more of a pain in the arse than useful, except as a hand held game boy on occaision. The only other useful thing it can do for me is serve as an addressbook on the rare occaision I am traveling and away from computer.
But guess what.. my cell phone can do that too. Speaking of the cell phone, I carry it for emergency use only. Of course, the one emergency I've had in the last many years, I didn't have it on me! So maybe having it is a preventative! I do not keep it ON, and only 3 people have the number, so when I travel they can leave me messages.
I suppose one day I will succumb to this technological encroachment to my peace and quiet, but so far, I have resisted. There just are times when I do NOT want a phone to answer!

Hah! Not sure if it qualifies me for geekdom yet, but I have gotten my new computer into service and am surviving Windows XP (does it ever stop updating itself?) so far. When I took the thing out of the box, there was an ominous rattling inside, so I took the side off and lo and behold, there was a loose screw inside the case. I figured out where the screw belonged and had it back in in less than five minutes.
So, here I sit, with a duel-core Athlon processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, TWO DVD drives (one a Lightscribe burner) and enough assorted "stuff" to run a small country. Which I am presently using through a dial-up connection to visit message boards.
Ah well, some series "stress relief" games will be coming along soon....and not long after that, DSL. Has anyone on here used Earthlink DSL? It just became available here and seems a bargain. I do know their dial-up service has a great reputation.
Well, during my LRC trip last month, I brought along my TX and wireless keyboard and together, they made it possible for me to log in and keep up-to-date with what was going on with my various Net commitments, including this board.
I had envisaged using the set-up at wireless cafes but ended up using it the most at my friend's flat - they have wireless set up there. Other than that, I had regular computer access at the other places I stayed at.
Here's my TX and keyboard:

You can see where I was visiting at the time.

Dave, I have Earthlink DSL, its been rock solid stable for me for many years now, I have no complaints. The pipe is a little narrow as we discovered during the live-chat, but it should be more than sufficient for your needs.
Chet, cool little rig you got there!

Anything's gotta beat dial-up. Besides, DSL will allow me to get rid of my second phone line, so the savings will more than offset the increase in price.
I may even go whole-hog and go wireless....
